AFC to meet over Bin Hammam ban

The Asian Football Confederation must undertake presidential elections after Mohamed Bin Hammam’s life ban, Japan’s football chief said.Japan Football Association president Junji Ogura said the ban issued to former AFC boss Bin Hammam meant a vote was required, despite the caretaker presidency falling the way of China’s Zhang Jilong.

Bin Hammam was banned for life for being implicated in corruption regarding the vote to decide which nation would host the 2022 FIFA World Cup – the event going the way of the then AFC president’s native Qatar.

“(Bin Hammam) has been banned for life so there is a need for elections to be held,” Ogura said.

Meanwhile, Bin Hammam is desperately maintaining his innocence, and is calling for the AFC to postpone any potential elections while he appeals his life ban.

Ogura said the disgraced Qatari had contacted him to inform him of his plan to retain his presidency of the AFC.

“He (Bin Hammam) said he doesn’t think he has done anything wrong and that he has no intention of quitting as either AFC President or FIFA executive,” Ogura said.

The AFC executive is scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss the future presidency.

Brazilian Serie A wrap: Epic wins for Flamengo, Sao Paulo

A Ronaldinho hat-trick has steered Flamengo to a remarkable 5-4 victory over Santos in the Brazilian Serie A on Wednesday.Santos stunned the visitors to lead 3-0 after just 26 minutes at the Estadio Urbano Caldeira, with Borges netting a brace in the opening 16 minutes, before Neymar nabbed his first.

Former AC Milan star Ronaldinho led the charge back for his club, pegging back the first goal in the 28th minute, before Thiago Neves made it 2-3 four minutes later.

Deivid capped up a stunning first half by netting the equaliser on 44 minutes to set up a tantalising second stanza, which lived up to expectations.

Neymar produced a moment of individual brilliance six minutes after the break to restore the hosts’ lead, but that only set the stage for a Ronaldinho masterclass that would ultimately win the game for Flamengo.

The former FIFA World Player of the Year levelled proceedings at 4-4 in the 68th minute, before completing his treble with an 81st minute strike.

The win moved Flamengo into third spot, just four points from the league leading Corinthians, while Santos are level with relegation-placed Bahia, but have two games in hand.

Coritiba could not mirror Flamengo’s mercurial fighting efforts, but they would have lost no supporters in their 4-3 home loss to Sao Paulo.

The visitors at Estadio Major Antonio Couto Pereira led 4-0 after 54 minutes, courtesy of goals to Carlinhos Paraiba, Juan, Dagoberto and Lucas Silva.

They also had the numerical advantage, as Coritiba’s Davi had been shown a red card when his side were trailing 3-0.

But the hosts were not to be denied that easily, as a brace from Bill as well as a Rafinha goal gave Sao Paulo some nervous final moments.

But the visiting side held on, despite also finishing with 10 men after Denilson received a straight red on 90 minutes.

The win helped Sao Paulo stay one point ahead of Flamengo in second place.

Botafogo came from a goal down to beat Avai at home 2-1, a result which keeps the losers second last on the league table.

A Felipe brace helped Atletico GO beat Cruzeiro 2-0 at home, with the victors leaping one point clear of the drop zone accordingly.

Palmeiras and Atletico Mineiro racked up 1-0 wins over Figueirense and Fluminense respectively, while Gremio were kept to a 1-1 home draw by Atletico Mineiro.

WAG War: Magpies do battle at the Stadium of Light

The fortunes of Newcastle and Sunderland have certainly been mixed throughout the Premier League years.

While the Magpies have enjoyed title challenges, Champions League football; they have also had the indignity of dropping out of the Premier League back in 2009 much to the amusement of their local rivals. The Mackems themselves are no strangers to relegation and have been something of a yoyo club throughout the Premier League years; however you do sense that times are changing at the Stadium of Light and Steve Bruce is building a strong squad that is more than capable of holding its own among the upper echelons of the league.

