Ganguly 'happy', City of Joy celebrates

Reacting to the news of his inclusion in the Indian squad for the Pakistan tour, Sourav Ganguly said he was happy to have made a comeback and hoped that the side would do well against their traditional arch-rivals.”I am very happy to be back in the side just like any other player in a similar situation,” Ganguly told newspersons at his residence in Kolkata soon after being picked in the team.He said he was yet to hear officially about his inclusion and received the “good news” from television. Asked whether he was going to open the innings, Ganguly said, “I haven’t heard anything of the sort. All I can say at this moment is that I am very happy”. Recalling that India had won both the Test and one-day series during their last visit to Pakistan, he said “I hope we will all play well”. Ganguly refused to draw any comparison between now and his earlier return to the Test team in 1996.Jagmohan Dalmiya, the former BCCI president, today welcomed Ganguly’s inclusion into the Indian Test squad for the tour of Pakistan while stating that undue pressure should not be put on Ganguly. “In the first place, Sourav should not have been dropped from the Ahmedabad Test despite playing reasonably well in Delhi. It is good that better sense has prevailed and selectors realised their mistake and have corrected it,” Dalmiya said.”Sourav has a lot of cricket left in him. I am confident he will be given his due chance and hope that undue pressure will not be put on him,” said Dalmiya who is the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). He also said the CAB was delighted that Ganguly was back in the Indian team.Meanwhile his adversary , Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president, also threw his weight behind Ganguly, saying the former captain deserved a place in the squad and that reports questioning his conduct were not true.

“It looks like that he is definitely the proper person who should be included [in the team],” Pawar told reporters minutes after the Test squad for the tour of Pakistan was named.”What was appearing in the papers that he was not cooperating and his relationship with his colleagues was not good, I myself went to his senior colleagues, there is not a single complaint against him. And whatever reports appeared in the media is unfair on any player and especially for the person who has got victories for India,” he said.Pawar had met Ganguly last week in Delhi where the player reportedly discussed his exclusion from the team.Jubilant scenes broke out on the streets of Kolkata with delirious crowds streaming on to the streets to distribute sweets as news of Ganguly’s return to the Indian team spread like wildfire today. Minutes after television channels beamed the news large crowds gathered at various pockets in the city to kickstart impromptu celebrations.Having held up trains and set up road blocks for days in protest against Ganguly’s exclusion from the Test side earlier this month, cricket buffs sprinkled ‘gulal’ on each other and shouted ‘Sourav Ganguly zindabad’. A large number of people gathered outside Ganguly’s home at Behala in the southern outskirts of the city, displaying his posters and beating drums, as Christmas seemed to have descended a day in advance in the City of Joy.The local television channels, which had been beaming deabtes on Ganguly’s chances of returning to the national side for the last few days, started showing scenes of mirth and conducting ‘vox pops’. From Shyambazar in the north to Naktala in the south, from Beleghata in the east to Gardenreach in the west, the joy on the faces of Ganguly’s fans was there for all to see.Meanwhile, Parthiv Patel, who was recalled to the Indian Test squad for the tour of Pakistan as a back-up wicketkeeper to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, said he would make the most of the chance that has come his way.

“I am very happy. My patience and perseverance have finally paid off,” Patel told PTI over the phone from Surat where he would he playing in the Ranji Trophy match against Bengal starting tomorrow.”I have been working very hard since the last season, I have done well in the Challenger Series, Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy games,” said Patel who was dropped from the Indian eleven after a string of poor shows behind the stumps, including on the tour of Australia. “I have got a chance and I will make the most of it,” he added.Patel said he had improved upon both his batting and wicket-keeping skills and would do well if he made it to the final eleven in Pakistan. “The most memorable moment during last year’s Pakistan tour was when I made 69 runs as a stand-in opener in the Rawlpindi Test which India won,” he said.

