Do Barnes’ Liverpool transfer claims have merit?

John Barnes reckons that if Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are unhappy at the club, then they should both follow Benitez out of Merseyside this summer.

So, the question is, has Barnes’s latest assessment of his former club proven his lack football knowledge? Or is the Anfield legend’s latest statement of his former club a correct one?

Liverpool have had one of their worst season’s in recent memory. They finished in 7th place in the Premier League, Internal chaos caused major problems between the clubs owners and Benitez, and as a result, the Spaniard decided to leave the club last week, which may spark a mass exodus of players at the Merseyside club this summer.

Nonetheless, Liverpool legend John Barnes feels that if any player is unhappy at the club then they should leave, including the likes of Gerrard and Torres. Barnes claimed:

“Liverpool don’t want Gerrard and Torres to go – but if they don’t want to be there, let them move on. The fans would have to understand that and still get behind the club.”

He finishes off by saying:

“Any player who doesn’t want to be at Liverpool should go… no matter who they are.”

The former Kop winger spent 10 years at the Merseyside club and Barnes believes that Liverpool can survive even if the Kop do lose their biggest stars this summer. He also believes that too much focus on the Liverpool captain and Spanish striker this season has affected the team in whole.

“Look at this history of the club, Kevin Keegan went and people were worried but they got stronger. Kenny Dalglish was a legend but he retired and left and they’ve gone on and won trophies since then.”

Barnes added:

“I think there has been too much focus on Gerrard and Torres. They are important players but that affected a lot of the others in the team. The more we focus on them, the more we believe we can’t compete without them.”

Some (if not all) Liverpool fans reading this may think Barnes needs to check himself into a psychiatric ward, as many would believe that losing Gerrard and especially Torres would be suicide for the club. These fans maybe correct in their assessment of the situation, however, does Barnes have a point to? If a player seems displeased, then is there any point of keeping him at the club?

Granted, Gerrard and Torres are the biggest stars of Liverpool and no doubt keep the side ticking. The likely departure of the duo this summer, in retrospect, would spell the end for the Merseyside club in many fans eyes. It is believed that Liverpool have minimal funds available to strengthen their team this summer, and in order to gain money they would have to sell their stars.

Gerrard and Torres have not yet stated if they wish to stay at the club next season or not, claiming they will decide their future after the World Cup. This has not helped the situation, and their words have left Liverpool fans sweating until the completion of the tournament.

Nonetheless, two players do not make a club, and like Barnes has declared, if the duo are unhappy with the current circumstances then they may as well leave, even if it means years of rebuilding for the famous English club.

West Ham fans are eager to sign Joao Mario after Saturday goal

West Ham United are celebrating securing their Premier League status tonight after a win against Leicester City and results elsewhere mean they can not be relegated this season.

Their 2-0 win away to the Foxes meant that a Southampton win later in the day would keep the Saints in touch, but a last minute Everton goal ensured the Hammers will start next term in the top-flight.

Fans were obviously delighted with the victory, offering particular praise to on-loan Joao Mario, whose goal opened the scoring before Mark Noble put the three points beyond doubt.

Mario has only made 12 appearances since joining in January but some supporters believe he has already shown enough to earn a permanent move to the London Stadium this summer.

Will the Hammers pay the money to sign him from Inter Milan or will they pass on the opportunity?

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

How Man United could help ‘cripple’ Man City this summer

As much as Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal would love to have Sergio Aguero in his squad, capturing his main rivals’ biggest asset is virtually unthinkable.

But the United coach could put the wheels in motion to facilitate the superstar leaving City by his dealings elsewhere.

There are of course lots of factors at play but if the Red Devils are shrewd in their transfer manoeuvres this summer, their neighbours could come under pressure to part with their star man.

One of Van Gaal’s own trump cards, goalkeeper David De Gea , looks to be top of the shopping list at Real Madrid. A bid from the Spanish giants for the prized shot stopper seems imminent. Much speculation had pointed towards United attempting to use this as leverage to lure Gareth Bale back to the Premiership after his turbulent second season at the Bernabeu.

Talk of Bale leaving seems to have cooled recently, and the Madrid press are suggesting that his team mate Karim Benzema is now the most likely makeweight in any De Gea deal.

[ffc-gal cat=”Manchester-United” no=”5″]

United are expected to be in the market for another striker after Radamel Falcao’s unsuccessful loan ended, Wayne Rooney returned a low goal tally and Robin Van Persie showed signs that his powers are on the wane. Should the Old Trafford outfit opt for, and be successful in acquiring Benzema, his current employers would need to repair a gaping hole in their forward line.

