Aiden Markram won’t say it quite yet, but in spite of the bottleneck of top-order batters in South Africa’s T20I squad, he is fairly sure of his place to Australia for the World Cup. And you would think he should be.Markram is ranked third on the ICC’s T20I batting rankings, averages 42.60 in T20Is, strikes at 146.55 and contributes with part time offspin. But he has only played one of South Africa’s eight T20Is this year, missed the series against India after contracting Covid-19 and was benched for two of the three games against England in favour of Heinrich Klaasen. So if he was feeling uncertain, it would be understandable. Luckily for him, South Africa have a plan and it almost certainly includes him.”The communication has been really good from coach, management team and captain. It makes it easier to understand why they are doing it (rotating players). Building up to World Cups you want to pick your best squad and it’s important to give guys fair opportunities before you select the team,” Markram said ahead of South Africa’s two-match T20I series against Ireland, which starts on Wednesday in Bristol.Although South Africa don’t have many matches left to experiment before the T20 World Cup (their two against Ireland are followed by three in India just before the tournament), they have tinkered with the top order in the absence of captain Temba Bavuma. They started off the England series giving Klaasen an opportunity at No. 4, but even though he is capable of hitting the ball hard, Klaasen may have had his run with scores of 20 and 19 against England. Markram replaced Klaasen for the third game and hit an unbeaten 51 in the deciding match.Who bats above Markram is yet to be fully decided. Quinton de Kock will get in on reputation, if not current form, and Reeza Hendricks has done everything asked of him to open the batting with de Kock with three successive half-centuries against England. But if Bavuma is fit, that means either Hendricks is squeezed out or moved down the order, where Rilee Rossouw returned to the national set-up with an unbeaten 96 in the second match against England. If Rossouw moves down, that impedes on Markram and possibly further down where David Miller and Tristan Stubbs make up the middle order. It’s a problem of plenty, which South Africa may not yet know how to solve apart from Markram, who can see a clear role for himself in that mix.”Rilee, Tristan and Reeza are exciting for us as a team and creates some good competition for us as a squad. For me, it’s just about playing the situation. If they get us off to a flier, it’s about coming in and matching their intensity. And if not, it’s for me to up the intensity,” he said.”I would still love to be involved in all three formats and will put as much work as I can to try and keep that dream of playing in all three formats alive”•Getty Images
Energy in the middle order is where South Africa’s squad has seen its biggest change from the team they were a year or two ago. Rather than rely on one player to finish an innings – Miller historically – they now have Markram, Stubbs, Miller and Andile Phehlukwayo with Stubbs adding a new dynamic to the squad. “It’s exciting for us to have a player with his x-factor ability,” Markram said. “He (Stubbs) is on cloud nine now and it’s about staying there and enjoying every second. He is a bit of a free spirit and has always got a smile on his face.”The hype around Stubbs may remind some of the same hope Markram brought with him after South Africa won the 2014 Under-19 World Cup and he was promoted to senior international cricket three years later. Markram said he “hasn’t quite got it worked out,” how to manage those expectations but his advice to Stubbs is that since “it’s been an awesome six months for him, the longer he can drag that out, the more awesome things will come for him.”That’s how Markram has played since the IPL, where he had a “decent bit, not amazing” tournament for Sunrisers Hyderabad, with three fifties in his 13 innings. “Confidence is a massive part of this game. This IPL tournament provided me with that confidence, that belief that I was lacking [earlier],” Markram said. While Markram may be fairly sure of himself in T20Is, he can’t be quite as assured in other formats because “I can appreciate that I might have not scored as many runs as I should have.” Specifically, his role as a Test player will come into sharp focus later this month, when South Africa play England for three games, starting on August 17.Markram has been included in the squad, after missing the series against Bangladesh because of the IPL and following a particularly poor run. Before that, Markram had gone 13 Test innings with only one half-century and an average of 16.38. He has since been replaced by Sarel Erwee as Dean Elgar’s opening partner, and does not think he will find his way back into the XI anytime soon. “I am not even expecting to play to be honest,” he said. “If you look at the makeup of the top three, they’ve done really well over the past few series. I’m over the moon for the three of them.”Asked if he could consider moving down the order in the longest format, as he has done in shorter ones, Markram said, “it’s something I would be open to,” but that South Africa haven’t had any planning around that yet. “We haven’t had too many discussions with regards to red-ball cricket. That will be next week,” he said. “I’ve only ever done top of the order stuff but it’s something I would be open to. If there is a role to fill in the middle order and the coaches and selectors think there is a space for me, I would be open to trying it and I would have to prepare accordingly. And make those slight mental adjustments.”Wherever, or perhaps whether, he finds himself in the line-up, Markram remains committed across longer and shorter formats even as an increasing number of players find themselves choosing between them. “I would still love to be involved in all three formats and will put as much work as I can to try and keep that dream of playing in all three formats alive.”

