Arsenal eye "fascinating" Eze alternative with £22.5m release clause

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is known for spinning many plates simultaneously when it comes to his transfer plans, and the Italian now has his eyes on more than one attacking midfielder.

Arsenal appear to be lining up their next marquee signing after Viktor Gyokeres’ arrival

After finally sealing a deal for Viktor Gyokeres in a deal worth up to £64 million from Sporting CP, reports have suggested that Arsenal’s next transfer priority is a number 10 to complement club captain Martin Odegaard.

Mikel Arteta’s side are believed to be working on outgoings right now too, with that being a key focus, especially after a summer of expenditure totalling well north of £200 million thus far, but a new creator is still on the agenda.

Arsenal’s links to Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, as has been the case for a month now, are refusing to go away.

There are some suggestions that Eze has already agreed personal terms to join Arsenal (Sport Zone), and while this is yet to be confirmed by reliable media sources, the likes of Fabrizio Romano state that the Gunners are in constant contact with the 27-year-old’s camp.

However, there is no guarantee that Arsenal will agree a deal for Eze, with north London rivals Tottenham also contending for the England international as Palace continue to demand his release clause be paid in full.

Arsenal eye Leicester City star Bilal El Khannouss

According to TBR Football and journalist Graeme Bailey, Berta is now targeting Leicester City playmaker Bilal El Khannouss – who would come as a potential alternative to Eze.

Arsenal are believed to be real fans of El Khannouss, alongside a host of clubs in Europe – RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Monaco, Atalanta and Valencia – alongside Premier League rivals Spurs, Newcastle, Palace, Leeds and West Ham.

The Moroccan is a man in demand, it would seem, with talkSPORT also reporting that El Khannouss’ contract includes a £22.5 million release clause – so he’s up for grabs at a quarter of Eze’s price.

“El Khannouss is a fascinating player,” said Bailey. “Very similar to Rayan Cherki in terms of talent. Many clubs rate him as one of the finest technicians of his generation.”

The 21-year-old, who only signed for Leicester from Genk in 2024, averaged more key passes per 90 in the top flight than any other Foxes player last term (WhoScored), with a fee of just under £23m seeming like a steal.

Leach comes back stronger for England after feeling the love

Support from coach and captain helped spinner rediscover his enjoyment for the game

Jack Leach believes that being dropped by England during their home summer enabled him to fall back in love with cricket, aided by an unexpected phone call from Ben Stokes in the aftermath of a Test win.Leach is the leading wicket-taker in England’s series in Pakistan with 14, but had only played two Tests in the 18 months before the tour and failed to complete either due to back and knee injuries. He had returned to full fitness after knee surgery by the time England picked their first Test of the summer in June, but they selected his Somerset team-mate Shoaib Bashir instead.Bashir earned widespread praise after his match-winning five-wicket haul against West Indies at Trent Bridge, and was preferred throughout the rest of the summer. But when England returned to their Nottingham hotel after that win, Stokes called Leach to tell him that Bashir’s success did not mean he had been forgotten.”I felt really happy and proud,” Leach recalled on Monday, speaking at England’s hotel in Islamabad. “He just wanted to tell me how great I was, basically, in the way that he does, and just recognise how I’ve dealt with the situation. That gave me a chance to say some nice things back to him about what he’d given me, probably going back to 2019 at Headingley.Related

