Carlos Tevez Brazil linked played down

Brazilian side Corinthians have denied rumours they are preparing a summer bid for Manchester City star Carlos Tevez.

The former Manchester United and West Ham forward has scored 72 goals in 139 appearances for City since his arrival in 2009, helping them lift the Premier League and the FA Cup.

However, he has also endured some turbulent moments in a blue shirt, most notably when he spent six months in limbo after a bust-up with boss Roberto Mancini during a Champions League game at Bayern Munich.

Tevez has also been vocal in the past over his struggles to settle in England and his desire to move closer to Argentina, sparking rumours of a move to a host of top South American clubs.

Despite those reports City officials revealed in March that they would like to extend Tevez’s contract, which has 18 months to run.

World Club Cup champions Corinthians, where Tevez enjoyed a two-year spell earlier in his career, emerged this week as a possible destination for the 29-year-old, with a summer bid mooted.

When quizzed on the rumours the club’s director of football, Edu Gaspar, says they are not planning on buying Tevez – or any striker for that matter – any time soon.

“At this moment we have no interest in Tevez, we’ll sign players for the positions we need,” he told Terra. “We don’t seek a player because he is or might become important. If we need a player and we see that is someone who we need, we go after him. We will fight to sign him.”

Callum Wilson responds to Jesse Lingard’s snap on Instagram

[ad_pod ]

The archetypal modern footballer, Jesse Lingard’s off-pitch activities probably get him as much reaction as what he does on the pitch.

The Manchester United star has come under fire by some for his apparent lack of focus on football itself, but has generally been one of the Red Devils’ more consistent performers.

With England’s Nations League campaign coming to an end, Lingard is off on his holidays and took to

/Byp2CKTpEI-/” data-lasso->Instagram to share the news.

The snap led to Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson to respond with a short message, with the duo seemingly striking up a friendship whilst on international duty together with the Three Lions.

After struggling in the early parts of the season under Jose Mourinho, Lingard seemed to come to the fore under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and ended the campaign with five goals and four assists across all competitions.

The midfielder however was unable to inspire the side to a Champions League finish, with United finishing in sixth and facing Europa League football next season.

Having impressed Solskjaer enough this season, reports in recent weeks have suggested Lingard will be offered a new and improved contract that will see him earn around £130k-a-week, with his existing deal currently only lasting until 2021.

AVFC: Preece makes Kalvin Phillips claim

Aston Villa remain long-term admirers of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to Ashley Preece.

The Lowdown: Leeds flirting with relegation

Leeds have recently sacked Marcelo Bielsa after three-and-a-half years in charge at Elland Road and have brought in Jesse Marsch as his replacement.

The Whites are currently just two points off the relegation zone, and should they drop down to the Championship, you’d expect that some of their star players, including Phillips, would leave in the summer.

Villa tried to sign the England international back in 2019, but as we know, he remained in Yorkshire. Phillips did reveal last year that he was ‘swaying towards’ a move to the Midlands at the time, though, and it seems as if Villa chiefs are still keen on the 26-year-old.

The Latest: Preece’s comments on Phillips

Preece relayed comments from a Birmingham Live Q&A on Tuesday morning.

One fan hoped to see Phillips make the move to the Midlands in the summer, should Villa’s budget be in the region of £100m after keeping Philippe Coutinho. This is what Preece had to say in reply:

“Kalvin Phillips is an interesting one now off the back of Bielsa’s sacking. As we know, Villa have long been admirers of the England midfielder. I’m expecting a summer of big change, Gerrard’s already hinted at that.”

The Verdict: One to watch…

Phillips, who shared his admiration for Steven Gerrard last summer, has been out of action since December and has had to watch his Leeds team-mates struggle, so you could argue that a possible move to Villa Park may well be one to keep an eye upon.

It seems as if Leeds are in real danger of relegation, but you’d expect that Villa would still need to cough up a big fee for his services.

Liverpool, Manchester United and West Ham have all been linked with the player in recent months, with the latter preparing a £50m bid last month. A fee in that region could still be required even if Leeds drop down a division, so he could end up costing Villa a club-record fee if they do go for him.

Rangers v Celtic in Sydney Super Cup

Renowned Glasgow Rangers blogger ‘Four Lads Had a Dream’ have given their reaction to some news that has now come out of Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Sydney Super Cup

As confirmed by the official website of the Teddy Bears, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team have now accepted an invite to the Sydney Super Cup in Australia in November.

