How officials reacted to Levy exit following Tottenham tension with Joe Lewis

Tottenham Hotspur are no longer led by long-serving former chairman Daniel Levy, who’s now departed Spurs after a mixed but very memorable 25-year tenure.

Levy, who helped to transform the Lilywhites from a mid-table Premier League side under Sir Alan Sugar into a financial powerhouse off the field, couldn’t do that much to turn around their on-pitch form.

Just two major trophies in his two-and-a-half-decade-long spell in charge highlight exactly why supporters staged recent protests over Levy and ENIC, demanding change in their thirst for success.

Tottenham are one of the most valuable football clubs in the world, and in that sense, Levy leaves N17 in a much more fit state than when he first arrived.

However, criticism surrounding a lack of spending compared to elite rivals, not to mention some pretty comical moments as a result of questionable decision-making, perhaps explain why a change is needed in the boardroom.

Spurs’ infamous 2021 search for a new manager after sacking José Mourinho, which spanned a crazy 72 days, resulted in their hire of Nuno Espírito Santo, who was sacked just months later. Antonio Conte replaced the Portuguese, but he’s remembered just as badly for his insane post-match press conference against Southampton in 2023.

More recently, Tottenham’s repeated fumbles in the summer transfer market were pretty embarrassing. Despite agreeing deals for Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, both moves fell through at the eleventh hour, forcing Levy to scramble for new signings in the final days, even if he had months to prepare beforehand.

While Levy wasn’t solely responsible for these mishaps, the 63-year-old had a “vice-like” grip on Tottenham’s day-to-day running, but that was eventually weakened by the involvement of Joe Lewis’ kids, who are growing in influence behind-the-scenes (Paul O’Keefe).

Eventually, Levy was informed by ENIC that he’d be stepping down from his role as chairman, and according to The Times, he wasn’t aware of this until just hours before the north Londoners made it official.

Now, a report by The Independent and journalist Miguel Delaney has shared how those within football have viewed this huge announcement.

How senior officials reacted to Daniel Levy exit from Tottenham

Delaney writes that many senior executives in football, presumably Levy’s Premier League counterparts, were “stunned” by the news of his resignation on Thursday evening.

Furthermore, it is reported that multiple sources heard of growing tension between Levy and ENIC owner Joe Lewis, that had been “bubbling away” for years beneath the surface.

The Lewis Family, in an official statement, are adamant that a “new era” has begun at Tottenham, but whether that is the promise of more silverware remains to be seen.

Alex Hales to skip Blast, Hundred after signing Knight Riders deal

Alex Hales is set to skip both the T20 Blast and the Hundred after signing a deal which will see him represent Knight Riders franchises in both Major League Cricket and the Caribbean Premier League.Hales, 36, retired from international cricket in 2023 but has continued to play franchise cricket around the world, and became the second-highest run-scorer in T20 history earlier this month. He has played for Nottinghamshire since 2008 but has recently relocated to Dubai and will not return to the club this summer after opting not to sign a new contract. The decision will put Hales’ long-term association with Trent Bridge on hold, though he has not ruled out a future return. He has called the venue home throughout his professional career and is the leading run-scorer for both Notts (in the Blast) and Trent Rockets (in the Hundred), winning titles with both teams.Last year, Hales missed six of Nottinghamshire’s 14 group games in the Blast to fulfil a contract at the Lanka Premier League but the ECB has since tightened regulations on No-Objection Certificates (NOCs). As a result, signing a contract with either Notts or Trent Rockets would likely have rendered Hales unable to play overseas throughout the English season.Related