“There’s just a mutual respect there, so it was a nice conversation to have for sure. It just reminded me that I was going about things in the right way, and gave me confidence I still had something to offer the team and I was a part of it, in a small way. That gave me good motivation for the remainder of the summer… a nice reminder that there was still a chance to play.”Leach admitted that he briefly feared that his England career would be over when he initially learned of his omission. “You always do,” he said. “After a long time out with injury, I maybe felt that might be it… I really understood the situation. If you’re not able to stay fit, then other people come in and do well, and Bash certainly did that.”But he was happy with the level of communication from England’s management throughout, and received a similar call from Brendon McCullum the day after speaking to Stokes in July. “I was really happy with that – and in a way, not surprised, because of what I’d experienced when I was there [in the squad],” he said. “I’m very thankful for that, and my relationship with those guys.”After a slow start to the season which saw him take nine wickets at 50.44 in his first four appearances for Somerset, Leach thrived at the end of the year with 36 at 15.86 in five matches. He said that the secret was as simple as “remembering what I’m about, and being happy with that” rather than worrying too much about making minor technical changes.”I just felt like I needed to rediscover that kid-like mentality of why you play the game,” Leach said. “You have that on the journey up to playing for England, that nothing-to-lose mentality. Then it’s like, ‘I’m here now, I want to keep that’. That’s tiring, it’s stressful, it’s not enjoyable… You forget what your main strengths are.”This summer actually provided a really good opportunity to go back to play for Somerset – which is what I always wanted to do as a young boy – and to just simplify everything; just do what I was good at, and build the confidence that actually, that was good enough… I’ve discovered that again: just being myself, and actually really enjoying that.”Leach has outbowled Bashir in England’s first two Tests in Pakistan, but said that reclaiming his status as first-choice spinner is “not important” to him. “That’s not really in my thoughts,” he said. “I just want to keep building on what I’ve done in the summer and what I’m doing out here… For me, it’s all about the team. Maybe I’m at an age where that’s all that really matters to me.”The pair have worked closely together in Pakistan. “He’s just done so well,” Leach said of Bashir. “He’ll just be learning so much, so quickly. He’s quality. We have a good relationship, good fun, and try to work together. I try to help where I can. I don’t want to overload him with stuff: I feel like he’s just learning through playing, and it’s all going to come quite naturally.”The series decider starts on Thursday in Rawalpindi, with another turning pitch in prospect after Pakistan’s 152-run win last week. Two years ago, it was the scene of a famous England win: they racked up 657 in 101 overs in their first innings, and Leach applied the finishing touches when trapping Naseem Shah lbw on the final evening to seal the victory.”That’s probably my favourite wicket: just the pictures of the appeal, and then just after of everyone celebrating,” Leach said. “It was just such a good game to be part of.” England will hope for something similar this week, in their bid for a 2-1 series win.

New Cricket Australia CEO: 'Cricket is changing in front of our very eyes'

Incoming CA CEO Todd Greenberg says cricket has the biggest challenges coming to it of all the domestic sports in Australia

Incoming Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg has warned that cricket faces the greatest headwinds of domestic sports in the country but also has huge opportunities for growth and believes the game remains at the heart of Australian society.Greenberg was appointed as the successor to Nick Hockley earlier this week and will take up the role in March. The current Australian Cricketers’ Association CEO and former CEO of the National Rugby League, Greenberg had long been the front-runner for the job although CA undertook a global search for candidates.Greenberg decided to pursue the CA role when he concluded to himself, via a question on a whiteboard at home, that he could have a greater impact at head office than remaining with the ACA. He made clear he wanted to allow Hockley to complete his tenure without interference, but is well aware he will have a significant inbox of issues – both local and global – when he officially takes the role.Related

Todd Greenberg announced as new Cricket Australia CEO

“I’m a realist,” he said speaking alongside CA chair Mike Baird in Adelaide ahead of the day-night Test against India. “I’d say this to you, and I said exactly the same thing to the board, in my view, in Australian sports, cricket has the biggest challenges coming to it of all the domestic sports, but it also has the greatest opportunity and ambition and to marry those two things together will be the definition of success. There are lots of challenges.”Pressed to expand on a major issue that will be at the forefront, he added: “I think it’s pretty clear that the global system of cricket is changing. Franchise cricket is putting pressure on bilateral cricket, and the way we have known cricket for such a long time in this country is changing in front of our very eyes.”That change can be really good and positive and commercial. We have to get our heads around that. Cricket is not a sport that has traditionally loved change, so we have to embrace that, and that takes leadership [and] it will take some courage, but it will also take us working together. You won’t hear a lot of ‘me’ and ‘I’, you’ll hear a lot of ‘us’, because it takes a village, and it’s going to take an entire cricket village, if we’re going to turn the ship.”Engaging with the fansGreenberg remained adamant that cricket retains a key place in the minds of the Australian public but believes there is work to be done in the relationship between them and Cricket Australia. It was a point also raised by Baird in a recent interview with newspapers where he referenced the resting of key players from the final ODI against Pakistan.”I think that’s got some real improvement to make,” he said. “And I think the improvement starts with just communication. We want to explain the reasons why we might do certain things. And again, that might polarise opinion. Sometimes people might not agree, and that’s okay, but I think it starts from the premise of being really strong communicators, and you’ve got one of the best in the business as the chair, and I’m going to hope to sort of support him on that.”As ever for a CA CEO, there will also be the challenge of maintaining relationships with the state and territory associations which can often bring points of tension.”They’ll always be matters of conflict and there’ll be difficult conversations,” Greenberg said. “But the conversations you resist are the conversations you probably most need to have. So being honest and upfront with people and building relationships. I think we’ve done a good job of that in the game over the last couple of years, but I don’t think that work’s anywhere near finished.”Steve Smith and Pat Cummins look on at training•Mark Brake/Getty Images

