The Reason For these Chelsea Blues?

“Don’t expect something from one man.”

The first phrase uttered by Andre Villas-Boas upon his unveiling as the new messiah, tasked with reigniting Chelsea’s journey towards European domination. Despite an equally impressive record at Porto, he was keen to distance himself from his Portuguese predecessor.

There were no brash claims of superiority, instead he wanted “to create a dynamic group of everybody getting together.” Villas-Boas clearly understood the challenge ahead of him, but a constant struggle to exert himself in the dressing room has meant he is still the ‘self-effacing one’ rather than the ‘special one’.

Fast forward exactly eight months and Chelsea find themselves licking their wounds after a humbling defeat in Naples. The front three of Cavani, Hamsik and the sublime Lavezzi tore a Terry-less Chelsea defence apart with their intricate movement and deadly speed on the counter attack. The Blues failed to inflict the same misery on a equally susceptible Napoli backline, which has often been the case in front of goal this season.

It’s clear that alongside assistant manager Roberto Di Matteo there’s a potential to succeed, both have a deep understanding of the game but they both fail to create that presence on the touchline. AVB’s trademark crouch merely creates the effect of a man trying desperately to hide from the glaring spotlight.

Yet it’s evident that the landmark Chelsea figures are yearning for the return of Jose Mourinho, with reports of constant communication via text message serving only to fuel speculation. AVB strikes me as Mourinho without the bravado, a blessing for the neutral supporter but it means the egos at Chelsea are starved of the confidence Jose used to inspire within them. Regardless, how can a manager make his mark on a team of unprofessional professionals?

Club captain John Terry is without question the Braveheart character of the Chelsea backline and his performances this season have proven he can still go toe to toe with the very best. However, on more than one occasion the skipper has looked over to the bench and slung his arms up in air, an apparent act of despair as his defensive counterparts fail to match his expectations. A sign of understandable annoyance or immature petulance?

Frank Lampard sits alongside Terry as a key figure in the dressing room but he has endured much of this season as a spectator, which has won AVB few fans. Idolised on the terraces Lampard’s exclusion from the first team has left a severe lack of creativity in the heart of midfield. AVB is clearly making a point with his omission of Lampard, perhaps shining a light on his attitude in training or his reluctance to adapt his game at the manager’s discretion.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

Didier Drogba is no longer the pedigree racehorse that used to strut around the pitch at Stamford Bridge. His vast arrogance was usually tolerated as he swept aside any defensive pairing with his brute force and clinical eye for goal. Nowadays his pace and first touch appear to be filtering away, which has seen him drift to the wing in search of a timid, young full back, and to presumably keep Fernando Torres company. Napoli’s vulnerable rearguard would have been easy prey for the Ivorian in his prime but alongside Kalou and Malouda, Drogba has failed to recreate his exceptional and uncompromising performances for his new manager.

Although Drogba has dismissed reports that he wrestled the team talk from AVB at half time against Birmingham. The fact that these stories are emerging speaks volumes about the growing unrest at the club. Perhaps the best way to encourage this underperforming team is for the senior players to get behind AVB, both on the pitch as well as in the papers. I can’t imagine the likes of Rio and Rooney chipping in with their two cents after Fergie is done talking. Player power is rife at Chelsea and needs to be subdued before the club can move forward.

Perhaps the biggest ego in the dressing room sits at the top the tree, Roman Abramovich often sees fit to berate his team after every unconvincing performance. No good has ever come from a chairman interfering with the managers role at the club. What he should be doing is publically backing his expensive manager, rather than have the poor man answer questions about his future during every single interview. This sends a clear message to the fans and the press that he is here to stay, and would no doubt force a reaction out of any disgruntled players.

In AVB’s defence he has sought to remove the disruptive elements from his squad by putting the inconsistent Alex on the Eurostar to Paris whilst sending the infamous Le Sulk half way round the world to China. The January window provided an ample opportunity to address Chelsea’s defensive frailties but the apparent refusal to throw new signing Gary Cahill straight into an ailing defence would suggest this was another example of Roman’s influence on the team.

This brings me onto former-and-yet-current Genk winger Kevin de Bruyne, “a target decided by the club” who cost a reported £9m. Why an earth wasn’t that money given to Villas-Boas to fund one or two loan deals or a move for the likes of Chris Samba, who would almost certainly provide a solution (albeit short-term) to their fragile defence.

