Manchester United have been a side in transition in recent weeks after the appointment of Ruben Amorim, as he looks to put his own spin on the current playing squad.

The 39-year-old will have already seen the mammoth task he faces at Old Trafford after suffering two defeats in the space of a week against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal.

Set pieces have been just one area that has troubled the former Sporting CP boss in his first few weeks in charge, leaving him with a mountain to climb in taking the Red Devils back to their glory days.

He will undoubtedly want funds available in January to strengthen his side should he want to, allowing for a push throughout the second half of the Premier League campaign.

However, given the lack of quality in numerous key areas, the hierarchy may wish they had kept hold of numerous stars who have impressed after leaving Old Trafford in recent years.

Academy star James Garner looked at one stage as though he could be a key player for his boyhood club after he made his debut as a teenager at Old Trafford.

However, he would struggle to find a consistent place in the first team, enduring loan spells with the likes of Forest and Watford in the Championship.

The 23-year-old would swap Manchester for Merseyside, leaving in a £9m move to join fellow top-flight side Everton on a four-year contract.

Paul Pogba was another player who departed during the aforementioned window, just a handful of years after his club-record £89m transfer from Italian side Juventus.

The French midfielder made 226 appearances during his second spell with the Red Devils, before leaving on a free for the second time – rejoining Juve after six years back in England.

However, it’s the departure of another former first-team member that may now be a regret after his form away from Old Trafford in recent years.

Midfielder Andreas Pereira departed United during the summer of 2022, after eight years at the club, achieving a total of 75 appearances in the first team.

The Brazilian moved to Fulham for a fee in the region of £10m, a bargain given his form over the last couple of seasons under boss Marco Silva in the capital.

Pereira has become a key player for the Cottagers, producing some incredible numbers, including three goals and eight assists in all competitions last season – leading to a call-up to the Brazil national side.

However, the “phenomenal” talent, as dubbed by former boss José Mourinho, has impressed once more this season, leading to comparisons by FBref to Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

Whilst on the face of it, the comparison may seem a little far-fetched, he’s actually bettered the aforementioned pair in numerous key areas.

Pereira has registered slightly fewer combined goals and assists than Odegaard, but he’s managed a higher shot-on-target per 90 rate, along with more carries into the final third.

He’s also won more aerials, showcasing his all-round ability, as he’s operated in more of a central role than an attacking position as he did during his time at Old Trafford.

The £10m fee now looks to be an absolute bargain for Fulham, with United left to rue their decision to allow him to leave and join a Premier League rival.

Quality is something United have desperately been lacking over the last couple of seasons, with Pereira undoubtedly bringing that to Amorim’s side had the previous management team kept hold of the Brazilian.