ESPNcricinfo has learned that he will instead take up an offer from the Knight Riders franchise, which will see him play for their Los Angeles and Trinbago teams in MLC and the CPL respectively. Depending on final dates, he may also return to the LPL in between the two tournaments, or alternatively feature in the new European T20 Premier League in Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.Knight Riders own four teams around the world – Los Angeles, Trinbago, Kolkata and Abu Dhabi – and several players have represented them in two or more territories, including Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. Venky Mysore, their chief executive, has previously suggested that players signing year-round contracts with an IPL franchise would be “nirvana” and Hales’ move appears to be another step towards that.”The last 17 years playing at Trent Bridge for Notts have been an absolute pleasure, and it remains my favourite place in the world to play cricket,” Hales said in a statement. “Some of my best memories have come in a Notts shirt, and some of my closest friendships in the game have been made in that home dressing room.”Having spent more and more time playing around the world in recent years, heading back to Trent Bridge has always been something I’ve looked forward to. But given the current landscape of the global game as well as having recently moved abroad, unfortunately I won’t be able to return this season… Hopefully I will be able to return at some point in the future.”Mick Newell, Notts’ director of cricket, said that Hales would be welcome to return to the club if his schedule allows in future. “While he won’t be joining us this summer, we are by no means closing the door on him making a return to Notts at some stage in the future, and his achievements mean he will forever have a place in Trent Bridge history,” Newell said.”Both his life and the global cricketing landscape have changed immeasurably since he made his debut 17 years ago. We appreciate the challenge he has faced in balancing his personal life, having recently married his South African fiancée and moved abroad, with the opportunities that a player of his calibre earns across the globe.”Hales will become the second Englishman to feature in MLC after Jason Roy, who terminated his ECB incremental deal early in order to play in the first season. Roy featured for Knight Riders again last year but has not been retained for 2025, and is likely to play for Surrey throughout the Blast season. He will still require a “No Objection Letter” from the ECB to play overseas but is not anticipating any issues, despite recent changes in the board’s policy. Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, told talkSPORT in December: “If [players] choose not to have a contract with a county and they want to be a complete global freelancer, that’s fine.”The changes – which Gould said are designed to “defend our game” from the threat of franchise cricket – played a role in James Vince’s decision to quit first-class cricket this season in favour of the Pakistan Super League. Tom Kohler-Cadmore will also play in the PSL, and has therefore been renegotiating his Somerset contract accordingly.

"Here we go" – Fabrizio Romano confirms BlueCo signing in boost for Chelsea

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed some intriguing transfer news out of Chelsea, with BlueCo agreeing a unique summer deal.

Enzo Maresca is poised for a hectic end to this summer window, and the BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella reports that they could orchestrate as many as 13 incomings and outgoings in the space of just 12 days.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli, Mathis Amougou, Djordje Petrovic, João Félix, Ishe Samuels-Smith, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Armando Broja, Lesley Ugochukwu and, most recently, Renato Veiga, have all left Stamford Bridge on permanent deals, with many more expected to follow.

Chelsea, despite spending nearly £280 million in the transfer market, have registered a net spend of just £25 million as a result of their fire sale, with Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, Alfie Gilchrist and even Tyrique George all potentially on the chopping block too.

Exits will be crucial in determining just how many incomings Chelsea can manage before deadline day on September 1, amid the club’s ongoing talks to sign both Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig sensation Xavi Simons.

UEFA are pressuring Chelsea to register a positive transfer balance by next month, or risk an inability to register new signings in their A-list Champions League squad, coming after they reached a settlement over broken FFP rules with the governing body last month.

However, for their most recent incoming, Chelsea won’t have to worry about that.

Crystal Palace's AdamWhartonin action with Ipswich Town's Julio Enciso

BlueCo have used Chelsea’s sister club strategically this window, selling Ishe Samuels-Smith to the Ligue 1 side for a small profit, and they’re now utilising Liam Rosenior’s team as a vehicle to sign Brighton starlet Julio Enciso.

BlueCo agree deal for Julio Enciso in boost for Chelsea

According to Romano, writing via X, Chelsea are set to complete the signing of Enciso from Brighton next year.

First, the Paraguayan forward will spend the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Strasbourg before moving permanently to London next summer, with BlueCo striking a bargain £17 million deal.

Strasbourg can offer him regular first-team football at a competitive level in the meantime, and Enciso has already shown glimpses of his serious potential in the Premier League.

The versatile 27-cap international even bagged a goal and an assist against Chelsea during their 2-2 draw with Ipswich in April, adding to his tally of seven goal contributions in 29 total appearances last campaign across his appearances for both Brighton and the Tractor Boys on loan.

Enciso has been tipped to become a “Paraguayan football legend in the making” (Jacek Kulig), and securing the 21-year-old’s signature for significantly below £20m can be seen as a major coup for Chelsea, even if they face a year-long wait to welcome him into Maresca’s squad.