They will play Western Sydney Wanderers before facing their bitter rivals Celtic in the first ever Old Firm game to be played outside of Glasgow.

The Latest: Blogger reacts

Taking to Twitter, ‘Four Lads Had a Dream’ have given their reaction to the news, and it is safe to say that they were left far from happy:

“Will repeat again.

“Allowing ourselves to be part of this Sydney cup (which is being marketed as a homecoming tour with the Glasgow Derby) is absolutely nauseating.

“So out of touch with our support.

“Disgraceful decision which will end the trust of many figures in the boardroom.”

The Verdict: Not thought through

The decision to accept the invitation has clearly not been thought through much by the Light Blues board.

The Cup has been advertised as a homecoming for Hoops manager and Aussie Ange Postecoglou, and so all of the focus and excitement will be on him and his team, rather than the Gers.

Nonetheless, it is also a long way to travel for a friendly tournament that does not really have much bearing on their season, and if anything increases the risk of injuries and fatigue as some players head to the World Cup, before the club anxiously await their return, hoping that they are unscathed.

Aston Villa must unleash Morgan Sanson

Aston Villa are back on the road once again this afternoon with a Premier League clash against West Ham United after securing their third consecutive league win in a row in midweek thanks to a 3-0 victory against Leeds United at Elland Road.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Steven Gerrard could select in his starting XI to take on the Irons, who will be aiming to arrest a three-game losing streak in all competitions, one man who didn’t start against Leeds but we feel should be in from the beginning today is Morgan Sanson.

Despite not starting against Leeds, the Frenchman – who is currently picking up £59k-per-week according to Salary Sport – did show what he can offer to this Villa side in his 19 minutes on the pitch after coming on for Danny Ings.

With 15 touches of the ball, Sanson completed all 10 passes he attempted (including one key pass), also winning four of his five duels and making one tackle and interception each, highlighting what he’s capable of producing on and off the ball.

Having not started in the league since Villa’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United in January, that Gerrard has selected him to come on as a second-half substitute for their past three league games suggests that the 41-year-old may be ready to put the midfielder in from the start this time.

Labelled an “ultimate professional” by Gerrard, the 27-year-old has also been described as having a “big-game mentality” by former Villa manager Dean Smith. That is exactly what the Midlands club will need against David Moyes’ side, who are looking to break into the top four this season.

Taking all this into account, and with the Leeds game finishing less than 70 hours ago, there’s every chance that Gerrard will be thinking of potentially making some changes to his team to avoid fatigue or injury to some players. That could work in Sanson’s favour if his manager thinks he has done enough in recent weeks to warrant a place in the starting XI today.

Celtic dealt fresh Kyogo injury concern

Celtic have been dealt a fresh injury concern regarding centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

What’s the latest?

According to a recent report by the Daily Record, the 27-year-old hitman, who has not played for Celtic since December 26 due to a hamstring injury, has now been left out of Japan’s international squad for their crucial World Cup qualifiers in the coming weeks – something that would appear to suggest the striker is still some way off making a return to the pitch.

Supporters will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Kyogo has been for the Hoops since his £4.6m move to Glasgow last July, should the centre-forward indeed still be a number of weeks away from making a return to Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI, it would undoubtedly be a circumstance that will leave the Parkhead faithful gutted.

Indeed, over his 14 Premiership outings this season, the £4.95m-rated striker has bagged eight goals, provided two assists and created four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game – with these returns seeing the 27-year-old average a very impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.03.

However, it has not only been in Scotland that the £18k-per-week sensation has been in deadly form, with Kyogo also having scored two goals, registered two assists and created two big chances over his five Europa League appearances – with these metrics seeing the Japanese hitman average a SofaScore match rating of 7.10.

As such, with the Old Firm derby being the first fixture back after the upcoming international break – a game that could well be season-defining for the Bhoys – and Kyogo not being deemed fit enough to feature for Japan over the next fortnight, it would appear extremely unlikely that the centre-forward will make it back for the Rangers clash on April 2 – something that is sure to be a huge worry for Celtic supporters.

AND in other news: Ange drops behind the scenes Celtic update that will leave supporters devastated

Celtic handed Old Firm injury lift

Ange Postecoglou has been handed a major boost at Celtic ahead of the Old Firm derby next weekend…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Record, the Hoops look set to receive a big lift ahead of their clash with their rivals next weekend.