Katich century helps Blues to comfortable win

A classy century from Simon Katich led NSW to a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Victoria in the ING Cup cricket match at Bradman Oval today.Katich, coming off his successful return to Test cricket last week when he made a half-century and took five wickets, opened the NSW innings and looked untroubled while making 131 from 129 balls. After electing to bat, Victoria slumped to 4-55 but 101 from Brad Hodge, who missed a $50,000 jackpot for hitting one of the sponsors’ signs by mere centimetres, pushed the Bushrangers to a respectable total of 9-244.Katich and Dominic Thornely (33) made a swift 77-run opening stand from 17 overs to send the Blues on their way.NSW captain Steve Waugh, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd of 5,000-plus in his first appearance at the famous little ground, hit 38 from 58 balls but Katich, who made 52 and took 6-65 for Australia against Zimbabwe at the SCG, was the standout. His ton came from 108 balls.Hodge was heading for a cash windfall when a six from left-arm spinner Aaron O’Brien flew straight towards the ING sign at mid-wicket. The crowd celebrated when they heard the sound of the ball hitting steel, but the ball had hit the posts supporting the sign and Hodge was denied the $50,000.Stuart Clark (2-35) and Don Nash (3-34) were the pick of the NSW bowlers.Stand-in wicketkeeper Nathan Pilon was razor sharp behind the stumps, taking five catches and fumbling nothing.

Bengal secure massive win over Rajasthan

The powerful Bengal side have secured a place in the Ranji quarterfinals after thrashing Rajasthan by an innings and 51 runs at the KL Saini Ground, Jaipur on Sunday. Bengal, who had claimed a 197-run lead by the end of the fourth day’s play, then dismissed the hosts for 146 runs on Sunday. The 41 overs play on Saturday had seen Bengal batsman Subhomoy Das, resuming on 99, complete a well-deserved century. He was eventually out for 129. The rest of the willow-wielders did not add too many runs as the visitors were dismissed for 518. They had though secured a massive lead and this had already assured them of a place in the quarterfinals. A six-wicket haul by their new-ball bowler Sabir Ali on the fifth day though saw them have the pleasure of securing an outright win.

Hyderabad complete facile innings victory over Goa

The match between Hyderabad Under-22s and Goa Under-22s saw the hostscomplete a facile innings and 17 run victory at the ECIL Ground atHyderabad. On the first day, Hyderbad won the toss, elected to bat first againstGoa. The Hyderabad side boasted a strong batting line up and movedfrom strength to strength against a Goa bowling attack that could dolittle to make inroads. Anirudh Singh made 88 (197 balls, 13 fours),but it was NA Yadav who stole the show. Slamming 139 off as manyballs, Yadav struck 21 boundaries and cleared the ropes on threeoccasions. At 403 for 7, Hyderabad declared their innings closed. The target of 404 for a first innings lead proved to be too much forGoa. Mohammed Ghouse with 6/58 was the wrecker in chief as Goasuccumbed to a paltry 138 all out in 40 overs. Asked to follow on, Goawere once again floundering. Losing wickets at refular intervals, theyended the second day on 191/6 despite a good 65 from opener S Kamat.Starting the last day on 191/6, Goa were still 104 runs behind afterbeing asked to follow on. Nothing short of a superhuman effort couldsave Goa the blushes. On the day, there were no heroics forthcoming, and the visitors’ last four wickets delayed the inevitable by 16.5overs. Goa were all out for 248 in 46.5 overs, losing the match by aninnings and 17 runs, Goa collected no points from the game whileHyderabad were left with 8 points.

Aston Villa must unleash Morgan Sanson

Aston Villa are back on the road once again this afternoon with a Premier League clash against West Ham United after securing their third consecutive league win in a row in midweek thanks to a 3-0 victory against Leeds United at Elland Road.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Steven Gerrard could select in his starting XI to take on the Irons, who will be aiming to arrest a three-game losing streak in all competitions, one man who didn’t start against Leeds but we feel should be in from the beginning today is Morgan Sanson.