When Real Madrid find such a void in their squad, only a handful of players will do.

Aguero is a ready-made Galactico if ever there was one. He is already a global mega-star, and at 27 is in the prime of his career. He comes with a prolific scoring record, crowd pleasing skills and he even already has the tattoos and haircut.

The Argentine would also have few problems settling in, having spent five years already in Madrid with Atletico. His creativity, industry and comfort at operating anywhere in the final third would make him perfect foil for Cristiano Ronaldo and Bale. Those three as a strike force would be comparable to even the feared trio at Barcelona.

Manchester City, however, are about as far away from a selling club as it is possible to get.

The super-rich Etihad side can be boisterous in the transfer market without having to sell star players and Aguero is no doubt a key component of their plans to reclaim their lost league crown and finally make a sustained assault on the Champions League.

“Kun” may soon grow a little impatient, though.

He has now been in Manchester for four seasons and City have yet to get beyond the second round. He will also be conscious that this summer is likely to be one of transition in the blue half of Manchester and that his next potential transfer will be his last big move.

Should he decide that he wants to leave Eastlands, his employers would find it difficult to stop him, despite their vast financial muscle.

He perfectly fits the profile of Real’s signing policy and Los Merengues will be waiting to pounce at even the slightest hint of unrest, even though they have identified De Gea as the priority during this coming window.

So what of Benzema?

The Frenchman is the same age as Aguero but has already won everything possible in the white of Madrid. Throughout his time at the Bernabeu, Benzema has regularly been linked with the exit door especially when not assured of a starting spot.

Last season though, the former Lyon man played a key role and there seems little reason for him to want out at present with four years remaining on his contract.

Perhaps a chance to step out of the shadow of Ronaldo and seek a new challenge in the Premier League would be enough to tempt him.

It is unclear if United are even interested in the forward at this stage but if they were to make a move, involving De Gea or otherwise, it could pave the way for Madrid to identify Aguero as their next marquee signing.

West Brom in good position to secure loan move

West Brom ‘are in a good position’ to take loan striker Romelu Lukaku back to the Hawthorns next season, according to Steve Clarke.

The Baggies boss snapped up 19-year-old Lukaku on loan last summer and the youngster has been a huge success at the Hawthorns with 13 Premier League goals to his name to date.

Clarke has always maintained that he would like to take Lukaku on loan for another season, although Swansea and Italian side Fiorentina have emerged as potential suitors with both able to offer the player European football.

Chelsea are also waiting to see who replaces interim coach Rafael Benitez in the summer – and if they are successful in bringing in another striker – which would allow Lukaku to be loaned out again.

But Clarke is in no doubt that Albion will be at the front of the queue if the opportunity to re-sign Lukaku emerges.

He told the Birmingham Mail: “Nobody knows where he will be next season even though I keep getting asked this.

“Next season the parent club will decide whether to keep him or let him go out on loan.

“All I would say is that if he goes back out on loan I think we’re in a good position to get him again.

“He loves it here, he’s been positive about the club, he’s been nominated for young player of the year, which tells you that he’s had a good season, so I think he will be happy here.”

Man United 0-1 Arsenal: An important reminder of where Arsenal were and where they want to be

Upon the backdrop of Arsene Wenger’s impending departure, Arsenal’s trip to Old Trafford this Sunday is an important reminder of the dizzying heights the north Londoners once reached and the level of ambition the club must look to re-conquer as they enter a new era.

Transforming from a club just about surviving in the shadow of the best in the Premier League, to one that can not only compete with but even overcome them on their own patch to seal a place in history.

Aside from the incredible Invincibles campaign, Old Trafford remains the setting of Wenger’s greatest feat as Arsenal boss, masterminding a victory at the home of the Gunners’ keenest competitors in the Premier League that season and the club that had become amongst their fiercest rivals to win the 2001/02 title.

Manchester United’s three-goal comeback at the Etihad Stadium to deny Manchester City lifting the title in early April this year, which truly confounded the tips at OpenOdds, highlighted how desperate clubs will always be to not directly concede England’s footballing crown to their most bitter of foes.

That desperation only doubles if not quadruples when hosting the champions in waiting; returning from the proverbial Mecca of your enemy with blood-soaked shirts and trophy aloft is the kind of folklore that becomes immortalised. Those on the receiving end will never be allowed to forget it – it’s etched in history, forever indisputable.