Chelsea are set to hold talks over Alejandro Garnacho this week, according to Telegraph journalist Matt Law, and it is believed they’re weighing up Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens or Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel as alternatives.
Garnacho is valued at around £50 million by Man United, so it won’t be an easy deal to pull off, and the Argentine is also attracting serious interest from Napoli.

Amidst their pursuit of a winger, there is also the matter of Chelsea’s search for a striker to complement Nicolas Jackson, which is made all the more imperative for Stamford Bridge officials by the Frenchman’s potential switch to Bayern Munich.
Chelsea have a number of high-profile striker targets on their agenda – including reported Arsenal targets in Wolves star Matheus Cunha and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko – after deciding to push forward their plans to bring in a new number nine for the winter rather than later this year (Simon Phillips).
Going back to their wide-attacking targets, reports in Spain have recently shed light on Chelsea bids for Deportivo La Coruna sensation Yeremay Hernandez.
The 22-year-old has bagged eight goals and three assists for Deportivo in the Spanish Segunda division this season, leading to serious interest from elite clubs, and Chelsea are among his admirers.

Chelsea have made offers to sign Hernandez already this month, which have all been rejected by Deportivo, and reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has lifted the lid on yet another approach.
Chelsea see £12.6 million bid for Yeremay Hernandez rejected by Deportivo
As per the respected journalist, Deportivo have rejected a new bid from Chelsea for Hernandez, this time coming in at around £12.6 million – around £4.4 million below his £17 million release clause.
Hernandez has been called an exciting and “flamboyant” wide player by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, an expert on world football’s youngest rising stars, but it appears he won’t be coming to west London this month.

Arsenal fail to sign a new striker in January
While those within the beautiful game are anticipating a “busy” summer transfer window in north London (Charles Watts), manager Mikel Arteta arguably needed a new centre-forward in the winter.

Arteta bemoaned Arsenal’s lack of consistent creativity after their 2-0 loss to Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, which cost them a place in the Carabao Cup final, and it could yet hinder their chances of catching Liverpool in the Premier League title race.
Arsenal manager MikelArtetaapplauds fans after the match
Arsenal did have opportunities to strike a January deal for a new striker, most notably Watkins, but the Gunners apparently wouldn’t elevate their original offer.
“Villa gave Arsenal the opportunity to do this deal or have a conversation on the basis of a £60 million possibility,” said Ornstein on Arsenal’s attempt for Watkins.
“That was something clearly Arsenal were not prepared to do at that value for a 29-year-old, who in their eyes is probably not worth that much. They decided to suggest around the £40m mark. Villa were being serious when they suggested £60 million because that’s where they value him and if they need to make the numbers work, with PSR and whatever else.”
Another player they’ve been very keen on, especially Arteta, is £120,000-per-week Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
Alexander Isak tops Mikel Arteta's transfer wishlist at Arsenal
Ornstein, speaking on the Sky Sports Back Pages podcast, shared another update on Arsenal’s potential summer pursuit of a striker this week.
The reliable journalist said that Isak is top of Arteta’s personal transfer wishlist – but a deal will be extremely difficult to pull off.
“The way he [Isak] has developed and flourished is just spectacular, and it probably makes Arsenal rue their missed opportunity,” said Ornstein.
“There’s no doubt that he is the player that Mikel Arteta has at the top of his list. If he was to sign a striker, he’s seen as perfect for Arsenal’s system and everything he offers.
Alexander Isak scores for Newcastle
“But Newcastle fans will hate hearing that, because they’ve got him under contract for a few years yet. He’s their key player. He’s at the centre of what they and their Saudi-led ownership are doing.
“And they’ve got no intention of seeing him go anywhere. They want him to sign a new contract. If they don’t qualify for the Champions League, maybe there’s a consideration, but the price will be phenomenally high.
“Really, clubs like Arsenal should be looking for the next Alexander Isak, not the one who’s on the market if he was to come on the market. And also, we don’t even know that Isak would want to join Arsenal. I think it’s more realistic that Arsenal need to look for other targets, such as a Benjamin Sesko or whoever else is on the market.”