SA look to break spin stranglehold while India worry about depth

Neither team will read too much into how individuals have fared, but there are broad, team-level issues they may want to look into

Karthik Krishnaswamy12-Nov-2024Big picture – both teams have issues to addressThis series is a bit of an oddity, with two sides at below full strength, with a number of big names rested for more pressing engagements, facing off in a format that’s taken a bit of a back seat in terms of wider relevance, with no immediate world event to build towards. It’s also an oddity in that it’s four matches long, rather than three or five. For all that, it’s been extremely competitive, and at 1-1 could be shaping up for a blockbuster second half. After sharing honours on the coast, South Africa and India now move to the pace, true bounce and high altitude of the Highveld with all to play for.Given that both sides are testing out young players and new combinations, neither team will read too much into how individuals have fared so far. South Africa have faced 16 overs from India’s two wristspinners, and scored 91 while losing 12 wickets. The format is different, but Ravi Bishnoi and, in particular, Varun Chakravarthy seem to be exerting the same sort of influence that Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal did on the ODI leg of India’s tour of this country in 2017-18, when they shared 35 wickets in five games.India’s issue is structural, and one that’s cropped up from time to time over recent years: their batting in the first two T20Is seemed to stop at No. 7. They only scored 40 runs in the last six overs of the first match, and failed to turn Sanju Samson’s storming century into a truly awe-inspiring total. In the second, they lost early wickets, and never recovered thanks in part to this lack of depth. How the two teams sort out or work around these issues could well determine how this series finishes.Form guideSouth Africa WLLWL
India LWWWWIn the spotlight – David Miller and Abhishek SharmaIn this series so far, David Miller has been out twice to Varun – the second off a peach that turned past his outside edge and bowled him for a golden duck – in 13 balls, while scoring 14 runs off them. Miller prides himself on his spin game, which he has transformed over the last three years, and will undoubtedly be working extra-hard on picking Varun’s variations and getting on top of him.He announced himself with an audacious 47-ball 100 against Zimbabwe in only his second appearance, but his eight other T20I innings have brought Abhishek Sharma only 70 runs, with only two of them going past the ten-ball mark. Abhishek’s no-holds-barred approach, which is exactly what earned him his international call-up, comes with the in-built risk of early failure, and getting the best out of him will require India’s team management to ensure they judge him on processes and not outcomes, helping him become a more rounded player while backing his attacking instincts.Lutho Sipamla has been brought in for the last two T20Is, and he has form behind him•Getty ImagesTeam newsLutho Sipamla has joined South Africa’s squad for the third and fourth T20Is, and the fast bowler comes into the series with form behind him. First, South Africa clattered their way to 131 in a rain-shortened, 11-overs-a-side contest, only for West Indies to haul down their target with three balls to spare. Then the hosts exacted a spectacular revenge, with Quinton de Kock’s 44-ball 100 helping them haul down 259 in just 18.5 overs and set a new record for the highest T20I chase. Expect plenty of runs, then, though the steep bounce at the venue could also bring fast bowlers into play if there’s a little bit of help from the surface. A clear and pleasant day is expected.3:33

2nd T20I takeaways – Varun, Stubbs, Coetzee show how good they can be

Stats and trivia Of the six South African grounds that have hosted at least three T20Is since the start of the decade, Centurion has been the highest-scoring, with batting teams going at 10.90 per over and averaging 33.25 runs per wicket. Miller (81) has the most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in all T20Is. Varun already has eight wickets in this series, and has a great chance, with two matches remaining, of going past the Indian record of most wickets in a bilateral T20I series of nine, held jointly by R Ashwin and Bishnoi. Since his debut in July 2022, no Full Member player has taken more wickets than Arshdeep’s 89 in T20Is. Arshdeep is well on course to take over as India’s highest wicket-taker in the format, needing just eight more to go past Chahal’s tally of 96.Quotes”Everyone on the team hates losing. In the first game, we didn’t play at our best, if we can call it as it is. And then the second game, the whole focus was just to try and give us the best chance to win. In the second game, we were a lot more focused on winning those small battles because in T20 two or three overs is actually [significant], there’s a lot that can happen. So for us, it was just a focus point in terms of just trying to win those small battles. And I think we won most of the small battles, even though it was a low-scoring game.”
“I’ve had a really good bowling partner in Jassi . He has helped me enormously in taking a lot of wickets by creating pressure from the other end. So a lot of credit goes to him as well. But the main thing is how well I can adapt to the conditions and the situations of the game, how I can attack the batsman early on and take some early wickets. And even at the death how I can outsmart them and bring the game back into our hands.