Wenger’s done it twice during his 22-year reign – the Invincibles secured their title with a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane. But in the context of the Frenchman stepping down and Arsenal’s current complexion compared to a defiant performance at Old Trafford 16 years ago, the 1-0 away win over United feels particularly significant, not least because it was actually a largely underwhelming game that had to be shrewdly negotiated through.

Indeed, Wenger’s Arsenal will always be associated with gorgeous football, potency in attack and technically gifted players. But that was only one dimension of Wenger’s philosophy back in 2002; there was a ruggedness, a bullishness, an intensity and a physicality about them as well. That day, the heart of Arsenal’s defence consisted of Sol Campbell and Martin Keown – Tony Adams being absent through injury – while the engine room had Patrick Vieira and Ray Parlour at its heart.

Football, in general, has softened up since then, but the contrast with Arsenal’s current squad is particularly severe. The closest thing Arsenal now have to a midfield hardman is Mohamed Elneny or Granit Xhaka, and the closest thing they have to a warrior centre-half is Shkodran Mustafi.

Without that robust, gritty and perhaps most importantly, savvy core, it’s unlikely Arsenal would have won the game at Old Trafford. During the early stages, United were on the front foot, pinning the visitors back into own half. But Arsenal coped as well with the pressure then as badly as they tend to now, and after surviving the onslaught reversed the tide of the match in the second half.

It began with a handful of half-chances for the Gunners, Sylvain Wiltord almost finding Edu with a cross and a Fabian Barthez clearance almost falling straight to the French forward, and ten minutes on from the interval, the deadlock was finally broken in the most un-Arsenal of fashions – Freddie Ljungberg nicked the ball off a lackadaisical Mikael Silvestre, Barthez parried the Swedish midfielder’s shot and Wiltord fired home a virtually unmissable rebound.

There were no delicate one-twos, Mesut-Ozil-esque eye-of-the-needle through balls, rabonas or step-overs; Arsenal simply willed the ball into the net, just as they spent the remaining 35 minutes willing it out of their own as United staged another sustained advance.

The Gunners held on to clinch the clean sheet, the win, the title and their place in history, humbling United in front of their own fans. And while there were eye-catching patterns of play in small doses, it was mainly done the hard way, through energy, commitment and resilience.

The other key contrast between Arsenal then and now is how they perform on the road; from winning the title on the patch of bitter rivals that had lifted it the year previous, Arsenal have beaten reigning champions just once away from home since the start of the 2009/10 season.

Back in 2001/02, Arsenal didn’t lose a single away game; this term, Arsenal have lost nine of their 16 away fixtures and are the only team in English football yet to win an away point in 2018. That 1-0 at Old Trafford was their ninth away clean sheet in the Premier League; this season, they’ve managed just two.

When Arsenal return there this Sunday, there won’t be much on the line. Manchester United will finish in the top four, Arsenal will finish outside of it, Manchester United are focused on their FA Cup final, Arsenal are desperate to claim their spot in the Europa League equivalent.

Aside from providing potentially the final chapter in Wenger’s heated rivalry with Jose Mourinho, there really isn’t all that much incentive for either team on Sunday.

And yet, for the travelling Arsenal fans, it will be a timely reminder of how great their club once was, how invincible their manager once appeared. Arsenal are capable of returning to that point of imperiousness once again, when they’re winning titles at the home of their rivals, but they must recover a mindset that has somehow become skewed, twisted and morphed over the last 16 years.

Fine football is all well and good but there must be a substance to it as well – that’s what Arsenal have somehow lost.

Five Gareth Bale alternatives for Man United to consider

Manchester United’s pursuit of Gareth Bale has become one of English football’s most hotly-discussed topics since rumours of an Old Trafford switch first surfaced earlier in the season.

Indeed, the Red Devils need a wide-man and the Real Madrid star fits the bill perfectly, boasting incredible athleticism, talismanic firepower and a proven track record in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, however, it appears the European champions aren’t actually that interested in selling their world-record £87million signing this summer.

Despite having to bear the brunt of the supporters’ wrath following a disappointing El Clasico performance in March, Real Madrid have continually denied Bale will be put on the transfer market this summer, and reports from Mirror Football claim the Bernabeu outfit have already rejected a bid from Chelsea.

So with the summer window looming in, perhaps it’s time the Red Devils began considering some viable alternatives to the former Tottenham star. And just in case they’re short on ideas, we’ve listed FIVE…

[interaction id=“none”]

PEDRO

Spain international Pedro has been part of the Barcelona tapestry for some time, claiming four La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues and 97 goals in 310 appearances with the Catalan giants – in addition to lifting the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European championship with La Roja.

