Wellington finish slow first day with the upper hand

New Zealand’s one-day king Chris Harris looked like stealing Wellington’s thunder during his innings of 70 in Canterbury’s State Championship match at Rangiora’s Dudley Park today.Scoring was always going to be slow after all the rain thrown at the country venue last week, but the Canterbury top order, Michael Papps apart, failed to come to grips with the slow pace of the pitch and it was left to Harris to resurrect the innings in his own inimitable fashion.Launching into anything in a reasonable position to be hit after coming to the wicket with Canterbury 59/3, he helped Papps advance the score to 110 before Papps, who had scored 50 off 133 balls, was out second ball after the afternoon drinks break when tickling a ball down the leg-side to wicket-keeper Chris Nevin.Seven runs later Aaron Redmond was out, caught low in the gully by Grant Donaldson for one.But after sharing a 58-run stand with Gareth Hopkins, Harris was beaten by the second new ball when also caught in the gully by Donaldson from Andrew Penn’s bowling. It was a shame for himself and for Canterbury, given his level of run scoring history at the ground. His sheer positiveness was a lesson to all other batsmen. He had four sixes and 44 runs before he hit his first four, and he also worked the singles to advance Canterbury’s score. No sooner was he out than Hopkins departed in the next over, bowled by James Franklin for 14 leaving Canterbury 175/7.Warren Wisneski and Stephen Cunis carried the score through to 187 before the rain came.Papps had earlier shown the benefits to be had from using his feet. He batted sensibly and positively to look to work the Wellington bowlers around the pitch before launching into some lovely straight drives. Once settled he started to play shots square of the wicket and he will still be lamenting his choice of shot to a ball he could well have left alone.Wellington’s bowlers were always in the best position to frustrate the batsmen. Accuracy was always going to frustrate them and at one stage during the first session runs were falling behind the number of overs bowled.Penn’s first 10 overs cost only six runs and even by the day’s end he had two for 20 from 19 overs. But the most effective of the bowlers was Franklin who had a productive spell to start the day when finally gaining Brad Doody’s wicket after a lengthy probing spell, and then immediately after lunch he had Gary Stead out leg before wicket. When the new ball was taken it was Franklin who had Hopkins also leg before wicket. He gained swing and while not bowling at express pace there were few chances for batsmen to lessen their concentration against him.Ash Turner gained his maiden first-class wicket when dismissing Redmond while Matthew Walker, who had a long spell of 18 overs and ended with one for 40.The only wicketless bowler was off-spinner Jeetan Patel. His influence on this match is not completed yet. He looks capable of having more of an impact with more wear on the pitch. There was a noticeable loop to his bowling and when getting conditions to suit, he has all the potential to cause genuine problems for batsmen.Wellington are in the box seat after the first day, and another encouraging aspect of their day had to be the briskness of their over-rate. This hasn’t always been a virtue for Wellington teams but had the game gone the full distance there was every chance they would have fallen within the required guidelines. However, once the Canterbury tail is eliminated tomorrow, the real challenge is ahead for the Wellington batsmen who, after watching the Cantabrians struggle, know they are in for a real battle to gain the first innings ascendancy.

Al-Amin Hossain in line for ODI return

Bangladesh’s national selectors have asked Al-Amin Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Soumya Sarkar, Liton Das, Kamrul Islam Rabbi and Jubair Hossain to return from the A-team’s tour of Africa, in order to prepare for the senior team’s home series against Zimbabwe next month. Bangladesh A begin officially begin their tour of Zimbabwe on October 30.The five players who will replace the returning six from the Bangladesh A team are batsmen Tasamul Haque and Naeem Islam, wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan, and pace bowlers Dewan Sabbir and Mukhtar Ali.Should Al-Amin be picked in the ODI squad for the Zimbabwe series, it will mark a return for him to the national fold for the first time since the 2015 World Cup. Al-Amin was sent home from the World Cup due to disciplinary reasons, and was subsequently ignored for the three home series against Pakistan, India and South Africa.Al-Amin, Sabbir, Soumya, Liton, Rabbi and Jubair will all return to Bangladesh after the A-team’s second and last warm-up fixture in South Africa, on October 29. While Sabbir, Soumya, Liton and Jubair were in Bangladesh’s last ODI squad in July against South Africa, the selectors are considering Al-Amin and Rabbi to replace the injured Rubel Hossain, who is all but ruled out of the Zimbabwe series after suffering a calf muscle strain last month. It is, however, likely that Taskin Ahmed and limited-overs captain Mashrafe Mortaza will return for the Zimbabwe series after recovering from injuries. Taskin suffered a side strain in June during the India series, and had a relapse during the A-team’s tour of India in September.Mashrafe was also hospitalised earlier this month with dengue. While Mashrafe has taken time to recover from the illness, Bangladesh’s team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said that both he and Taskin were likely to be fit in time for the Zimbabwe series, with Mashrafe expected to start training from Monday.Shakib Al Hasan too is likely to be part of the ODI squad though he is currently in USA on paternity leave. Shakib was given leave till mid-November on the condition that he return on the wake of fresh international commitments. There are unlikely to be any other changes in the Bangladesh team as the selectors are inclined to continue with more or less the same squad that beat South Africa 2-1 in July.Bangladesh A squad for the tour of Zimbabwe: Shuvagata Hom (captain), Shadman Islam, Rony Talukdar, Dewan Sabbir, Tasamul Haque, Nurul Hasan, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Mahmudul Hasan, Mohammad Mithun, Naeem Islam, Mohammed Shahid, Muktar Ali, Abu Jayed, Saqlain Sajib, Taijul Islam