Hodge: Green might go on to become one of the best Australia has produced
Cameron Green has been retained in Australia’s T20I squad for the two matches against West Indies in Queensland next week as a “cautious” approach is taken with various injuries around the squad. However, Mitchell Marsh (ankle), Marcus Stoinis (side) and Mitchell Starc (knee) all return for the start of Australia’s final stretch into the T20 World Cup having sat out the trip to India along with David Warner who was rested from those three games.Kane Richardson and Ashton Agar, who flew back early from India having picked up minor injuries, won’t be part of the West Indies series on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane but are expected to feature in the three matches against England which follow.Related

Is Green too good not to pick and who misses out for David?
“We have and are taking a cautious approach with the World Cup on the near horizon,” national selector George Bailey said. “To have four key players return gives us the ability to take a conservative path with any minor issues and resolve those well in time for the World Cup. As such we anticipate Kane and Ashton will return for the following series against England.”Green was the standout performer in India with two half-centuries opening the innings for the first time in his professional career. The second of those came off just 19 balls. He is not part of the World Cup 15 but is now the frontrunner should there be the need to make any late changes, or injuries occur during the tournament.”It’s probably opportunistic, the way that he’s coming in with the opening position with obviously Davey Warner not being here and a couple of other players in our World Cup 15,” Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said after the final match in Hyderabad.”Fortuitous, but he’s taken that opportunity. We thought he had the skill when we did our strategy before we come over here. And he’s taken on some of the best bowlers in world cricket. You could argue Jasprit [Bumrah] is one of the best T20 bowlers ever. So to be able to do that, work your way through that situation again tonight, and do it two out of three times is very impressive and bodes well.”Sean Abbott and Daniel Sams, who were also part of the India tour, have been retained for the West Indies matches.Australia squad for West Indies T20Is: Aaron Finch, Sean Abbott, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Sams, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa

Jaffer, who was appointed in the role ahead of the 2020 season under Kumble, had stepped down ahead of the mega auction last year. In July 2021, he was appointed chief coach of the Odisha Ranji team following which he took up a role with the Bangladesh U-19 side.Langeveldt, meanwhile, worked as Punjab’s bowling coach during IPL 2020 and was replaced by Damien Wright in 2021. He is also currently the bowling coach of the South Africa men’s team.Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Haddin will once again team up with Bayliss, with whom he had previously worked at Sunrisers Hyderabad in the same role.Following yet another season in which they failed to make the final four, Kings have rung in changes, releasing nine players at the end of the retention deadline day on November 15. Chelsea are known to have one of the best academy systems in Europe, with the likes of Peter Osgood graduating from the academy, John Terry going from a 14-year-old signed by the club to the club captain, and a crop of players who are now scattered across the league at various clubs.
Mason Mount, Dominic Solanke, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Lewis Hall, Valentino Livramento, Marc Guehi, Nathan Ake, Declan Rice, Tariq Lamptey and Ian Maatsen are just some of those in England, whilst the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Jamal Musiala and Conor Gallagher are all thriving outside of England.
Whilst Chelsea have clearly produced high-end talent in every area of the pitch, there seems to be a clear pattern of highly rated full-back talents emerging through Cobham, with plenty of the above list leaving the club due to the emergence of another Cobham talent, who goes by the name Reece James.
Chelsea's right-back situation
James is now 25 years old and has made 168 appearances for Chelsea since breaking through into the first team from the academy, following a prior loan spell at Wigan Athletic.
The talented right-back has scored 12 goals and provided 23 assists in that time, totalling 11,503 minutes played, which includes playing a significant role in their 2020/21 Champions League triumph.
Despite the clear abundance of talent James has, one thing that has held him back throughout his career is persistent injury troubles, already missing 104 games in his Chelsea career so far, suffering from injuries or illness on 15 occasions.
Malo Gusto is another talented right back Chelsea have on their books, with him and James often rotating in Enzo Maresca’s side, looking to offer tactical balance for the Italian in his game plan.
However, Chelsea may have let go another Cobham academy graduate who would have been a perfect figure for this squad, not only adding extra experience, but also some extra 1v1 defensive ability.
The ex-Chelsea star who's outshining James & Guston
Chelsea sold Ola Aina to Italian club, Torino, back in 2019, allowing the fullback to leave for a fee of around £8.7m.
Six years later, the 28-year-old finds himself playing for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, with his side currently sitting third in the league, and his performances are playing a massive part in this.

When comparing Aina to James and Gusto this season, you can see the 28-year-old offers even stronger defensive qualities with ball recoveries and interceptions, but can also get forward and put dangerous crosses into the box, making 0.29 crosses into the penalty area per 90.
Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley labelled Aina as “exceptional” back in December, alluding to many other Forest players getting the credit, but not enough being shown to the full-back. According to former Nigeria international and Wigan Athletic striker, Julius Efosa Aghahowa, he’s even now “the best right-back in the Premier League”.
Aina has proven himself as a Premier League quality fullback, who offers versatility to play on both sides, can lead by example, and brings brilliant intangibles to a squad.
This could have been the exact character Chelsea needed to keep around from their own academy, especially when looking at the injury-prone nature of the super-talented James.