The senior Chelsea players appear incapable of falling in line behind a man who’s shared a similar number of birthdays. Chelsea’s brightest lights have been the fresh-faced Sturridge, Mata and Ramires who are ten years younger than AVB not ten months. A quick glance at the Porto squad who enjoyed so much success under AVB, reveals just one player over the age of 30. That Player was goalkeeper Helton Arruda and we all know they get better with age. Is this evidence of an ill thought out decision by Abramovich, bringing an inexperienced individual to manage an ageing team, clouded by his desire to replicate the success under Jose Mourinho?

AVB has two main options, either succumb to the growing murmurs around him and stick with his established professionals or hail a new dawn by putting faith in the next generation. I for one would much rather see the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Daniel Sturridge spearhead the Chelsea attack rather than the impotent duo of Torres and Drogba. I mean, they can hardly score fewer goals can they?

Perhaps it’s time for Roman to shift his allegiance from his seasoned internationals to the young prospects that will help form the future of Chelsea football club. Only time will tell whether he includes AVB in that vision.

'StarPlayer' – changes the landscape of football apps

My personal experience of football apps in the past has generally been one of disappointment as none of them really capture the imagination, or offer anything unique or new to the table. You can therefore understand my uncertainty when I was invited to the launch of Heineken’s new Champions League app ‘StarPlayer’ – although it only took five minutes of Manchester United’s tie at the Gelsenkirchen to realise I was bearing witness to the changing of the football app landscape. StarPlayer is unbelievably addictive and certainly offers a welcome complement to LIVE football.

StarPlayer provides a unique overlay to live football matches. You simply watch the football on TV while playing StarPlayer in real-time, anticipating events unfolding on the pitch live and making decisions on what will play out over the next few seconds.

To score points, you simply have to anticipate what will happen at key moments such as corners, free kicks, and penalties, for example whether the shot will be saved or whether there will be a goal in the next 30 seconds. With every correct forecast, you gain points. During lulls within the game there are also random questions that buzz up on the screen in which you can answer to earn yourself extra points. Once the game is over you can click on the ‘Interactive Champions League’, where you can also compete and share with their friends via Facebook and with other players around the world – FINALLY an app with real meaning and one that allows you to pick your brains and test your anticipation against likeminded football supporters.

As the game in Gelsenkirchen unfolded I have to confess that my anticipation was not as hot as I first thought it would be. I wasted four of my eight goal attempts in the first half an hour, largely down to Javier Hernandez and Ryan Giggs’ wastefulness in front of goal. My instincts at set-pieces also proved dismal as I realised that the vast majority of times the chances were ‘missed’ rather than my natural reaction that the ball will be ‘cleared’. Thank the lord that the bonus questions came to my rescue and gave me some points so I could briefly flirt at the top end of the VIP league, although I found myself dropping down the table as I mistimed hitting the 30 second goal button for the two United goals. I won’t go into my final finishing place as the game ended, although the app did flash up at the end to tell me, in no uncertain terms, that I could have done a lot better.

StarPlayer is totally addictive and I certainly couldn’t wait for the next day’s match at the Bernabeu to attempt to learn from my previous mistakes and tactics from the night before. I have to concede that I did perform slightly better, although I really need to be slightly more reserved with the ‘Goal’ button, as I had wasted all my chances as Messi’s late brace killed off my chances of winning my particular league. My performance was less shabby though and I am fully motivated for the next Champions League outing on Tuesday night at the Camp Nou.

Why not sign up yourself today for FREE and join in this StarPlayer experience – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Alex McLeish welcomes Birmingham dilemma

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has welcomed the selection dilemma that the availability of new signings is giving him.

McLeish has deadline-day signings Alex Hleb and Jean Beausejour available for Saturday's derby trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Hleb, who is on a season-long loan from Barcelona, has recovered from an ankle injury while Chile international Beausejour has finally received his international clearance to play in the Premier League.

"Hleb is looking good and it is great to see his undoubted quality on the training field," McLeish told the club's official website.

"He's a little bit behind the players in terms of games played because the other players played six games in pre-season as well as some practice matches and also the start of the campaign.

"Hleb's not played too many games at all – two international games and he came back with a slight injury, but he's trained this week.

QPR v Wigan Athletic – Match Preview

Mark Hughes takes charge of his first home game as QPR boss and will be hoping to guide his side out of the bottom three at the expense of fellow strugglers Wigan.