Carlos Tevez Brazil linked played down

Brazilian side Corinthians have denied rumours they are preparing a summer bid for Manchester City star Carlos Tevez.

The former Manchester United and West Ham forward has scored 72 goals in 139 appearances for City since his arrival in 2009, helping them lift the Premier League and the FA Cup.

However, he has also endured some turbulent moments in a blue shirt, most notably when he spent six months in limbo after a bust-up with boss Roberto Mancini during a Champions League game at Bayern Munich.

Tevez has also been vocal in the past over his struggles to settle in England and his desire to move closer to Argentina, sparking rumours of a move to a host of top South American clubs.

Despite those reports City officials revealed in March that they would like to extend Tevez’s contract, which has 18 months to run.

World Club Cup champions Corinthians, where Tevez enjoyed a two-year spell earlier in his career, emerged this week as a possible destination for the 29-year-old, with a summer bid mooted.

When quizzed on the rumours the club’s director of football, Edu Gaspar, says they are not planning on buying Tevez – or any striker for that matter – any time soon.

“At this moment we have no interest in Tevez, we’ll sign players for the positions we need,” he told Terra. “We don’t seek a player because he is or might become important. If we need a player and we see that is someone who we need, we go after him. We will fight to sign him.”

Manchester City closing in on Spanish deal

Manchester City are closing in on the signature of Athletic Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente, according to The Sun.

The Spain international has impressed at San Mames over the last couple of seasons, and has been an integral man for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this term, scoring 23 goals.

With a raft of European giants circling around the Basque club’s talisman, Roberto Mancini’s side are thought to have taken the initiative in the race for the powerful striker.

City are believed to have bid £30million for Llorente, and are set to offer the Spaniard £200,000-a-week wages, which many of the attacker’s suitors may not be able to match.

Spurs were courting the forward last summer, but are believed to now prefer to try and make Emmanuel Adebayor’s move to White Hart Lane permanent, rather than re-entering the race to sign Llorente.

Cesc Fabregas: The never-ending transfer saga

It has arguably been the most talked about transfer story of the last two seasons. And quite frankly, it’s getting a bit boring!

Speculation about the future of Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has been the main talking point of the summer so far. Last summer he was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, but after several intense bidding wars, he stayed at the Emirates for another season in the hope that the club would end their trophy drought. But now, with another unsuccessful season over and done with and with a new board in place at the club, Fabregas’ departure from the Emirates may finally occur in the next couple of weeks.

First of all, it has become very clear that Fabregas does not want to stay at Arsenal. Since he joined the club as a 16-year old in 2003, he has slowly developed and matured to become one of the most exciting young midfielders in the world. He has arguably been the best player in the Gunners squad in the last five seasons. Yet the only piece of silverware he has won in that time was the FA Cup back in 2005 and it has now got to the point where Arsenal are miles behind Manchester United and Chelsea in terms of quality and success. Therefore why would Fabregas want to stay? He will no doubt feel that his talents are simply going to waste. and his style of play would be better suited at Barcelona. Having been a former trainee at the Nou Camp, he will feel that it is now time for him to return to the club that loves and finally achieve the success that his abilities deserve.

Since this story started, Arsene Wenger and the board have been very stubborn and advised Barca that Fabregas was not for sale at any price. But now that the club’s circumstances have changed following the takeover by Stan Kroenke, the club has had to reconsider their position and accept the fact that their star midfielder may not be at the club much longer. Compared to the teams that finished above them, the club’s financial situation is in a very poor state and the club simply have not got the finances to spend money on big players. Whilst Manchester United have spent nearly £35 million on two players alone, Arsenal’s only acquisition this summer thus far is Carl Jenkinson from Charlton Athletic – for £1m. If Barca do eventually match the asking price of £40m for the Spaniard, that money could go along way to helping the club invest in new players, which they desperately need to do in order to compete for the title.