But the 27 year-old’s Nou Camp tenure could come to an abrupt end this summer; there’s only a year remaining on his contract and the winger-forward’s game time has been slashed since the £75million arrival of Luis Suarez at the start of the campaign, going on to make just 13 starts out of a possible 32 in La Liga.

Alexis Sanchez has lit up the Premier League since moving to Arsenal from Barcelona last summer and his former team-mate has the capacity to do the same, blessed with a similar blend of tenacity, technical quality and netting prowess.

According to The Metro, he could be available for around £22million, but unable to sign a replacement until January 2016 due to their transfer embargo, Barcelona may refuse to sell.

MEMPHIS DEPAY

A transfer target Manchester United have already made some headway in signing, reports from the Manchester Evening News this morning claim Memphis Depay has arrived in England to hold talks with the Red Devils.

Much like Gareth Bale, the Netherlands international is a goal-scoring winger often compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, and after a sensational season with PSV is widely expected to leave the Eindhoven outfit this summer.

Indeed, since his nomination for the Best Young Player award at last summer’s World Cup, the 21 year-old has bagged 20 goals in 27 league appearances, firing him to the top of the Eredivisie’s scoring charts and PSV to their first Dutch title since 2008.

He’s a prodigious talent who already has experience working under Louis van Gaal, and the papers believe his price-tag stands at a more than reasonable £25million.

LUCAS MOURA

Manchester United came close to signing Lucas Moura in summer 2013 and would be well-advised to revive their interest in the Brazilian prodigy after an impressive campaign 2014/15 with PSG.

Indeed, the 22 year-old has claimed seven goals and four assists in 25 Ligue 1 appearances this term, whilst averaging the most dribbles per-match, 3.3, of any player in the division.

In addition to the Brazil international’s promising output, it’s his electric pace that particularly stands out. United have lacked a threat behind opposition defences for large periods of the season, but Moura would address that in abundance.

According to a recent report from The Metro, stalled contract talks could force the Ligue 1 champions to cash-in on the winger this summer as they refuse to meet his demands of a £4.3million per-year deal.

The British newspaper also claim PSG value him within the region of £28million.

MARCO REUS

Marco Reus may have signed a contract extension earlier this season, eradicating his miserly £25million release clause, but Borussia Dortmund’s failure to qualify for the Champions League – and the subsequent sacking of manager Jurgen Klopp – could see him leave the Westfalen outfit this summer.

The 25 year-old is undoubtedly one of the most formidable attacking threats in world football, boasting an incredible 37 goals and 27 assists in his last 79 Bundesliga appearances.

He’s quick, technically sublime and incredibly versatile, capable of playing anywhere across the attacking midfield berth or the front-line, quenching Louis van Gaal’s undying first for ‘multi-functional’ footballers.

Having extended his terms until 2019, however, Dortmund are no under no immediate obligation to sell. Resultantly, they could charge anything up to £50million for the German international this summer.

RAHEEM STERLING

It would go down as one of the most controversial transfers in Premier League history but there are few better prospects in Europe at the minute than Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling.

After all, few attacking midfielders can boast 18 goals and 14 assists in the Premier League at just 20 years of age – not to mention the European Golden Boy award for his role in Liverpool’s surprise title bid last season.

But what impresses me most about the England international is his devotion to development; this season he’s featured in five different positions for the Reds and performed well in all of them, ranging from right wing-back to false nine.

He’s yet another multi-functional footballer Louis van Gaal would love and although some view Sterling as too young to leave Anfield this summer, I’d argue the exact opposite. He’s registered the most goals, chances created per match, successful dribbles per match and second-most assists of any player in a fifth-place Liverpool side.

Impressive stuff, but in addition to all the inevitable controversy of becoming the first player to directly move between Liverpool and Manchester United since Phil Chisnall in 1964, the Red Devils would have to pay £50million – according to The Telegraph.

Time running out for QPR midfielder

Park Ji-Sung is to meet with boss Harry Redknapp at the end of the season to discuss his future after claims he could quit the game.

The South Korean has suffered a miserable time with injuries this season with the 32-year-old managing just 22 appearances for QPR this season.

In addition to his struggles with injuries, the club’s fight against relegation from the Premier League has taken its toll and the £2million summer signing from Manchester United is reconsidering his future in the game, according to his father.

“Nobody knows the future, but I think he has made his mind up to retire. He thinks he’s played enough,” the player’s father said.

“He’s never had times like this with PSV Eindhoven or Manchester United. My son has had difficult times at QPR this season; it was a new experience to him.