The report claims that Alfredo Morelos has returned to Rangers with a thigh injury after failing to pass a fitness test to play in any of Colombia’s matches.

Buzzing

This update will leave Ange feeling buzzing as the Gers being without Morelos would be a massive boost to his side’s chances of winning the match.

The Bhoys are top of the Premiership table heading into the game at Ibrox and it is poised to be a season-defining clash for both teams. A win for Postecoglou’s men will see them go six points clear and in with a fantastic chance to win the title, whereas three points for the hosts will see them draw level with Celtic and tee up a tense end to the campaign.

This is why this match is a huge moment in the season and Rangers being without one of their best players will weaken their chances of winning. Morelos’ thigh injury has cut his international duty short because he was not fit enough to play against Venezuela on Wednesday, suggesting that he is unlikely to be ready – or at least 100% fit – for the game on Sunday.

In the Premiership this season, the striker has racked up a sublime 11 goals and seven assists in 25 starts. He has been phenomenal – averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.32 – and that is why him being out of contention would strengthen Celtic’s chances as they would not need to deal with his huge attacking threat at the top end of the pitch.

Postecoglou will, therefore, be relieved by this news as Morelos – at best for Rangers – is coming into the game carrying a big knock or he will be out completely. Celtic may not have to play against the attacker at the peak of his powers and the statistics suggest that it will be a significant boost.

The Colombian centre-forward was absent from the Gers squad when the two teams last met in the Premiership back in January and the Australian head coach enjoyed a fine night at Parkhead on that occasion. His side won 3-0 as they swept their rivals aside with ease, with Kemar Roofe starting in place of Morelos and being unable to cause any issues to Cameron Carter-Vickers or Carl Starfelt.

Liverpool: Journalist drops big Gakpo claim

Speaking to Voetbal International, as transcribed and shared by PSV Fans, journalist Marco Timmer has shared a big update on Liverpool’s links to PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo.

The Lowdown: Man in demand…

The 22-year-old has been making waves in Europe whilst enjoying a brilliant 2021/2022 season with PSV in the Eredivisie – attracting real interest from English clubs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-newest-updates/” title=”Liverpool newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Liverpool and Arsenal have been named as suitors most recently, while Premier League champions Manchester City are also in the mix according to some sources.

Gakpo, able to play in a variety of roles across the forward line, has racked up an impressive 8 goals and 13 assists in the Dutch top flight alone – leaving little wonder why top clubs are monitoring his situation.

Sharing an update on Jurgen Klopp and FSG’s alleged desire to sign the attacker, Timmer has made a big out-of-window claim.

The Latest: Timmer makes big Gakpo claim…

Speaking to Voetbal (via PSV Fans), the reporter claims Liverpool have ‘already’ held talks over Gakpo.

“It is now a certainty that Cody Gakpo will leave PSV”, Timmer explains.

“The Eindhoven resident has already spoken to clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City, while Bayern Munich is also interested.

“An intermediate step on his way to the absolute European top therefore seems to be his preference. At the moment, Arsenal are in pole position, but nothing is definitive.

“The London club will have to pay a record amount for Gakpo. PSV is aiming for at least forty million euros (£34m).”

The Verdict: Get it done?

While top flight rivals Arsenal currently hold the upper hand, Liverpool’s hijack swoop for Luis Diaz at the expense of Tottenham has taught us that Klopp’s side are still well in contention for Gakpo’s signature.

For around £34m, the Netherlands international ace could be a real steal going by his goals/assists this season and he arguably stands out as one of European football’s most eye-catching starlets.

Called an ‘exciting’ player by former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, the ex-shot stopper turned pundit believes Gakpo would be a ‘real hit’ across the channel and ‘especially’ at Anfield – having watched him closely for PSV (Football Insider).

Robinson’s view on Gakpo could back just how shrewd a potential signing he could be for Klopp, not to mention the fact he has averaged more successful take-ons per 90 (3) than any Liverpool star this season (WhoScored).

Spurs: Bergwijn drops transfer hint

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn will evaluate his options in the summer transfer window.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by Algemeen Dagblad (via Sport Witness), the 24-year-old discussed his limited opportunities under the management of Antonio Conte, before suggesting that, if his situation at Tottenham does not improve over the remainder of the season, he could look to secure a move away from the Premier League side at the end of the current campaign.