Defeat at Newcastle was Rangers’ seventh in the last nine games as Hughes started his reign off on a sour note. Wins haven’t been easy to come by lately with their last three point haul coming against Stoke in mid-November; a record that ultimately cost Neil Warnock his job. Scoring goals remains a big problem for the R’s and they could have left Tyneside with a point on Sunday had they not wasted some good opportunities. Jay Bothroyd, Heidar Helguson and Shaun Wright-Phillips were all guilty of squandering chances once again and all three need to be start being more clinical in front of goal if the club is to remain in the Premier League.  Blackburn’s win on Saturday pushed them into the drop zone and on the evidence of their form over the past two months relegation is a real possibility. Their home record is also something that needs improving with Rangers winning just once at Loftus Road all season. Hughes is already trying to fix his new sides goal scoring issue after placing a bid for Sao Paulo starlet Henrique and will hope to have him in time for their game against Wigan to kick-start the club’s survival bid.

The Latics are also deep in trouble after their defeat at home to Manchester City on Monday left them rooted to the foot of the table. Despite the loss manager Roberto Martinez will be encouraged by the performance of his players especially those in defence who continually thwarted the league leaders. Ali Al Habsi, in particular, will come in for special praise after pulling off a number of stunning saves to keep his side in the game. Gary Caldwell and Antonio Alacaraz also performed admirably against City’s world-class attack and will be confident of keeping QPR’s goal shy strike force at bay. It’s in the final third that Wigan need to improve with Victor Moses and Hugo Rodallega still struggling to find the net on a regular basis. However they’ll be confident of getting back on the goal trail in West London on Saturday as they aim to lift the club out of danger and improve a record that has seen them score just eight times away from the DW Stadium.

QPR 18th : 17 points

Last six: L L L D L L

Team news: Joey Barton is still suspended following his red card at Norwich with no new injuries to report for Mark Hughes’ side.

Key Player: Heidar Helguson

Despite failing to score against Newcastle on Sunday Helguson always posed a threat whether it was in the air or around the six-yard area. QPR will need the Icelandic international to step up once again this season to ensure they don’t fall to another home defeat.

Wigan Athletic 20th : 15 points

Last six: L L D L D D

Team news: Shaun Maloney could make his return from a calf injury with Chris Kirkland the only other player sidelined for Wigan.

Key Player: Victor Moses

Another lively display on Monday night will have further enhanced Moses’ reputation as he caused endless problems for league leaders City. Despite his poor goal record the wingers pace and trickery is always a threat for Wigan.

PREDICTION

Morale is low at Loftus Road and Mark Hughes has a huge job to get his side playing with confidence and more importantly; scoring goals! Despite being bottom Wigan continue to employ their slick passing philosophy and stand a good chance of leaving Loftus Road with all three points.

Score: 0-1

Premier League: Manchester United 1 Everton 0

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez scored a dramatic late winner to land a crucial blow to their rivals in their bid for the league title.United looked like dropping crucial points for the second time in a week against a stubborn Everton side until Hernandez’s stunning 84th-minute strike.

The Mexican striker rose at the far post to head home Antonio Valencia’s perfect cross to seal the victory that keeps Chelsea and Arsenal at arms length.

It was nothing less than United deserved after dominating for large periods but coming up against a superb Everton defence marshalled by Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin.

Indeed, it could have been worse had either of two reasonable penalty shouts been given for the away side.

Sir Alex Ferguson, back in the dugout after a five-game ban, made five changes to the side that drew at Newcastle in midweek.

Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs were all rested with the Champions League semi-final at Schalke 04 looming on Tuesday.

There were few clear-cut chances in an otherwise entertaining opening half hour.

Nani wasted the best opportunity when Wayne Rooney found the Portuguese winger in the box, he greedily cut inside and shot straight at Tim Howard from a tight angle with Rooney and Hernandez waiting for a cutback.

But Everton had to survive a storm going into the break. United created a glorious opportunity in the 31st minute when Rooney’s long range was deflected into the path of Hernandez, whose first time strike from 15 yards was parried away by Howard.

Rooney and Hernandez brought saves from Howard while, on a rare foray, Everton had a penalty appeal turned away five minutes later when Jermaine Beckford went down in a challenge with Jonny Evans.

Nani wasted another golden chance for United when Valencia outmuscled Leighton Baines and laid the perfect pass into the path of Nani, who with the goal at his mercy, hit the ball against Hernandez, who had slipped over in the six-yard box.

Everton made a double substitution at half-time and almost got an instant reward when Victor Anichebe battle his way past Rio Ferdinand and into the box before, going down as the England defender scrambled back but again referee Peter Walton waved away penalty appeals.

And in the 65th minute, Edwin van der Sar had to be at his best to tip away a fierce 20-yard strike from apparent United target Jack Rodwell.

At the other end, United were struggling to break down the stubborn Everton defending but hit the post with a scuffed Michael Owen shot from Fabio’s near post cross while Howard saved well from a Rooney free-kick and Hernandez header.

