Sheffield Wednesday in new contract talks with "very interesting" 19 y/o

Sheffield Wednesday are believed to be in talks with a “very interesting” player over signing a new deal at the club, according to a new update from reliable journalist Joe Crann.

Sheffield Wednesday find form after poor run

It has been an up-and-down start to the season for the Owls, who started the campaign on fire with a 4-0 win at home to Plymouth Argyle, only to go on an alarming poor run of form that suggested another relegation battle could be on the cards in 2024/25.

Thankfully, Wednesday have turned things around in recent weeks, winning 3-2 at home to West Brom, who were top of the Championship table at the time, and they have only lost one of their last six outings in the league, winning three of them.

Next up for Danny Rohl’s side is a home clash with Watford on Saturday afternoon, as the Owls look to improve on their current 13th-place position and edge closer to the playoff positions.

Wednesday aren’t without injury problems heading into the game, with Akin Famewo a long-term absentee, but they are still primed to pick up another good result, showing that they are more likely to be promotion candidates than relegation fodder.

Sheffield Wednesday ace in talks over new deal

According to the reliable Crann on X, Sheffield Wednesday are in talks with youngster Sean Fusire over signing a contract extension at Hillsborough: “Understand that SWFC are currently in contract talks with promising midfielder, Sean Fusire, as they look to try and make sure he doesn’t reach the end of his deal – that expires in June.”

Fusire may not be a fixture in the Owls’ team by any means, not yet featuring for a minute of Championship action this season, but tying down talented young players to new deals can be as important as bringing in more high-profile signings.

The 19-year-old has six first-team appearances to his name for Wednesday to date, while Rohl has praised him in the past, saying: “I think we have two players from the academy, Rio [Shipston] and Sean [Fusire]. I think Sean impressed in the last two weeks.

“Good skills. Could be very interesting to see him in the six or eight. Against Salzburg, we tried to play him as a winger, but against Brighton he played as a 6/8 and it was good to see.”

It won’t be easy for Fusire to become a key man, considering the midfield quality that the Owls possess, not least the continually impressive Barry Bannan, but the fact that the club seem keen to tie him down to an extension suggests that they expect plenty from him in the future.

"Strong" Sheffield Wednesday player set to miss months after "big" injury

The news has been confirmed…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 30, 2024

Eventually, a successor to Bannan will need to be found, and fresh blood will generally need to be added to Rohl’s team, and it could be that the Championship outfit see their teenage ace as a big player in the middle of the park moving forward.

T20 World Cup finalists Australia and New Zealand have added a three-match T20I series in New Zealand next March in the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup which will run concurrently with Australia’s tour to Pakistan.Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Friday that the two teams will meet in three T20Is in New Zealand on March 17, 18 and 20 in Wellington and Napier. Australia will need to send a separate T20I squad to New Zealand as they did earlier in 2021 when the two teams played a five-match series while Australia’s Test team was scheduled to play in South Africa, although the Test tour was subsequently cancelled due to CA’s covid concerns.Justin Langer missed the New Zealand tour with senior assistant Andrew McDonald taking charge of the team. David Warner, Steven Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood also missed the five-match series in New Zealand. All would likely miss next year’s series as well given they will be required in Pakistan with the three Tests being played between March 3 and March 25. A three-match ODI series and one-off T20I will follow in Pakistan starting on March 29.CA confirmed that once again another T20I squad would be selected without the first-choice Test players, with the Pakistan Tests taking priority. CA chief executive Nick Hockley said the series was important for both nations despite it being shoehorned into the calendar alongside the Pakistan tour.”New Zealand’s home summer schedule has been heavily impacted by the pandemic, and we are pleased to be able to support our closest neighbour with this T20I tour,” Hockley said. “As well as supporting New Zealand Cricket to host a full summer of international cricket, it will also be a great opportunity for our men’s T20 team to ramp up their preparations ahead of our home ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in October and November next year.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