Speaking after the Netherlands’ recent 1-1 draw with Germany, Bergwijn said: “I don’t get to play much at the club. I am happy that the national coach has called me up, that’s not [the] obvious [thing to do].

“You don’t forget about football. But of course, you feel that you don’t play that much. It was nice to be here again. We have a good and fun group.

“I wouldn’t know [whether his form for the Netherlands can improve his situation at his club], we’ll see. Everyone wants to play, of course. I have to keep my head up and work hard in training. Then we’ll see what happens in the summer.”

Conte must axe Bergwijn

While Bergwijn is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented player on his day, should Conte not be a fan of the Netherlands international, it would appear wise for the 52-year-old to move the forward on in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, since the Italian’s arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November last year, the £16.2m-rated winger – who John Wenham dubbed both “terrible” and “so out of form it’s untrue” earlier this season – has started just one Premier League fixture – playing a mere 215 minutes of league football over his 13 top-flight outings under Conte’s management.

However, in truth, the £73k-per-week attacker’s struggles at Spurs started long before the appointment of the former Inter Milan head coach, as, following his £27m signing back in January 2020, the 24-year-old has been given the nod from the off in just 25 Premier League fixtures – making a further 28 appearances from the bench.

And, considering his general level of performance over his two and a half years in north London, it is hardly surprising that the Dutchman has not managed to displace the likes of Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura, with Bergwijn averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.82 in 2019/20, 6.56 in 2020/21 and 6.75 so far this season – ranking him as Spurs’ 12th-best, worst and seventh-worst performer in each respective campaign.

As such, with the winger having attracted interest in the January transfer window, still being just 24 years of age and possessing a decent Transfermarkt valuation, this summer would indeed appear the optimum time for Conte to offload the forward – as the price Tottenham can demand for Bergwijn would only decrease further after another season in which he spends the majority of his time on the bench.

Newcastle now eyeing 2026 move to sign Lamine Camara amid Kante comparisons

Newcastle United have now reportedly set their sights on signing a midfield reinforcement who’s been compared to the iconic N’Golo Kante.

Newcastle chasing key midfield addition

It’s a fairly open secret ahead of 2026 that Newcastle are after an extra midfield star. Their usual trusty trio of Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes has shown signs of wilting without much-needed depth and that’s something PIF must look to fix when the January transfer window swings open.

Joelinton has particularly suffered this season and now has an injury issue to contend with. Eddie Howe revealed the news earlier this week, telling reporters: “Joelinton is recovering from a groin injury. He is fit to a certain extent, but we would only use him in an emergency situation.

Same agent as Osula: Newcastle now offered chance to sign "excellent" UCL ace

Eddie Howe is once again short on defensive options.

ByTom Cunningham

“For example, to defend a corner in the closing minutes of the match. He is training, but perhaps not completing every drill at full intensity.”

Without him, Newcastle have been forced to turn towards the likes of Joe Willock, Lewis Miley and struggling summer signing Jacob Ramsey. Compared to the robust nature of Joelinton’s work, none of those three represent like-for-like replacements or upgrades in other departments.

One man who could arrive to solve those problems is Ruben Neves. The Al-Hilal midfielder has just over six months left on his contract in Saudi Arabia, but could leave earlier and in the January transfer window. Newcastle, alongside others, are reportedly interested in the Portugal international.

However, Neves isn’t the only name on the January shortlist. According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle are now eyeing a move to sign Lamine Camara from AS Monaco. The talented midfielder is being monitored by the Magpies ahead of next month.

Camara would be bargain Neves alternative for Newcastle

If they weren’t held back by their wage structure then Neves would be Newcastle’s man. Alas, the reality is that they’re unlikely to secure his signature if he wants to match his £15m-a-year Saudi wage back in the Premier League. So, those in Tyneside may need to find an alternative and that’s where Camara could come in.

Compared to Premier League winner Kante in the past, the Monaco star is still just 21 years old and yet to even reach the peak of his powers. A move next month may be unlikely as Camara is representing Senegal at AFCON, but Newcastle should look to secure a move beyond the winter window.

Dubbed a “complete midfielder” by Como scout Ben Mattinson this time last year, Camara could be the answer to Newcastle’s problems in 2026.