As though aware of the import of the day, Hove looked at its loveliest this morning. And as though similarly attuned to occasion, the cricketers put aside the chilly conditions and offered us fine sport; well-contested stuff it was, too, and comforting for Sussex supporters who might have feared for their young side when facing the Division Two favourites. But instead of Steven Mullaney’s bowlers bullying the team their skipper had inserted, they were compelled to work for their wickets. Three Sussex batsmen made half-centuries and Delray Rawlins was one run shy of becoming the fourth when he bottom-edged a cut off Mullaney into his stumps an over before the close.By then, though, Tom Clark’s patient, career-best 82 not out had seen his side past 300 and only Liam Patterson-White – three wickets, a catch and a run-out, if you please – had made it probable that the visitors will not face another long session or two in the field. It was all far better than the locals had expected when they greeted each other with warm handshakes and good fellowship at the start of the day. It little mattered in those moments that music blared out during warm-ups or that today’s cricketers own gadgets their predecessors would not recognise. There were hugs, too, and one barely noticed them until one remembered that a year ago such intimacies were thought dangerous. Indeed, this was the first summer since 2019 when spectators could turn up at Hove and watch the season begin. His fellow opener had scored more slowly but Orr’s innings was accustomed and patient, its tempo pleasing. In the second hour of the morning the balance changed as Haines was tied down by Patterson-White’s slow left-arm and Fletcher’s second spell. When the players came in for lunch – Sussex supporters probably thought it a feast – Haines was unbeaten on 55 and Orr had 41.The small familiar things about Hove gave pleasure, too. Like Catholics on a day of obligation, the blue-and-white-striped deckchairs were in their appointed place, though they had had few occupants on a morning when a ruthless wind gusted between villas and flats before bending flagpoles and disrupting run-ups. And at least conditions had improved since the previous afternoon when rain strafed the promenade, the sea frothed in grey ferment and two ladies’ hats disappeared into Regency Square, their owners pursuing them with athleticism they hadn’t managed since the summers when Alan Oakman’s tentacles clutched catches at short-leg.One or two of the multi-layered loyalists in the members’ enclosures may have seen Oakman burgle quarter-chances and they settled down again for an afternoon in which the plain priority for the home side in was to capitalise on their morning’s work. However, Patterson-White saw to it they could not do so. First he drifted a full-length ball on the flannel-fluttering breeze before turning it inside Haines’s attempted drive and bowling the Sussex skipper for 59. Next over he had the Hampshire loanee Tom Alsop leg before wicket for a three-ball 1, although a defence brief would have contested height. Nothing troubled Orr, though, and nothing disturbed the neutrals, either. Wickets fell elsewhere but we lost track of them. For long moments our world contained only Hove and its gentle pageant. Even the mere awareness of other matches faded.Nottinghamshire’s cricketers also had a narrow focus and they were to gain more rewards before tea. First Oli Carter smacked a long-hop from Hutton straight to Patterson-White at midwicket and then the spinner tempted Orr into a loose drive that only edged a catch to Mullaney at slip. It says much about the opener’s composure that the error was unexpected. Orr’s batting seems uncomplicated by faff and one hopes his 68 was a happy portent for the season. He has now passed fifty six times in 15 first-class innings and his name is already inked on future team-sheets, especially given the early-season injuries afflicting his colleagues.Indeed, head coach Ian Salisbury’s problems when selecting a team for this game were exacerbated by the unavailability of six members of his squad: for example, Fynn Hudson-Prentice has a stress fracture; Cheteshwar Pujara doesn’t have a visa; George Garton is recovering from long Covid; and Jack Carson from a knee operation. Nottinghamshire, by contrast, were able to select ten of the side that began last year’s opener against Durham and this game was seen in a few quarters as something of a mismatch. Only English cricket could split the counties into two divisions and then begin the season with the side that nearly won the title taking on the side that finished bottom of the pile. If you had offered Salisbury a tea score of 189 for 4 after being inserted, he would surely have snapped it up.If anything, the final session of the day only emphasised Sussex’s resilience. Fletcher, who rarely finds it easy to bowl down the hill here, was repeatedly driven through the covers by Clark, who reached a fine fifty when he stroked Evison through mid-off. A chaotic run-out saw Dan Ibrahim go for 15 but Rawlins made certain that one breakthrough brought nothing but more hard work for the bowlers. While his departure was a fillip for Mullaney, the Nottinghamshire skipper had plenty to ponder as the players departed the field and Hove was left in the singing-light of this first evening in a fresh world.

Premier League strugglers Southampton have now made an offer to an “elite” manager as they look to find a replacement for Russell Martin, according to a new report.

The Saints played their first game since the sacking of Martin on Wednesday evening, and while it was another defeat, this time in the Carabao Cup to Liverpool, Southampton put in a good shift under interim boss Simon Rusk. They are next in action on Sunday against Fulham at Craven Cottage, and the hope was that they could have a new manager in time for that game, but it looks like that is going to be hard to do at this moment in time.

It is believed that Southampton are favouring an out-of-work manager and have been looking at the overseas market to find their next manager. Former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand has been admired by Southampton for a while, and he is an option that is being considered by the Premier League side. As is Ivan Juric, who has managed AS Roma most recently and is currently out of work.

However, the Saints have also been linked with managers who are currently employed by clubs, one of whom is Danny Rohl of Sheffield Wednesday. The German is said to be under consideration for the role, but his compensation fee to get him out of Hillsborough is said to be an issue. It has also emerged that Santa Clara boss Vasco Matos is on the list of candidates to become the new Saints boss. The Portuguese isn’t considered high up on the list, but he is someone who is of interest to those at St Mary’s.

Southampton table proposal for "elite" manager

All these managers appear to be on Southampton’s list, but they have their eye on another manager. According to Spanish outlet AS, Southampton have made an important offer to Carlos Corberan in their bid to make him their new manager.

Corberan, who has been hailed as an “elite” coach by scout Petar Petrov, has been in charge of Championship side West Brom since October 2022. The 41-year-old started his coaching career at Spanish side Villarreal, working his way up to first-team assistant manager. He then worked in Saudi before joining Leeds United in 2017, where he was under-21 manager and then assistant manager under Marcelo Bielsa.