NZC chief executive David White was grateful for CA’s support with New Zealand’s closed border causing issues in terms of getting teams to travel there.”The impact of Covid-19 has meant a number of changes to our schedule – and we want to place on record our thanks to Cricket Australia for agreeing to send a team across the Tasman at such short notice,” White said. “NZC and CA have always enjoyed a close relationship and we really appreciate the lengths they’ve gone to in order to help us.”New Zealand’s 2021-22 schedule
New Zealand will kick off their 2021-22 home season with the New Year’s Test against Bangladesh in Tauranga. Christchurch will host the second and final Test of the series. After that, New Zealand will travel to Australia for three ODIs and a T20I although travel restrictions could still cause complications for that tour with the opening match set for Perth on January 30. Western Australia’s border could still be closed at the point depending on vaccination rates. In February, South Africa will visit New Zealand for a two-match Test series. The games will be played in Christchurch and Wellington. That will be followed by Australia’s above-mentioned visit for three T20Is. New Zealand will end their home summer with a T20I and three ODIs against Netherlands. This will be the first time New Zealand and Netherlands will be involved in a bilateral series in any format. All four Tests will be part of New Zealand’s World Test Championship title defence, and all the ODIs through the summer will count towards World Cup Super League for automatic qualification for the 2023 edition.

Australia hold all the aces, but Cummins doesn't want to 'forward-plan too much'

The hosts will miss Hazlewood, but have a ready replacement in Jhye Richardson and might give a bigger role to Cameron Green

Pat Cummins’ learning-on-the-fly captaincy will be tested in Adelaide this week as he juggles an attack without one of Australia’s pink-ball spearheads plus the added factor of the day-night element.Cummins – and Australia – have more day-night experience to call on than others. He has been involved in five of the team’s eight floodlit Tests, in which they have a 100% record with five of the wins coming at Adelaide Oval. And while the tactical elements of the format are, perhaps, sometimes overblown – Faf du Plessis’ declaration in the 2016-17 Test is the only example of a captain really thinking outside the box, and that was partly because David Warner was off the field – it will now fall on Cummins’ shoulders to make the decisions needed.Related

Jhye Richardson to replace Hazlewood for second Test; Warner to play despite damaged rib

Being a bowler will give him plenty of first-hand knowledge of what can happen in the final session of the day when the lights have taken hold. In the 2017-18 Ashes Test, Australia were on the receiving end of James Anderson and Chris Woakes nipping the ball around after Steven Smith had not enforced the follow-on, but Australia’s advantage was so large that it didn’t change the outcome.”There’s a few different considerations for sure,” Cummins said. “Think you have to earn the right to dictate the timings of the game. There’s a few things you think about if you are in a certain stage, whether you might do a slightly different declaration, but you really have to be in that position. Don’t think you can forward-plan too much.”One hour can be a long time in a pink-ball game. Nothing can happen, or it can be darting around everywhere, you feel like you’ll lose a wicket every ball. You can have a think about planning ahead but you have to play what’s in front of you. It’s still a new format and we are still learning.”In reality, though, Australia have rarely been challenged too hard in Adelaide with their three-wicket win in the first match of the format against New Zealand in 2015-16 the tightest occasion. Whichever team bats first, barring a strange set of circumstances, the timing of a declaration only comes into the reckoning if the innings has gone deep into the second day.”It’s still not a huge sample size but you feel like you learn something new every time you play one,” Cummins said. “You might get a period of play where the ball just starts swinging around and you can’t explain why. We’ve got good experience. Definitely when you start the match you can’t see it playing out exactly like a red-ball game.”This time, though, there is one difference Cummins will need to contend with: the absence of Josh Hazlewood, who has a magnificent record with the pink ball, having taken 32 wickets at 19.90 (although that is still the highest average of Australia’s big three, which emphasises England’s task). However, the attack remains strong with Jhye Richardson a ready replacement, albeit not with the height of Hazlewood. Instead, he will challenge England with sharp, late outswing at around 145kph – which is not a bad skillset for this type of Test. He also averages 19.33 in day-night first-class cricket with five wickets on his debut in a floodlit Test against Sri Lanka.Cameron Green could have a bigger role to play with the ball than he did in Brisbane•CA/Cricket Australia/Getty Images