This lunchtime sees the first Tyne & Wear derby of the season, and while the pundits and media will be focusing on whether Sunderland can overcome Newcastle on their own doorstep, we will focus on the major battle set to take place in the player’s lounge at the Stadium of Light.

In the first part of our new series of ‘Wag War’ we look ahead to the likely battle at the Stadium of Light today and ask you the viewer to decide which team wins this epic battle.

Giggs not scared of Barcelona

Ryan Giggs has maintained that he is not scared of European champions Barcelona, and believes Manchester United can beat the Spaniards should they face each other again this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side have beaten the Old Trafford outfit in the Champions League final in two of the last three seasons, but despite this the Welshman is feeling upbeat.

“It’s difficult, as they’re such a good team, but it’s not impossible. Teams have beaten them, and we beat them three years ago when they were not too different back then,” he told MUTV.

“What they’ve got now is more experience and confidence from winning things that they didn’t have back then. We’ve got to overcome that if we come up against them again. We’ll be confident we can beat them if we do.

“We’ve got to learn from our mistakes and get better. I’m sure we can, with the players we have here and the hunger to win things.”

Barcelona beat United 3-1 in the final at Wembley last season, but Giggs has put the result into perspective given The Reds’ success domestically.

“I think everyone was disappointed about the Champions League final. The manager did a great job putting things into perspective as United fans wanted the 19th title so much.

“There are people who grew up, similar to myself, and who are older, who thought we’d never surpass Liverpool. So it was a mixture of the disappointment of the Champions League final but also savouring what was a great achievement in being able to catch Liverpool and overtake them in such a short space of time.

“Everyone was gutted about the Barcelona game, but it is a great achievement to surpass a record that, 20 years ago, no-one would ever have foreseen,” he concluded.

Giggs is in line for a start against Benfica at the Estadio da Luz on Wednesday night, as United start their Champions League group stages with an away fixture in Portugal.

Barcelona set to join Tottenham in transfer pursuit

Barcelona are lining up a shock move to bring Bolton defender Gary Cahill to the Nou Camp in January, according to the Daily Mail.

Manager Pep Guardiola is keen to strengthen his defensive options and has taken a shining to Cahill after his consistent performances over the last two years.

The 25-year-old is now a regular in the England setup and was the subject of intense transfer speculation over the summer with Arsenal and Tottenham chasing his signature.

Both failed with £10 million bids as the Trotters stood firm over their valuation but they would be hard-pressed to deny Cahill a move to the European champions.

However, with his current deal at the Reebok Stadium running out at the end of the season, Cahill would be free to discuss a move with other clubs and the La Liga giants are considering bringing him in to strengthen their back line.

Injury to skipper Carlos Puyol has forced Guardiola to partner midfielders Sergio Busquets or Javier Mascherano with Gerard Pique in the heart of defence.

The Spanish coach is concerned that his team will be vulnerable at set pieces without a defender who is dominant in the air and has identified Cahill to provide some aerial strength.

Owen Coyle will face a monumental task to try and keep him if Barcelona formally indicate their interest, with Cahill desperate to cement his position as an England starter.

Rio told to stay at Manchester United

David Beckham has stated that he hopes Rio Ferdinand stays at Manchester United, despite rumours the veteran could be set for a move to the MLS.

The centre half has lost a place in the national squad, and with persistent injury concerns and the emergence of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at Old Trafford, is no longer guaranteed a starting berth in Sir Alex Ferguson’s starting XI.

Rumours in the press state that Chicago Fire are keen to offer the ageing defender one last bumper payday, but Beckham feels Ferdinand should stay with the Premier League champions.

“It’s unfair for me to even comment on a player that’s under contract at Manchester United, loved by the fans. He’s a very good player,” he told The Daily Mail.

“That’s the first time I’ve heard those rumours but I’m not even going to comment because he’s a Manchester United player and as a [former] Manchester United player I want him to stay there,” he stated.