An aging men’s Test teamGreenberg also acknowledged there would need to be some tough conversations about how to manage the transition of players in the Test side which currently has just one – Nathan McSweeney – under the age of 30 amid concerns that there could be an exodus of talent in a short space of time that leaves the team exposed.”We do have a more aging side, particularly in red-ball cricket, and that won’t be easy,” he said. “There have to be hard and honest conversations between players and staff, and I think those are happening to be fair. In saying that, though, the professionalism of modern athletes are tending to take them longer in their careers; the way we take care of them, the way we rehab them, the way they take care of themselves. I think it’s a very fine balance. We’ve got an incredibly successful two teams. Our men and women have had an amazing couple of years. Let’s make sure we keep our foot on the gas and continue to support them.”Greenberg was confident that the strong relationship he has built with the players in his four years at the ACA will continue even though he will now need to take an overarching view of sport.”It does bring a different way [of looking at the game],” he said of his new role. “But in saying that, I think one thing I’ve been consistent on over my four years is that, and the message has been delivered to the players, they’re probably sick of me saying it to them, but for them to grow, the game’s got to grow, and we need to go together. The players enjoy a revenue share, which means if the sport grows, they grow with it. And so I’ve been consistent from day one [saying], if the players in the game work together, we can just about achieve anything.”

Better signing than Guessand: Aston Villa ready move to land £43m sensation

Hold the back page! Hold the front page! Oh, and while you’re at it… hold all the ones in the middle as well! Why? Aston Villa have finally signed a player… that’s why!

On Friday morning, the Villans confirmed the arrival of forward Evann Guessand, joining from Nice for a reported fee of £26m plus up to £4.3m in add-ons.

Before that, Unai Emery had only been able to add Marco Bizot and Zépiqueno Redmond on free transfers to his squad; Yasin Özcan has also joined for around £5.8m, but has instantaneously been loaned out to Anderlecht.

Now though, having belatedly got their first serious signing of the summer over the line, could another be right around the corner?

Aston Villa looking to bolster their squad

If all goes to plan, Aston Villa could play as many as 65 matches next season, certainly considered amongst the favourites to feature in next May’s Europa League Final in İstanbul because, well, four-time winner Emery is their manager.

Thus, ahead of a jam-packed schedule, the Claret and Blue Army need to add depth to their ranks and Guessand certainly does that, with Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic noting that Emery appreciates the fact that he is a ‘versatile attacker’, capable of being deployed in multiple roles.

Now, could they bolster their midfield ranks with a familiar face?

Well, according to a report by Football Insider, Aston Villa are interested in re-signing Douglas Luiz from Juventus.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Brazilian only swapped the Midlands for Turin last summer, with la Vecchia Signora paying £42.3m for his signature.

Well, former Juventus player Alessio Tacchinardi believes this move was a “disaster”, given that Luiz has accumulated a miserly 877 minutes in a black and white striped shirt to date, starting just six matches across all competitions.

Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

Thus, the Italian giants are desperate to offload the out-of-favour midfielder, with Filippo Cornacchia of Gazzetta dello Sport noting that a return to the Premier League is his most likely destination, so could he soon call Villa Park home once again?

Why Douglas Luiz's return would be transformational for Aston Villa

During his final season at Villa Park, Luiz was an absolutely pivotal figure in Emery’s team, hence why Juventus were willing to pay such a huge amount to sign him.