Despite not starting against Leeds, the Frenchman – who is currently picking up £59k-per-week according to Salary Sport – did show what he can offer to this Villa side in his 19 minutes on the pitch after coming on for Danny Ings.

With 15 touches of the ball, Sanson completed all 10 passes he attempted (including one key pass), also winning four of his five duels and making one tackle and interception each, highlighting what he’s capable of producing on and off the ball.

Having not started in the league since Villa’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United in January, that Gerrard has selected him to come on as a second-half substitute for their past three league games suggests that the 41-year-old may be ready to put the midfielder in from the start this time.

Labelled an “ultimate professional” by Gerrard, the 27-year-old has also been described as having a “big-game mentality” by former Villa manager Dean Smith. That is exactly what the Midlands club will need against David Moyes’ side, who are looking to break into the top four this season.

Taking all this into account, and with the Leeds game finishing less than 70 hours ago, there’s every chance that Gerrard will be thinking of potentially making some changes to his team to avoid fatigue or injury to some players. That could work in Sanson’s favour if his manager thinks he has done enough in recent weeks to warrant a place in the starting XI today.

Newcastle transfer update on Joe Willock

Mark Douglas has dropped a promising Newcastle United transfer update regarding Joe Willock.

The Lowdown: Willock impresses

It is safe to say that Willock has taken his loan spell to St James’ Park by storm, having racked up seven goals in 13 Premier League games for the Magpies before their final match away at Fulham this afternoon (Transfermarkt).

It is not just with his goals in which he has contributed, but his overall displays as well, with Alan Shearer hailing his performance as ‘magnificent’ in the 3-2 home win over Southampton back in February when he first arrived on Tyneside.

The Latest: Promising Willock update

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Douglas has reported that Newcastle believe Willock wants to return to St James’ Park for next season.

Key to the Magpies’ pursuit is that they would build a team around the central midfielder, whereas he is not guaranteed to be a regular starter at Arsenal.

Willock does not want to go back to being a bit-part player and sees the Toon as the perfect platform to continue his development as a footballer.

The Verdict: Newcastle must sign Willock

Newcastle must do all that they can to ensure that Willock is signed on a permanent deal once the summer transfer window opens.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-3/” title=”Newcastle updates! (3)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 21-year-old has already shown his worth with his goals, and he certainly gives an added athleticism in the middle of the park which Steve Bruce will need going into the new campaign.

Nonetheless, other clubs will surely come knocking at the Gunners’ door given his form on Tyneside, and Newcastle need to make sure that St James’ Park is his only destination.

Tait offers to undergo ICC testing

Shaun Tait has “nothing to hide” despite having an unusual bowling action © Getty Images

Shaun Tait is concerned the chucking slurs will hang over him, but he is baffled over why New Zealand questioned his action in the first place. He says he has “nothing to hide” and has offered to undergo ICC testing.Controversy arose when the New Zealand camp refused to clear Tait’s action following last week’s Twenty20 in Perth. Nevertheless, Tait bears no grudges.”I’m not out for revenge. I just hope something like this doesn’t hang over me for the rest of my career like it has with [Muttiah] Muralitharan,” Tait told the Queensland-based Sunday Mail. “To be honest, I don’t know how he’s handled it. You’ve got to be mentally strong to keep going about your business when people are questioning your action.”I’m comfortable with my action. I know it’s a bit unique. I tend to turn my wrist very late at the point of delivery, but never at any stage of my career has anyone tried to suggest I chuck. I’m not happy about it at all but I’m not the sort of bloke to lose sleep over it.”If the ICC want to test me, that’s fine, I’ll do it anywhere, anytime. I’ve got nothing to hide.”Tait, meanwhile, has come under more fire from New Zealand as the vice-captain Brendon McCullum warned him about “mouthing off”. In the build-up to the opener in Adelaide on Friday, Tait had questioned the side’s ability to handle his pace, something which Daniel Vettori had himself acknowledged anyway.”If he’s Glenn McGrath, he can probably throw comments like that out there,” McCullum told AAP on Saturday. “But my only advice would be to maybe get a few more statistics behind him before he starts mouthing off.”I just thought it was a bit reckless from Taity. He’s a good bloke but he’s only played 15 games. When McGrath was very good at talking it up, he also had some unbelievable statistics behind him.”