There was a suggestion from Cummins that allrounder Cameron Green – who has the height to match Hazlewood – could see a more prominent role with the ball, having impressed in the Gabba, especially with his dismissal of Joe Root in England’s second innings.”We are really lucky to have bench strength like Jhye to walk straight in,” Cummins said. “Josh is one of the best in the world and is very hard to replace, but think Jhye really is in that upper echelon. He’s been bowling fantastically.”Probably the biggest change is having someone like Cameron Green to lean on as well. Will probably try and get him into the game a bit more. Nathan [Lyon] always finds a bit of spin. We aren’t short of options at any time.”Despite the injury to Hazlewood and the concerns over David Warner’s fitness with how much he will be hampered by his damaged ribs, the majority of the problems remain England’s – largely around whether their batting line-up can post a strong first-innings total, but also balancing an attack to take 20 wickets – as they try to get themselves back into the series.”It went perfectly for us [in Brisbane], no doubt that’s not going to happen every game and certainly won’t happen this series I’m sure,” Cummins said. “We couldn’t be happier with the start but know it’s one match in a five-match series.”That said, Australia’s record in this fixture would suggest that Cummins is well placed to be able to continue his perfect start in the captaincy seat.

The next Henry: Arsenal offered chance to sign £206k-p/w Jesus upgrade

Arsenal haven’t had the start to the 2024/25 Premier League season they would’ve wished for, already losing two of their opening ten matches against Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Red cards have undoubtedly hampered their progress, receiving three already, with all of the dismissals having a huge impact on the full-time scoreline.

William Saliba saw red against Bournemouth, ultimately contributing to the defeat, with Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice both receiving their marching orders against Manchester City and Brighton – the Gunners leading both matches but going on to drop points in each encounter.

Mikel Arteta’s side have once again been crying out for that focal point at the top end of the pitch to provide that added cutting edge they’ve been hunting for in recent years.

It’s safe to say, that the supporters would do anything to have a current version of one fan-favourite who captured the hearts of the fanbase during his time in North London.

Thierry Henry’s stats for Arsenal

Arsenal will never get themselves a greater bargain, signing forward Thierry Henry for just £11m back in the summer of 1999, linking up with fellow Frenchman Arsène Wenger at Highbury.

It’s safe to say he made the perfect introduction for the fanbase scoring 26 times in all competitions during his debut campaign in North London.

Whilst his tally for his first season may have seemed impressive, Henry managed to maintain such a record, reaching double figures in every single season he featured in the capital between 1999 and 2007 – a simply incredible feat.

Such a record saw him break the record for the most goals ever scored by an Arsenal player, still holding the top spot with his tally of 228 – forever cementing his place in the Gunners’ history books.

He produced countless moments of magic during his time at the club, from his superb flick and volley against Manchester United to his final ever goal for the Gunners against Sunderland back in 2012 – undoubtedly going down as one of if not the very best to grace the Premier League.

Arteta and the supporters must wish for a player of that quality in the present day, potentially having the opportunity to sign a player like the Frenchman in the upcoming January transfer window.

Arsenal handed chance to sign new striker in January

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Arsenal are one of a number of English sides presented with an opportunity to sign PSG striker Randal Kolo-Muani on loan in the coming months.

The 25-year-old joined the Ligue 1 side for a whopping £75m back in the summer of 2023, but has failed to make a real impact, scoring just 11 times in 51 appearances.

Kolo Muani has only started two league matches so far in 2024/25, with a temporary move to the Emirates potentially kickstarting his career, whilst allowing Arteta’s side to gain a clinical finisher in the final third.

There would certainly be excitement regarding that switch owing to his potential likeness to that man Henry, with the official Bundesliga website previously noting that comparison:

Not only perhaps the next Henry, he would also prove to be an upgrade on current first-team member Gabriel Jesus, who’s massively struggled for form this campaign, looking a shadow of his former self.

When comparing the duo on FBref, it’s evident that the “incredible” PSG talent, as dubbed by talent scout Antonio Mango, is a better option than the Brazilian – adding a new dimension to Arteta’s attack in North London.

Kolo Muani has managed a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate than Jesus so far this campaign, whilst also producing a better pass completion rate – fitting perfectly into the Spaniard’s possession-based system at the Emirates.