West Brom could land the dream Johnston replacement in "future superstar"

Ryan Mason currently has his West Bromwich Albion troops out at a pre-season camp in Austria ahead of the new Championship campaign getting underway next month.

A behind-closed-doors friendly match will take place between the Baggies and Dynamo Kyiv this coming Friday to officially get the second-tier side’s pre-season up and running, with Mason perhaps selecting brand-new £4.7m buy Aune Heggebo from the get-go to see what he’s made of in attack.

Mikey Johnston will also be linking up with the pre-season camp shortly, although this isn’t the planned-out route the ex-Celtic winger would have envisaged for himself this summer, as a move to Brazilian giants Flamengo, unfortunately, collapsed at the final hour.

The lowdown on Johnston's failed move to Flamengo

It was a deal that suddenly arrived from left field, but it had been reported that Johnston was going to move out to South America for a fee around the £5m region.

It’s stated that a move fell through – according to reports from Brazil – over concerns emerging over the Republic of Ireland international’s long-term availability fitness-wise, with Johnston prone to significant time out of the Baggies side through injury.

This will have come as a devastating blow to Johnston, considering it was rumoured that the 26-year-old was in line to earn a whopping £1.2m a year at his new Rio De Janeiro home, as opposed to banking £650k a year at the Hawthorns.

It remains to be seen whether the 5-foot-9 winger will be content with staying put at the Championship side after such an ordeal, with the potential loss of Johnston obviously hurting Mason and Co. after he fired home a promising three strikes in league action last season, even as West Brom’s promotion push fell to the wayside.

However, not all hope will be lost if Johnston does move on to another suitor down the line, especially if Mason can flex his past Tottenham Hotspur connections to land this rising North London talent to replace the outgoing Irishman.

Mason's dream Johnston replacement

West Brom has been a hotbed for some exciting, young talent from the Premier League in the not-so-distant past, with Romelu Lukaku once calling the Hawthorns his temporary sanctuary on loan away from parent side Chelsea.

Mikey Moore could be the next future star that gets his senior career up and running in style in the West Midlands, with reports last month speculating that the 17-year-old Spurs prodigy is being looked at by the new Baggies boss, having worked with the teenage sensation when coaching at the Premier League side.

He has already made a splash in the senior side at Thomas Frank’s men, with this sublime solo strike in Europa League action kickstarting his men’s career at Spurs, but he will be desperate for more long-standing first-team opportunities if a move to the Hawthorns is finalised.

Moore might well be ready to take over from Johnston down the left wing if given the chance to do so, with the 17-year-old’s main skills resting on his ability to play across a wide array of attacking positions – away from his blistering powers of picking up goals and assists for fun – including down the ex-Celtic man’s trusty left-hand side.

Indeed, when looking at the above table, it’s clear that Moore can shine all across the attacking positions. But, his preferred position does look to be on the left wing, with a stunning four goals and six assists coming his way here from 18 outings in the English capital.

Therefore, any gaping hole left behind by Johnston down the line could be effectively filled in by the “future superstar”, as he’s been referred to by football analyst Ben Mattinson previously.

After all, he has also been donned as “fearless” by Spurs teammate James Maddison recently, meaning he could take to the pressures of being one of West Brom’s main options here in his stride, with the troubling issue of Johnston wanting to move on resolved by this promising loan capture.

Newcastle and PIF now confident of landing cut-price deal to sign £85m star

In what would be a major boost for their transfer plans, Newcastle United are now reportedly confident of landing a bargain deal to sign an £85m star this summer.

Losing out in the race for Bryan Mbeumo and then Joao Pedro, Newcastle have struggled to land their top targets even after qualifying for the Champions League last season and now they must go back to the drawing board. The money is there for PIF to spend, as highlighted in offers for Anthony Elanga as well as Pedro, but it looks as though whoever arrives will not be Eddie Howe’s top choice.

That’s not to say there is no plan B, however. Since Pedro’s decision to join Chelsea, Newcastle have been linked with moves for the likes of Samu Aghehowa whilst fresh reports have emerged that they’re set to return with another bid for Elanga.