Tait back from hamstring injury

Andrew Johns will get another chance in the New South Wales side © Getty Images

Shaun Tait will return from injury for South Australia’s Twenty20 match against Queensland at Adelaide on Wednesday, nearly a month after he was diagnosed with tendinosis of his left hamstring. Tait will be keen to impress at every opportunity, having been named in Australia’s preliminary 30-man World Cup squad. He will replace Gary Putland, who has strained his left quadriceps, in the Redbacks’ line-up. South Australia, who have only one win from their three games this season, have dropped Callum Ferguson and Paul Rofe, and included Simon Roberts and the batsman James Smith, 18, who has been rewarded for his outstanding form in Adelaide grade cricket.Brendan Nash has been called into the Queensland line-up as cover for their stand-in captain James Hopes, who is in the Australia squad to take on England at Sydney on Tuesday.New South Wales have stuck with their controversial selection of Andrew Johns, the rugby league player, for Wednesday’s match against Tasmania, despite the move contributing to their loss against South Australia on Sunday. The Blues, who are now out of contention for the KFC Twenty20 final, lost to the Redbacks after Simon Katich refused to put Johns on strike in the last over of their run-chase. But Cricket New South Wales maintained the decision to play Johns as a crowd-puller paid off, with 10,652 spectators flocking to the game at Newcastle.Nathan Hauritz will miss the game with a calf injury and has been replaced in the 12-man squad by Jarrad Burke, the top-order batsman who played all three Twenty20 games for the Blues in 2005-06. Tasmania, who have only one win on the board, have included Ben Hilfenhaus in their 13-man outfit, although his availability is uncertain after he was named in Australia’s Twenty20 squad.Western Australia, who travel to the MCG for a top-of-the-table clash with the Bushrangers, have made no changes to their line-up. Victoria’s 13-man squad includes Cameron White and Shane Harwood, both of whom could play in the match against England. The winner of the game at Melbourne should host the final on Saturday, although a big win for Queensland could see them take the honour.South Australia squad Daniel Harris, Darren Lehmann (capt), Mark Cosgrove, Nathan Adcock, Ken Skewes, James Smith, Graham Manou (wk), Ryan Harris, Trent Kelly, Dan Cullen, Simon Roberts, Shaun Tait.Queensland squad James Hopes (capt), Craig Philipson, Brendan Nash, Clinton Perren, Nathan Reardon, Aaron Nye, Michael Buchanan, Chris Simpson, Steve Paulsen, Chris Hartley (wk), Andy Bichel, Ashley Noffke, Nathan Rimmington.New South Wales squad Ed Cowan, Phil Jaques, Brad Haddin (wk), Simon Katich (capt), Daniel Christian, David Warner, Jarrad Burke, Dominic Thornely, Aaron O’Brien, Tim Lang, Scott Coyte, Andrew Johns.Tasmania squad Michael Di Venuto, Dane Anderson, Travis Birt, Daniel Marsh (capt), George Bailey, Michael Dighton, Tim Paine (wk), Adam Polkinghorne, Damien Wright, Xavier Doherty, Brendan Drew, Matthew Wade, Ben Hilfenhaus.Victoria squad Brad Hodge, Aiden Blizzard, Michael Klinger, Cameron White (capt), David Hussey, Robert Quiney, Andrew McDonald, Jon Moss, Adam Crosthwaite (wk), Shane Harwood, Gerard Denton, Mick Lewis, Darren Pattinson.Western Australia squad Luke Ronchi (wk), Shaun Marsh, Adam Voges, Marcus North (capt), Luke Pomersbach, David Bandy, Theo Doropoulos, Sean Ervine, Peter Worthington, Aaron Heal, Tim Macdonald, Ben Edmondson.