He’s also completed more take-ons, whilst blowing the Brazilian out of the water for aerials won, offering that focal point that the Gunners have massively been craving in recent years.

Whilst they may have competition for his signature in January, it’s clear that the 25-year-old would be an excellent addition to Arteta’s side.

The £206k-per-week star has an all-round ability similar to that of club-legend Henry, potentially handing the club a huge advantage in their title aspirations this season.

It’s finally time for Aston Villa to sell their "exciting signing"

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery could be a busy man when the January transfer window comes around.

The club are in a great position to make it through to the knockout round of the Champions League, with these added games adding more pressure to the squad.

That pressure has been ramped up after six consecutive games without a win, meaning another few bodies will surely do in the upcoming transfer window.

Who Aston Villa could sign in January

According to reports emerging in recent days, it looks as thought the Villa Park side are in the mood to sign a new forward despite the form of Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins this season. Indeed, it’s claimed that they are showing interest in Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee, who is currently struggling at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim is looking at making some drastic changes at the Red Devils and this could see the Dutchman sold in January.

Elsewhere, CaughtOffside has reported that Emery is looking to sign Real Madrid youngster Arda Güler on loan, with the Spanish side open to let the teenager leave on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

These two signings could certainly offer something extra for Villa going forward, although will Emery need to move some players on to free up the wage bill and raise funds?

That may well be the case, so who is the most expendable asset?

How Aston Villa can raise funds in January

One name who might be open to leaving the club is Emiliano Buendia, who hasn’t been getting too many opportunities under Emery since returning from a serious injury.

Former Norwich midfielder Emi Buendia.

The Argentinewas signed by former manager Dean Smith in the summer of 2021, it was initially seen as an exciting move. Smith was only too pleased to capture the attacking midfielder, saying:

His first season saw the attacking midfielder score four goals for the club in the top flight, while the 2022/23 campaign saw Buendia net just five times. Nine goals in two seasons for a player who cost Villa £33m was hardly the best return.

Things went from bad to worse, however, when he cruelly picked a cruciate ligament injury that ruled out the former Norwich star for the entirety of last term.

Villa subsequently went on to make great strides without him, signing new England international Morgan Rogers in January, who eventually settled into the number 10 role – Buendia’s favoured position.

Of course, he is still battling back from this injury, yet the midfielder has played only 196 minutes in all competitions for the club this season. With a contract until the summer of 2026, might Emery look to use January as the time to cash in on their once-record signing?

Taking home £75k-per-week for minimal output on the field, he should be one of the players who the club must be keen on moving on sooner rather than later.

Although hailed by Smith as being an exciting signing in 2021, he hasn’t quite lived up to his lavish fee. That’s a certainty.

After an ankle injury put Dane van Niekerk out of action for at least three months, Lizelle Lee, too, has been forced to miss South Africa’s upcoming ODI series against West Indies at home; Lee, ICC’s Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2021, is recovering from Covid-19. Sune Luus will take over the captaincy for the series of four ODIs, with Chloe Tryon named vice-captain.South Africa still have a formidable squad, with senior pros Marizanne Kapp, Shabnim Ismail, Laura Wolvaardt, Mignon du Preez and Trisha Chetty all in the mix, apart from Luus and Tryon.Schedule

1st ODI: January 28
2nd ODI: January 31
3rd ODI: February 3
4th ODI: January 6
All matches will be played at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium

“Sune has really managed the captaincy quite well in the absence of our leaders, Dane and Chloe, and we are quite exciting to be giving her the role again and in our conversations with her, she really rolled out the pathway for us, getting through the West Indies tour and for the World Cup,” convenor of selectors Clinton du Preez said in a CSA statement. “We are quite happy to have her back in that role and I am sure the leadership and the senior players in the team will give her massive support.”Chloe as the vice-captain is a great combination between the two individuals and personalities and we think it will be a balanced approach for our successes.”Luus has led South Africa in 16 of her 88 ODIs and 15 of her 83 T20Is.In the squad of 18 is 25-year-old offspinner Raisibe Ntozakhe, who was cleared to bowl in international cricket in September last year after being suspended from bowling for a suspect action and undergoing remedial work.Related

“We are quite comfortable with the squad we have selected.