Corberan has been a manager at Huddersfield as well as West Brom in England, and while he has yet to seal promotion from the second tier, he guided the Terriers to the play-off final and has got his Baggies side playing some impressive football. Corberan’s way of playing has now put him on Southampton’s radar, who have now made an “important offer” to make him their next manager.

The report states that the Saints are keen on appointing Corberan, as his work has impressed the board, and they are “convinced” he is the right man for the job. The Premier League side are willing to hand Corberan the “keys to the project,” and it appears they are now waiting for his response.

Tentando encontrar o tento de igualdade logo na sequência, o Dragão sabia que tinha pouco tempo até o término da etapa inicial. Até que aos 43 minutos, Shaylon chegou a marcar, porém o gol foi anulado com auxílio do VAR, para lamentação do atacante.

DRAGÃO VIRA NA SEGUNDA ETAPA…

Na volta para a última metade, apenas o técnico do Goiás, Glauber Ramos, foi quem optou por uma troca tirando Pedro Raul para colocar em seu lugar Albano. Mas quem surpreendeu foram os visitantes. Com 1 minuto no relógio, Marlon Freitas, após receber passe de Shaylon, mandou uma bomba no ângulo sem chances para Tadeu. Tudo igual na Serrinha.

O tento empolgou o time de Umberto Louzer que, logo na sequência, virou o jogo. Aos 4, foi a vez de Wellington Rato, também após passe de Shaylon, saiu da marcação de Yan Souto para fazer 2 a 1 e colocar o Dragão em vantagem.

E TINHA MAIS

Percebendo o bom momento, o Atlético não quis saber de pisar no freio. Sendo assim, aos 21 minutos, depois de duas assistências, foi a vez dele marcar, Shaylon, em um lindo gol, depois de driblar o goleiro Tadeu e, praticamente sem ângulo, chutou para fazer 3 a 1 na contagem.

RETA FINAL

Praticamente com o jogo resolvido, os dois treinadores ainda apostaram nas últimas mudanças. Porém, sem grandes emoções, o Atlético-GO apenas segurou o resultado para garantir mais um título em sua história, com um sabor especial, fazendo a festa na casa do rival.

It would be hard to describe this season as anything other than a disaster for Tottenham Hotspur so far.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are in the bottom half of the table, have a seemingly ever-growing injury list, and while there is still a chance they beat Liverpool in their upcoming League Cup semi-final, it’s a very slim one.

Moreover, while the club are the second-highest scorers in the league, players like Timo Werner continue to disappoint.

So, fans should be excited by recent reports linking the North Londoners to someone who would be the perfect upgrade on the German, someone so talented they have even been compared to the incredible Eberechi Eze.

According to a recent report from the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham are one of several clubs who have enquired about Barcelona’s Dani Olmo.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that fellow Premier League sides Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal are keen on the Spaniard, while Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have also shown interest.

Interestingly, the report claims that while the player, who cost Barça £51m in the summer, has his heart set on staying, he may leave for free if the Catalan club fails to register him by January 3rd, which looks to be a real possibility.

Due to the level of competition, it could prove to be a difficult transfer to get over the line, but given Olmo’s sensational ability, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as he’s won comparisons to Eze and would be a dream Werner upgrade.

How Olmo compares to Werner and Eze

So, before we look at how Olmo compares to Werner, let’s examine this comparison to Eze and where it has come from.

It primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the second most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Spaniard over the last 365 days.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair ranks closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals, progressive carries, shots and shots on target, tackles won, successful take-ons and more, all per 90.

However, he shares another similarity with Eze, which is also one of the reasons Spurs should sign him: his positional versatility.

For example, like the Crystal Palace star, the £149k-per-week “genius,” as dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting, can play in multiple positions on the pitch but specialises in attacking midfield and out on the wings, which is why he could be an ideal Werner upgrade.

To see how much of an upgrade he’d be on the German wideman, we only need to look at their raw output since the start of last season.

For example, since the start of last season, the 26-year-old dynamo has scored 14 goals and provided six assists in 40 appearances, equating to an impressive average of a goal involvement every other game.

In contrast, the RB Leipzig loanee has scored five goals and provided seven assists in 51 appearances across the same period, which comes out to a far less impressive average of a goal involvement every 4.25 games.