Signing both attacking reinforcements would quickly make their Pedro and Mbuemo failures an afterthought while handing Howe the attacking depth that he has needed for some time.

The partnership that Aghehowa and Elanga could form alongside Alexander Isak is a mouth-watering prospect for those at St James’ Park, who could see their side pick up where they left off after reaching the Champions League and winning the Carabao Cup last season.

Having already seen their first bid rejected for Elanga, the big question will be whether Nottingham Forest will change their stance. After qualifying for Europe themselves last season, the Tricky Trees are in no position to sell their best players and could deal Newcastle an instant blow as a result.

Newcastle confident of landing cut-price Kudus deal

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, PIF and Newcastle are confident of landing a cut-price deal to sign Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United this summer. The Hammers reportedly need to sell their winger in the coming months, which should see his price-tag drop from his £85m release clause towards a far more affordable price.

Leaving Newcastle to take full advantage, Kudus represents an excellent Elanga alternative – especially if he rediscovered his most clinical form at St James’ Park following a tough season in London.

Although Elanga outperformed Kudus on the output front last season, Kudus still stood out at times in a struggling West Ham side and his direct take-on success would provide Newcastle with a unique ball-carrier next season.

Even as the Hammers stuttered, manager Graham Potter was full of praise for his winger, telling reporters in March: “Speaking personally, he’s been great with us in terms of how he’s worked every day, fantastic. He has built his fitness up, built his condition up to the point where he can sustain things a lot better now.”

Celtic now enter race to sign "outstanding" £1m defender to rival Tierney

Celtic are looking to retain their Scottish Premiership title next term and could look to bring in a talented competitor for Kieran Tierney at left-back, according to a report.

Kieran Tierney's Celtic return kicks off busy summer of transfer activity

Brendan Rodgers could be a busy man at Celtic this summer in the transfer window. Tierney’s homecoming at Parkhead should officially be announced any minute as fans wait for confirmation of his return to Glasgow’s east end.

Joining on a free transfer from Arsenal, the Scotland international comes back to his boyhood club on a mission after winning eight trophies during his first spell and establishing himself as a modern-day icon.

Bowing out with a goal in his final appearance for the Gunners at Southampton, Tierney is expected to be joined by Aberdeen goalkeeper Ross Doohan at Celtic.

The Lennoxtown academy graduate came through at the same time as Tierney and will report back to Parkhead once his contract at Aberdeen expires.

Speculation over Rodgers’ future as he enters the final year of his deal has become a talking point in the off-season. Regardless, former scout Mick Brown expects Celtic to spend big this summer following their Scottish Cup final defeat last weekend.

Edouard 2.0: Celtic weighing up record-breaking move for £12m+ "tormentor"

Celtic are reportedly interested in making a club-record move for a striker who could be Odsonne Edouard 2.0.

He stated: “There’s been some talk about the manager’s future as well, and I’m sure he expects to be backed. The board have to show that they’re behind him and they share his ambitions.

“So I think they’ll be prepared to spend big this summer, it’s something they have to do because otherwise they risk that gap closing.”

Tapping into that theme, Celtic are now reportedly eyeing a swoop for a competitor to Tierney who could arrive to strengthen the ranks at left-back.

Celtic enter race to sign Peterborough United left-back Harley Mills

According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic have entered the race to sign Peterborough United full-back Harley Mills as they seek depth to supplement Tierney’s arrival.

Fulham have been interested in the youngster and Peterborough are said to be mulling over a £1 million offer made for his services, though Celtic may now hope to swat aside rival suitors to land their man.

Greg Taylor appears set to leave Parkhead under freedom of contract and no indication has come forth regarding Jeffrey Schlupp returning after his loan spell, which has opened up a space for Mills to potentially join Celtic and rival Tierney if they can push a deal over the line.

Everton chiefs ready to back Moyes and go for his dream playmaker signing

Everton are on the verge of entering a new era under David Moyes and he has now identified an exciting transfer target that their hierarchy are willing to heavily pursue, per reports.

Everton look forward to a new dawn under David Moyes

The Toffees are on the verge of ending their lengthy association with Goodison Park, and it isn’t in the least bit surprising that supporters are fighting tooth and nail to witness their final match against Southampton in L4. David Moyes has steadied the ship at Everton and secured their Premier League status for another year, paving the way for an exciting summer under the guise of The Friedkin Group.