If Fabregas were to leave Arsenal, it would leave a huge hole in the first team. But it could also be a blessing in disguise. Over the last couple of seasons, Fabregas has been prone to injury and has had to endure several months on the sidelines. During his absences, the club witnessed the emergence of Jack Wilshere and the hugely influential performances of Samir Nasri. These two players proved to be more than adequate replacements to Fabregas in Arsenal’s midfield last season and they also proved that the club do not necessarily need Fabregas to help the team win. Also, no club wants to dish out thousands of pounds a week on a player who is constantly injured. With all of this in mind, selling Fabregas for £40m could be a very sensible decision.

All that Arsenal would need to do is learn by the examples set by Manchester United and Liverpool when they sold their star players. Both clubs have learnt to adapt to losing Christiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres respectively, and they have done so with very positive results. Provided Arsenal invest in the right players during the transfer window, they could very easily fill the hole that the Spaniard would leave.

Should things go according to plan, Fabregas will get his dream move to the club that he loves and Arsenal will receive a huge cash injection: A potential win-win situation. This transfer saga may be about to reach the conclusion we were all expecting, but it may have come at just the right time.

Joe Hart still believes in title chances

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has maintained that his side can still win the Premier League title.

The Etihad Stadium outfit have had a blip in form and are now five points behind leaders Manchester United, but the England international is refusing to give up just yet and wants a win against Wolves this weekend.

“There is no point in us turning up on Sunday if the title race is over,” he told Sky Sports.

“We’ve still got to believe, we’ve still got to fight for every single point available.

“I don’t think Roberto Mancini means that the season is over. I think he is just trying to play it down a little bit and let us get on with what we need to do. There is no way any of us would give up until it is mathematically impossible.

“I know three of them definitely can be overturned – that is in our hands.

“Other than that, we’ve got to rely on other teams. We can only battle away and try and win every game and hope that United slip up,” he concluded.

Glasgow Rangers have reportedly thrashed out a deal to sign Israeli striker, Toner Hemed.

The player’s representatives has apparently agreed personal terms with the club and the Maccabi Haifa star will fly into Glasgow to undergo a medical ahead of a free transfer to the Scottish giants in the next few days.

Hemed, who recently made his debut for the Israel national team in the recent Euro qualifier against Latvia, is keen to work for McCoist who he describes as one of the “great strikers in football.”

“I am excited by the prospect of signing for such a big club as Rangers and playing under a manager like Ally McCoist,” Hemed told the Daily Record.

“He is someone I very much admired in the past as one of the great strikers in football.

“I believe if I got the chance to work with him he can develop my game further.”

Phil Bardsley pens new Sunderland deal

Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley has signed a new long-term contract that will keep him with Steve Bruce's team until the end of the 2013-14 campaign.

The 25-year-old Scotland international's previous deal was due to expire at the end of this season but he has produced some of the best performances of his career this term.

Bruce said:"Obviously there's a decision myself and the board have had to make and, to be fair to Phil, he's done very, very well.

"The last thing we wanted to do was to let Phil run into a Bosman situation. He has played his part, he is a valuable member of the squad and he has been rewarded for that."

Bardsley added:"I'm delighted to be able to stay. Talks have been ongoing over the last couple of weeks and I'm really pleased to be here for the next three-and-a-half years.

"It's a club which I enjoy being at, I love living up here, the lads and everything about being here. Being part of the manager's plans is great and I'm enjoying my football."

The only way to stand out from the crowd

Footballers are never people to shy away from the limelight, as they’re more than happy to have all the attention on them. From ridiculous haircuts to striking tattoos, as long as the crowd are looking at them, then they’ve got all the ammunition they need to go about wowing their supporters. Over the last decade or so, the easiest way to draw the attention of everyone in the crowd is with garish, eye-catching football boots.

It is all about making your boots you own, which is what you can do with the Converse Demin Collection…

Long gone are the days when having black football boots was the norm. In fact, black boots was all you could previously get, but now you’re seen to be a little bit boring, a middle of the road type character, if you don’t have the most colourful boots around.

Having colourful boots marks you out as being a flair player, or at least someone who has a lot of belief in their ability, a big ego if you like. It also marks you out to the opposition as someone who thinks they’re God on the pitch and as a result you can expect a few tasty tackles now and again.

Football boots don’t come much more colourful than the ones that current Sunderland and ex-Arsenal strike Nicklas Bendtner used to wear. His pink boots became infamous and his ability certainly didn’t match up to the boots. However, they did go to a good cause as he raised funds for a Danish cancer foundation by selling them on eBay.

More recently Tottenham left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto has gained notoriety, not necessarily for the colour of his boots, but for the fact that he wore odd boots that didn’t match. Was he doing this to be different? Did he want to stand out from the crowd?

No, it was simply a practical reason as he explained to Mirror Football: “I bought two pairs – one blue and one white. After three days, one of them split; and because I don’t have a sponsor, I wasn’t going to throw away a shoe that is brand new. So I took one of the other colour and played like that.”