Ultimately, if Spurs find themselves with an opportunity to sign Olmo this month, they must take it, as he’d be an instant upgrade on Werner as an option off the left, and he’s good enough to fight for a place in the midfield as well.

E mesmo com um triunfo pelo Brasileirão, o técnico Vítor Pereira promoveu cinco mudanças para o duelo pela Liberta.

Após o confronto diante do Cali, o treinador corintiano justificou a opção reforçando que ela será uma máxima do elenco para aguentar a temporada com um calendário de jogos excessivos, e que precisará encontrar uma equipe equilibrada entre atletas mais novos e os experientes.

– O que está claro é que, independentemente da idade, não é possível (jogar em alto nível com o mesmo time). Se estivermos candados não vamos jogar com intensidade, dinâmica e pressão que eu pretendo e trabalhamos todos os dias. Os mais experientes têm muita qualidade, os mais novos muita vontade e energia, as vezes até demais, e manter o time competitivo é o grande desafio. Misturar um e outro e ver se recuperam – explicou VP em entrevista coletiva.

O elenco corintiano desde o segundo semestre do ano passado foi reforçado com alguns jogadores com idade acima dos 30 anos, que chegaram ao Timão com status de estrelismo. O grande desafio era colocá-los para jogar juntos. No entanto, Vítor Pereira garante que isso não será possível, e que os atletas mais jovens serão importantes para ‘carregar o piano’ nos jogos.

Vítor Pereira, inclusive, reconheceu o erro de ter escalado o Corinthians em alto nível de desgaste físico na semifinal do Campeonato Paulista, contra o São Paulo, há três semanas, no qual o Timão foi eliminado da competição estadual.

– Não vou força-los a jogar cansados, como foi na semifinal, contra o São Paulo, e aí a culpa é minha, por não perceber essa capacidade de resposta e ter colocados eles com dois dias a menos de descanso do que o rival. Para jogar, os nossos jogadores precisam estar frescos para criar dinâmicas e situações de movimentos. Esse elenco tem jogadores de muita qualidade, alguns acima dos 30, mas de muita qualidade, e que não precisam correr como os outros, mas temos que equilibrar os que têm energia para correr mais e os mais velhos para ter uma equipe competitiva – comentou Vítor.

O movimento de revezamento no Corinthians havia começado já no último fim de semana, quando atletas como Renato Augusto foi preservado do jogo contra o Botafogo, pelo Brasileirão.

Vítor Pereira ilustrou a escolha analisando a entrada do meia Du Queiroz no segundo tempo, contra o Deportivo Cali, após jogar durante os 90 minutos contra o clube carioca, no último fim de semana.

– Tenho muito claro que eles (jogadores) preferem fazer um jogo de alta qualidade e serem elogiados do que exigir que eles joguem em sequência e no terceiro jogo errem passe no campo e sejam criticados, e serão criticados por falta de capacidade de resposta. Hoje eu vi o Du (Queiroz) e senti, porque eu obriguei ele a jogar 90 minutos contra o Botafogo, que ele não foi aquele Du fresco. E o Du tem vinte e poucos anos. Então percebi que para ter uma equipe competitiva, em três dias preciso mudar jogadores, não há outra forma – afirmou VP.

O próximo compromisso do Timão será neste sábado (16), contra o Avaí, às 19h, novamente na Neo Química Arena, dessa vez pelo Campeonato Brasileiro.

O elenco corintiano se reapresentará já na tarde desta quinta-feira (14), na parte da tarde. Vítor Pereira explicou que utilizará os atletas que não jogaram ou atuaram pouco tempo contra o Deportivo Cali, com a atividade sendo completada por atletas das categorias de base.

– Pelo calendário são os próprios jogadores que vão dar condições, Com quem vamos trabalhar amanhã? Com os que jogaram hoje, ou jogaram a maior parte do tempo, Vamos recuperar na maior parte. Amanhã chamamos cinco, seus ou se da base para juntar-se ao grupo, os que não jogaram ou jogaram pouco – explicou VP.

Pela Libertadores, o próximo compromisso corintiano será no dia 26 de abril, contra o Boca Júniors, da Argentina, na Neo Química Arena.

Com a vitória do Timão, o grupo E ficou embolado, com todos os times com três pontos, uma vitória e uma derrota. O clube alvinegro é o lanterna por ter um gol a menos que os demais da chave.