But with six minutes to go, United grabbed the winner when Distin fluffed his clearance and when the ball reached Valencia, the winger picked out Hernandez to head home at the far post.

FIVE reasons for Tottenham fans to be optimistic

It’s been a mixed bag for Tottenham so far this season. They could have easily battered Manchester City on the opening day, but failed to get the win, they had a horror show in Switzerland before rescuing the tie, and then there was the loss to a wounded Wigan team at White Hart Lane. It’s not all gone quite to plan, but there are still plenty of reasons for the Spurs faithful to stay positive. Here are five of them:

1. Players have yet to hit form

The likes of Wilson Palacios and Aaron Lennon played some of their best football during last season, but so far this term, their engines have stuttered and they have yet to get into top gear. While not totally reliant on either player, they are important to the team and Spurs are a far better outfit when they are fully functioning. Likewise Jermaine Defoe, who has been carrying a groin injury and is having problems finding the back of the net in the white of Tottenham (while being devastating in the white of his country).

2. They are still adapting to the Champions League

Tuesday’s result away in Bremen was a decent point, and given the option before the game, Redknapp probably would have taken it. But the way in which they tore their opponents to pieces in the first half, really should have led to a healthier lead, and ultimately the win. As soon as they conceded, they looked drained and devoid of all the zip and verve that was battering Bremen early on. The weekend’s fixture against Newcastle will help determine how they are coping with the juggling act of all the competitions. It is still a learning curve, and so far there has been more good than bad.

3. This is the best squad of recent memory

It is more the balance of quality, as well as quantity. It may not be that of Chelsea, or Man United, but it is not far off. The arrival of Rafael Van der Vaart was canny, and William Gallas is a proven Premiership performer, regardless of any of the baggage that he lugs on those sulking shoulders. Even with injuries to the likes of Dawson, Defoe, Modric and King, they have still managed to field good sides. When everyone is fit and firing, Redknapp will have some serious decisions to make over who makes the cut, but as the cliché goes; it is a good problem to have.

4. Healthy relationships and structure

Villa have had their managerial problems, and fans are still sceptical of the new appointment of Gerrard Houllier. Roberto Mancini is under colossal pressure from the outset, while Liverpool have spiralling debts and no prospective buyer. Spurs seem to have a healthy structure in place, are financially stable, and their manager has a good relationship with his executives. Everything is seemingly in place for progression, as long as they can sort out their new stadium and the red tape involved.

5. Quite simply – Gareth Bale

If there is a more exciting player in the Premier League at the moment, I haven’t seen them. Adam Johnson has been impressive, Michael Essien is a welcome return, and Andy Carroll is causing problems, but none compare to the Welsh winger. At the moment, he is killing defenders. Playing a role in seven of Spurs’ first eight goals of the season, he has embarrassed opponents along the way. His strike against Stoke is arguabley the goal of the season so far. With this devastating aura that he has at the moment, Spurs are always likely to create goals. In a team of good players, he is still head and shoulders above anything around or against him.

Liverpool issue apology

Liverpool have released a statement apologising to Oldham defender Tom Adeyemi, after he was racially abused by an Anfield fan in Friday night’s FA Cup tie.

The 20-year-old was visibly upset by a supposedly racial slur from one of the Merseyside fans, who was later arrested by police.

The incident follows Luis Suarez’s eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra, and Kenny Dalglish’s men have issued an apology Adeyemi.

“Whatever the outcome of what is now a police investigation, all of us are deeply sorry for what happened on Friday night and our players and our club pass on our sincere regrets to Tom Adeyemi for the upset and distress he suffered as a result of the matter at hand,” the statement reads.

“Our supporters are renowned throughout the world for their outstanding commitment, passion and fairness.

“They are drawn from nationalities across the globe with widely diverse backgrounds and heritages.

“The actions of any one individual do not represent our fans. Their stance on these issues is just as resolute as the club’s.

“We have a very clearly stated public stance on discrimination and intolerance with dedicated staff that work hard daily on programs in this important area.

“Regarding the incident that occurred on Friday evening, we have given Merseyside police every possible assistance we can and will continue to provide the necessary support to their investigation in order to ensure this particular incident is dealt with properly.

“We will continue to take the strongest possible action against unacceptable behaviour during our matches,” it concluded.

Meanwhile, local police have confirmed that the supporter accused of the insult has been bailed after questioning.