Emery himself stated that the Brazilian was “progressing a lot as a midfielder… adding goals”, while Ben Mattinson of Breaking the Lines praised both his ‘duel-winning capacity’ and ‘press resistance’ when on the ball in possession.

So, let’s outline his importance to Villa during the 2023/24 season, a campaign which saw the Claret and Blue Army end up fourth, their highest top division finish since 1996.

As the table documents, Luiz was key to everything Aston Villa did across all competitions and across the entire pitch, ranked in the top four for every metric included, ranging from goals and shots to chances created and all the defensive metrics, namely tackles, ball recoveries, interceptions and more.

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz

Luiz’s nominal replacement Amadou Onana was good if unspectacular last season, but David Michael of BBC Sport believes Villa massively missed the ‘control of midfield’ and ‘set-piece delivery’ that Luiz provided.

Thus, should he return, one would assume the “world-class” Luiz – as noted by Adam Gilks – would immediately do so as a starter, but it’s unclear whether the same can be said for Guessand.

Evann Guessand

Speaking on the Guardian Football Weekly podcast, Lars Sivertsen was not particularly excited about Guessand’s arrival at Villa, labelling him “fine” given that he did not boast an “incredible” goal-scoring record in Ligue 1, forecasting he’ll be little more than a “squad addition”.

Given the performances of Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, with Donyell Malen, Leon Bailey and others vying for minutes in attack too, the Côte d’Ivoire international is unlikely to be thrown in for a debut from the start against Newcastle on the opening weekend.

Luiz though, assuming Villa are able to finalise his potential return quickly, would be a transformational addition to Emery’s first-choice starting lineup, so they should surely take advantage of Juventus’ desperation to cut their losses.

Australia hope Healy can play as a batter in Ashes Test

Georgia Voll could make a Test debut while Beth Mooney will take the keeping gloves

Australia remain hopeful that Alyssa Healy will be fit to feature in the day-night Ashes Test at the MCG, and have named her in a 13-player squad, but it will be as a batter only if she does recover in time.Healy was ruled out of the first T20I at the SCG with a stress reaction in the same foot that she injured at the T20 World Cup. With Healy not keeping Beth Mooney will take the gloves for the Test, which may result in her moving down the order, which would increase the chances of a debut for Georgia Voll.If Healy ultimately did not make the Test, then Tahlia McGrath would again stand in as captain.Related

Allrounder Ashleigh Gardner is expected to recover from her calf strain in time for the Test but is doubtful for the final T20I in Adelaide. Heather Graham has been added to that squad as cover.”We’re pleased with the form of the 13 players that have taken part in the series to date and feel it’s a squad that offers a variety of options when it comes to selecting the makeup of the Test side,” national selector Shawn Flegler said. “Alyssa has been named in the squad as a batter only and we’ll give her as much time as we can to prove her fitness ahead of the match. Ash will continue to be assessed daily… at this stage, she is on track to be available for the Test match.”Mooney’s experience wicketkeeping in longer-form cricket is limited and she is aware it will be a new physical challenge.”I don’t think I’ll be able to walk after if I have to keep but we’re pretty lucky in the Australian team where we’ve got lots of players that can step into different roles,” she said after the first T20I. “But when [Healy’s] been out, I’ve been able to step into that role and got some good feedback along the way, so just happy to do what’s required of the team.”If Voll did debut at the MCG, it would complete a full set across the three formats in less than two months following the start of her ODI career against India and then a T20I debut at the SCG.Beth Mooney on keeping in a Test match: “I don’t think I’ll be able to walk after”•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

“I’m more than happy to try and do a job up the top of the order,” Voll told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday. “I love batting there and batting up the top with Beth Mooney was pretty cool [in Sydney]. I’m more than happy to fit in wherever the team needs.”Megan Schutt has again been named in a Test squad despite often saying her days in the format are over, but the pink-ball day-night element to this game may see her come into consideration for the final XI.The other decision that will need to be made is whether to play both Alana King and Georgia Wareham, who have caused England huge problems in the limited-overs matches. The match will be the first day-night Test at the MCG and the first women’s Test match at the venue since 1948-49.Australia squad for Ashes TestAlyssa Healy (capt), Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney (wk), Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Voll, Georgia Wareham