Beckham’s own future has been subject to speculation, with a move to big spending Paris St Germain of interest to the LA Galaxy man.

“I love Leonardo. He’s a great manager, a great person. I’m flattered that he wants me to go and join the team in Paris.

“I think there are big things happening in France at a number of clubs. It’s an exciting time. Leonardo going there and the money that’s at the club. It’s an interesting club,” he concluded.

Bale wants Wales to continue Speed’s work

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has heralded Gary Speed after the manager’s death, and has vowed that the Wales side will continue the work he started.

The former Newcastle and Everton midfielder was found dead in his Cheshire home at the weekend, with sources confirming that he took his own life.

Bale was part of Speed’s Wales team that has won four of their last five games, and the 2010/11 PFA Player of the Year wants the good form to continue in the departed coach’s honour.

“It was a massive shock, I don’t think anybody ever thought anything like this would happen,” Bale told The Telegraph.

“Everyone is devastated and it is a massive loss to everyone in football. It is a tragedy, everyone still can’t get their head around it and all our condolences go out to his family and his kids. It is a hard time.

“We were on the up, he changed the way we play and the whole mentality of our game. It is a massive loss, but we will try and carry on the best we can in his honour,” he concluded.

Bale is only one of countless players, coaches and officials in the game to herald Speed’s contribution to the sport and offer messages of condolences to his family.

Wenger and Villas-Boas to tempt Ivorian with bid

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is bracing himself for big money offers for holding midfielder Cheick Tiote in January according to the Daily Mail.

London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are both interested in the Ivorian international who has been on the sidelines for two months with injury. Although only a big money offer would interest the North East club, Pardew has failed to rule out the sale of their prized midfielder.

Arsenal are looking to replace the departed Cesc Fabregas still and the Champions League football could attract Tiote to the Emirates, however Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is also interested and could build his new look midfield around the player who will return to first team action against Swansea on Saturday.

The club are no doubt in a better position both on and off the pitch than they were this time last year and so the need for a big name departure is less, but a big money deal could interest Mike Ashley.

Pardew said: ‘You never know with the window — it’s such a minefield of possibilities. I think I’ve learned from the Andy Carroll situation and outside of Manchester City, every club has a player that is vulnerable.

“We have one or two players here that top clubs, I’m sure, would be interested in.

“The one thing I would say is that they will have to pay a lot of money to take anyone out of here because we’re in a good position — not just on the playing side but financially.”

Liverpool issue apology

Liverpool have released a statement apologising to Oldham defender Tom Adeyemi, after he was racially abused by an Anfield fan in Friday night’s FA Cup tie.

The 20-year-old was visibly upset by a supposedly racial slur from one of the Merseyside fans, who was later arrested by police.

The incident follows Luis Suarez’s eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra, and Kenny Dalglish’s men have issued an apology Adeyemi.

“Whatever the outcome of what is now a police investigation, all of us are deeply sorry for what happened on Friday night and our players and our club pass on our sincere regrets to Tom Adeyemi for the upset and distress he suffered as a result of the matter at hand,” the statement reads.

“Our supporters are renowned throughout the world for their outstanding commitment, passion and fairness.

“They are drawn from nationalities across the globe with widely diverse backgrounds and heritages.

“The actions of any one individual do not represent our fans. Their stance on these issues is just as resolute as the club’s.

“We have a very clearly stated public stance on discrimination and intolerance with dedicated staff that work hard daily on programs in this important area.

“Regarding the incident that occurred on Friday evening, we have given Merseyside police every possible assistance we can and will continue to provide the necessary support to their investigation in order to ensure this particular incident is dealt with properly.

“We will continue to take the strongest possible action against unacceptable behaviour during our matches,” it concluded.

Meanwhile, local police have confirmed that the supporter accused of the insult has been bailed after questioning.