PSR regulations will ensure that clever additions need to be uncovered to avoid any conflict, though it is fair to say the Blues aren’t alone in that regard. According to reports, Everton are eyeing a move for Lazio loanee Nuno Tavares, who is expected to complete a permanent switch to the Italian giants this summer and then be sold on for profit.

He could be set for an immediate return to the English top-flight if circumstances align. The former Benfica man could be joined by Emanuel Emegha after the Dutch forward emerged as another Toffees target.

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s uncertain future on Merseyside has hastened the search for a new midfielder as his contract runs into its final few weeks. Notably, West Ham United’s Tomas Soucek and Sunderland wonderkid Chris Rigg have been mentioned as alternative targets.

Furthermore, any move for Hamer may hinge on whether Sheffield United claim promotion from the Championship, where they are set for the playoffs after Leeds United and Burnley sealed a return to the top-flight.

Everton are in the market for talent to rejuvenate their squad and Hamer would be a terrific asset that would please supporters should he arrive this summer.

Worth more than VDV: Spurs have struck gold on their "Swiss army knife"

It’s unfortunate but undeniable: the wheels are coming off for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Australian’s time in North London started so positively as a ten-game unbeaten streak actually had them at the top of the Premier League for a time.

However, this season has been a total disaster, and while there is still a chance they win the Europa League, it feels like his time is up in N17.

With that said, even though so much has gone wrong, Postecoglou has overseen some brilliant signings, including one now worth millions more than Micky van de Ven.

Postecoglou's best Spurs signings

So, before getting to the player in question, it’s worth reviewing some of the best additions made under Ange’s tenure, starting with perhaps one of the best bargains in recent years: Lucas Bergvall.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

The midfield maestro only cost the club around £8.5m last winter, and since officially joining up with the squad at the start of this summer, he’s seen his valuation explode with Football Transfers now valuing him at €31.3m, which comes out to about £27m.

It’s not hard to understand why this has happened as, despite being just 19 years old, the “generational” talent, as dubbed by journalist Mitch Fretton, has made 44 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring one goal, providing four assists and making some of the team’s senior midfielder look bad.

Drop back into defence, and we come across another of the manager’s best signings, Van de Ven.

The Flying Dutchman joined the North Londoners for around £43m in the summer of 2023, and while he has undoubtedly had more than his fair share of injury problems since then, he’s been incredible when he’s played.

While the 24-year-old is a “complete & dominant” centre-back, as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, it’s no secret that one of his greatest strengths is his sensational speed, which is what allows the team to play such a high line at times.

For example, in a game against Brentford last season, the Wormer-born titan set a new Premier League record for fastest sprint, coming in at an incredible 37.38km/h.

Since joining the club, Van de Ven has seen his valuation increase to €62m per Football Transfers, which is about £53m, and yet even with that increase, there is another Postecoglou signing who is worth millions more.

So, while some of you may be thinking of players like Dominic Solanke or maybe even Brennan Johnson for the goals he’s scored this season, you’d be wrong.

Instead, the man in question is none other than teenage sensation Archie Gray, who only joined the club for around £30m from Leeds United last summer.

However, in the almost ten months since that deal was agreed, the youngster’s valuation has exploded, with Football Transfers now pricing him at an astounding €72.5m, which comes out to around £62m, or £32m more than his transfer fee and £9m more than Van de Ven’s current valuation.

Now, that might sound rather absurd to some of you out there, but we reckon it’s not far off the mark, as while he’s seen his game time reduced somewhat in recent weeks, the Englishman has undoubtedly been one of the Lilywhites’ most impressive performers this term.

For example, due to the injury crisis earlier this season, the “ridiculous” talent, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, had to step into the defence, and despite being a central midfielder by trade, he did a commendable job.

Across all competitions, the Durham-born gem has made 19 appearances at centre-back, eight at right-back, five at left-back and just three in defensive midfield, lending credence to Kulig’s description of him as a “Swiss army knife.”

Ultimately, this season has been a trial by fire for the Lilywhites’ exciting crop of youngsters, and like the rest of them, Gray has come through it with flying colours and is looking better than ever.