“Ji-Sung said it’s difficult to keep his feel for the game as his playing time is inconsistent, but he doesn’t have any hard feelings.”

Arsenal fans blame dismal run on away kit

When a team is going through a rough patch on the pitch, it is easy to clutch at anything possible to blame.

For Arsenal fans, they have taken aim at various players, manager Arsene Wenger and now, the club’s away kit.

The latest frustration came at St James’ Park where the Gunners were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United on Sunday.

Alexandre Lacazette put the North London outfit in a positive position by scoring inside the first 15 minutes of the encounter.

[ad_pod ]

However, Rafael Benitez’s side got themselves back into the contest thanks to a goal from Ayoze Perez close to the half-hour mark.

In the second half, Matt Ritchie wrapped up a shock win for the Magpies, which kept Arsenal 13 points adrift of the top four with five games left to play.

To make matters worse, fans have been coming to terms with the fact that the Gunners are the only club in England’s top four divisions that have not picked up a single point away from home in 2018.

Some have taken their anger out on the club’s blue away kit.

Wanted by Man United and Spurs: Why this Dutchman is set to be the Premier League’s next star

From Dennis Bergkamp to Edwin van der Sar, Robin van Persie to Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Premier League has a venerable history of Dutch stars gracing English football’s top flight.

With the strength of the domestic game in the Netherlands less than that of Europe’s major top flights, the Eredivisie is regularly raided for its brightest stars.

There is no shortage of young talent in the Eredivisie this season, with a number of stars plying their trade for table-topping PSV Eindhoven.

With Phillip Cocu’s men eager to end a four-year Ajax title streak, a young Philips Stadion outfit have been widely praised for their expansive and attacking brand of football.

Despite the likes of Luuk de Jong and Adam Maher playing a significant role in PSV’s excellent form, the undoubted star of the show is Memphis Depay.

Following impressive cameos for the Netherlands at the summer’s World Cup, Depay has taken Dutch football by storm this season.

His devastating pace and trickery have been backed up with a lethal eye for goal, with the powerful winger topping the Eredivisie scoring charts with 16 strikes from midfield this term.

Although there is room for the 21-year-old to improve, especially in relation to his final ball and delivery, Depay has all the hallmarks of a future Premier League superstar.

With PSV surely set to struggle to hold onto their prize asset this summer, the list of suitors for the attacker’s signature is extensive.

[ad_pod id=’ffc-video-small’ align=’left’]

Two sides thought to be at the head of the queue for Depay’s hand are Manchester United and Tottenham, with the Premier League sides seemingly set to go head-to-head for him this summer.

The link to the Old Trafford side is natural given Depay’s connection to Louis van Gaal from the Dutch national set-up.

A switch to the Manchester-based club would inject energy, dynamism and penetration to a United attack that has been pedestrian at times this term.

With the versatility to play anywhere across the forward line, Depay could be an exciting addition for the Red Devils.

Spurs meanwhile have faced issues on the right-hand side of their 4-2-3-1 formation, with neither Andros Townsend nor Erik Lamela consistently delivering.

Spurs lack width on the right, while a star player to take some of the pressure off key attacking duo Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen would surely be very welcome.

With Depay showing for club and country that he has the ability to score from midfield, the White Hart Lane outfit would surely be a much more menacing proposition with the Dutchman in their ranks.

Dutch scout Ed van Steijn, who is accredited with unearthing a young Cristiano Ronaldo in his Sporting Lisbon days, recently told the press in his homeland that Depay is a more promising talent than the Portuguese was at the same stage of his career.

With his superstar status already being confirmed in his homeland, Depay is ready for the next step in his career and looks set to be an exciting addition to English football regardless of which club he signs for.

Tottenham ace looking forward to the business end

Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel says that his sides big-game players will thrive when it comes down to the business end of the season, according to the Sun.

Tottenham were on a three game losing streak until their 2-1 win over Swansea on Saturday, with Wales winger Bale yet again the difference .

The London club now have a busy period ahead of them starting tomorrow, as they face Swiss side Basel in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.

Andre Villas-Boas and his men then have a tough home game against Everton before they’re back on their travels again, with the return leg of the Europa League in Basel, Switzerland.

But American keeper Friedel is looking forward to the run in: “I think it is better for us that we now have some tough games coming up.

“The bigger the game, the more the players will step up to the plate.”

Brad Friedel is Andre Villas-Boas’ first choice keeper when it comes to European games, and the former Blackburn keeper insists the win at Swansea on Saturday just goes to show that him and his teammates hold no nerves after their recent blip.