Europa League wrap: Portuguese dominate semis line-up

FC Porto have eased into the Europa League semi-finals after crushing Spartak Moscow 10-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.After taking out the first clash in Lisbon 5-1, the Portugese outfit continued their romp in the return fixture, winning 5-2 in the Russian capital.

Porto got off to a flying start thanks to three unanswered goals from Hulk, Cristian Rodriguez and Fredy Guarin in the first hour.

Artem Dzjuba scored on the other end for Spartak before a headed effort from Colombian Radamel Falcao restored Porto’s three goal cushion.

Ferreire Ari responded with Spartak’s second of the night, but Ruben Micael had the final say as he rounded off the scoring and the resounding victory for the recently-crowned Liga Sagres champions.

Awaiting them at the next stage will be Villarreal, who are the only non-Portuguese side to reach the semi-finals.

The Spaniards resoundingly defeated Dutch champions FC Twente 8-2 on aggregate following a 3-1 win in the second leg in Holland.

Emir Bajrami’s 32nd minute opener had Twente in with a chance of getting themselves back into the tie, but Dwight Tiendalli’s dismissal just before the hour mark signalled the end for Michel Preud’homme’s side.

Villarreal capitalised almost immediately on their advantage, with Giuseppe Rossi, Marco Ruben and Cani all scoring in the final half hour to seal a comfortable win.

Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven crashed out of the competition after their 2-2 draw against Benfica was not enough to overcome a 4-1 deficit from the first leg.

Goals to Balazs Dzsudzsak and Jeremain Lens within eight first-half minutes and PSV had moved within striking distance, but a goal from Luisao deep into first-half injury time and a penalty from Oscar Cardozo 18 minutes after the interval put an end to the Dutch comeback.

Benfica’s semi-finals opponents will be fellow Liga Sagres outfit Braga, whose 0-0 draw at home to Dynamo Kiev saw them through to the last four on away goals following their 1-1 tie in Ukraine last week.

Both sides finished the second leg with 10 men, with Braga’s Paulo Cesar and Dynamo’s Goran Popov both receiving their marching orders.

Anelka’s words typify the lack of control

France’s World Cup campaign was certainly a calamitous one, Nicolas Anelka sent home after an argument with then manager Raymond Domenech and the subsequent revolt left any distant dream of glory in tatters but the most recent story to materialise from the French Football Federation is perhaps even more staggering.

The 18 match International ban handed to Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka holds little point to it and is one which he is right to ridicule.

After all, Anelka himself admitted when he exited South Africa his international career was over for the shouting, and it seems the French Football Association have took action simply to try to assert their authority after player power reared its ugly head.

The peace in which Laurent Blanc needs to conduct a new era dictates such confounding chastisement but surely the new manager would rest easier knowing a player of Anelka’s ilk and quality was in his squad.

For Anelka has flourished at Chelsea, his work-rate on and off the ball has coincided perfectly with his selfless play and a career that was once described as nomadic should now be presented more favourably.

Anelka said: “This whole thing is nonsense, to turn the page because [new coach] Laurent Blanc needs to be able to work in peace. These people are clowns. I’m dying with laughter. The whole commission thing is a charade not to lose face.” And he may well have a chuckle, as the only team that will benefit from this is Chelsea.

He will again be a central figure in Chelsea’s hopes of retaining the Premier League and without the burden of International football the enigmatic Frenchmen may even equal his impressive goal tally last term.

Carlo Ancelotti has been good to Anelka during his time at Chelsea and the boss at the Bridge may well be repaid as his number 39 looks to replicate the form which has silenced those who one doubted him for what he is, a world-class centre forward.

Wenger and Villas-Boas to tempt Ivorian with bid

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is bracing himself for big money offers for holding midfielder Cheick Tiote in January according to the Daily Mail.

London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are both interested in the Ivorian international who has been on the sidelines for two months with injury. Although only a big money offer would interest the North East club, Pardew has failed to rule out the sale of their prized midfielder.

Arsenal are looking to replace the departed Cesc Fabregas still and the Champions League football could attract Tiote to the Emirates, however Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is also interested and could build his new look midfield around the player who will return to first team action against Swansea on Saturday.

The club are no doubt in a better position both on and off the pitch than they were this time last year and so the need for a big name departure is less, but a big money deal could interest Mike Ashley.

Pardew said: ‘You never know with the window — it’s such a minefield of possibilities. I think I’ve learned from the Andy Carroll situation and outside of Manchester City, every club has a player that is vulnerable.

“We have one or two players here that top clubs, I’m sure, would be interested in.

“The one thing I would say is that they will have to pay a lot of money to take anyone out of here because we’re in a good position — not just on the playing side but financially.”
