Forget Dessers: Impressive 7/10 Rangers star stole the show vs Dundee

Glasgow Rangers secured progress into the semi-finals of the League Cup for the fourth season in a row as the team returned to Ibrox.

Dundee were the visitors to Glasgow on Saturday evening, but it was Philippe Clement’s side who delivered a professional performance, securing a fairly straightforward 3-0 win which surely will bolster their confidence heading into the Europa League clash against Malmö in midweek.

Despite a large selection of the Ibrox faithful calling for summer signings Nedim Bajrami and Hamza Igamane to be unleashed in the starting XI, it was only the former who was chosen by Clement.

Cyriel Dessers was the preferred option to lead the line against the Dens Park side, enjoying an excellent display.

Cyriel Dessers returned to form against Dundee

Last weekend against Dundee United, Dessers failed to get on the scoresheet, while he managed to have just one shot on target, completing only six passes during the match.

Igamane enjoyed a decent cameo, showing flashes of his ability, which led to claims that he could be given his first start against Dundee.

It wasn’t to be for the Moroccan youngster, but his time will come. Dessers led the line wonderfully, scoring twice while also winning the penalty from which James Tavernier scored his first of the season.

This will boost his confidence no doubt, but the key for the Nigerian is to keep his foot on the gas and continue to get into goalscoring positions.

It wasn’t just the 29-year-old who shone, as one of Clement’s summer signings continued to demonstrate his quality.

Jefte's performance against Dundee

Ever since Ridvan Yilmaz was ruled out with an injury a few weeks ago, Jefte has been trusted at left-back, and he hasn’t disappointed, that’s for sure.

The Brazilian has built upon his early displays and has been not only dependable defensively, but has also demonstrated his attacking prowess going forward into the final third.

Jefte

In the Premiership, he has succeeded with an impressive 71% of his dribble attempts while winning over half of his total duels. The more he plays, the better he will get.

Against Dundee, Jefte was in sublime form. He regularly burst forward from left-back to support the midfield and attack yet was also able to defend when required.

Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie hailed the defender during the game, saying: “The variation in Jefte’s game is so impressive. Whether a cross, carry or one-two he has so much in his locker.”

Barrie also said after the game: “Another really good performance from Jefte – at 20, you’d expect there’s a lot more to come from him too.”

The future looks bright for the 20-year-old, who was given a match rating of 7/10 by Glasgow World for his positive display at Ibrox.

If he keeps this up, Yilmaz will struggle to make his way back into the starting XI, no doubt about that.

Jack Leach turns screw on Surrey as Somerset confirm top-flight progress

Spinner takes five after Stoneman, Burns fifties to open prospect of final-day win

Jack Leach took five wickets as Somerset celebrated securing their place in the first division by putting Surrey under pressure on the third day at the Kia Oval. The England left-arm spinner finished with 5 for 42 from 33 including 19 maidens as Surrey reached 239 for 8 in reply to Somerset’s 429.Hampshire’s failure to secure maximum batting points against Gloucestershire ensured Somerset’s place in the top-flight when the LV= Insurance County Championship concludes in September, and Leach bowled outstandingly to give them an outside chance of finishing Group 2 with a victory.Surrey still require 41 runs to avoid the follow-on after Somerset chipped away once opening pair Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman had been parted with the score on 98 in the last over before lunch. It was their other slow left-armer, Roelof van der Merwe, who made the breakthrough when Burns top-edged a sweep shortly after reaching 50 which included a reverse-sweep for six off Leach and six fours. It was about the only occasion when Leach was collared as settled into a good rhythm, providing control and getting the ball to turn on a slow surface. In six previous Championship games this season he bowled 130 overs in total and clearly relished three long spells here.Stoneman had played nicely for his 67, with ten fours, when he was deceived by Leach’s arm ball with the total on 136 before Leach picked up the key wicket of Hashim Amla. The South African faced 278 balls for an unbeaten 37 against Hampshire last week and was settling in for another long vigil when he was caught and bowled off a leading edge for 16 from 66 balls.Leach switched to the pavilion end to snap up Jamie Smith who was caught behind off one that turned just before tea. Immediately after the resumption Ravi Ashwin edged his first ball to second slip and Leach had his five-for when Devon Conway ran back from mid-wicket to take a great catch over his shoulder off Ryan Patel’s top-edged sweep.Somerset delayed taking the new ball, preferring to let Leach and van der Merwe probe away, but when they did Jordan Clark and Rikki Clarke batted sensibly to put on 42 in 21 overs. Clark had made 33 when van der Merwe, who gave Leach good support with 3 for 54, returned and had him caught at second slip before bowling Jamie Overton around his legs in the last over.

West Brom receive big injury boost regarding "ridiculous" £3.3m talent

West Brom have received a significant injury boost regarding a key Baggies player, according to a fresh update from Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox.

West Brom under pressure to bounce back

Carlos Corberan’s side have suffered a sobering couple of matches in the Championship in recent days, having looked like a genuine front-runner to secure automatic promotion this time last week. Last weekend, West Brom lost 3-2 away to Sheffield Wednesday, coming back from 2-0 down at Hillsborough only to concede a winner soon after, and that was followed by a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

While there is clearly no need for an overreaction, these two losses have acted as a genuine reality check for Corberan and his players, not to mention being a timely reminder of just how competitive and unpredictable the Championship can be throughout a season.

The key now for the Baggies is to bounce back on Saturday, with Millwall making the trip to the Hawthorns looking to cause an upset. The south London side are 16th in the league currently, having only won two of their opening eight matches in the competition this season, so victory for West Brom has to be expected.

West Brom given boost regarding "ridiculous" ace

According to Cox on X, Grady Diangana is “in contention” to face Millwall this weekend, with his shoulder injury suffered away to Wednesday not as bad as first feared.

This is a much-needed positive for West Brom after a taxing week, considering what an important squad figure Diangana is for Corberan. Granted, the 26-year-old is yet to start in the Championship this season, instead making five appearances from the substitutes’ bench, but he has been hailed as “ridiculous” by former teammate Kean Bryan, while Lee Hendrie’s past comments say a lot about the winger’s talent level.

“I had a good chat with Gareth Barry about him and he says that he’ll go on and play at the top. They adore him at West Brom and I think they’d love to keep hold of him but the situation with West Brom potentially going up and West Ham potentially going down, he could see himself back in the Championship. He’s been magnificent, easy on the eye and a massive plus-point for West Brom.”

Diangana, valued at around £3.3m, seems unlikely to start against Millwall, but having him available as an option off the bench would be great news for West Brom, who need all the depth possible as this season goes on.

West Brom star just had his worst game of the season vs Boro

West Bromwich Albion have now worryingly lost two games on the trot in the Championship.

The Congo international has 22 goals and 19 assists in 172 appearances for the Baggies, showing the end product he can bring, and his influence will be vital in the coming months.

Jenny Gunn four-for, Bess Heath 58* as Northern Diamonds book spot place at Finals Day

Thunder limp to 90 for 9 before Diamonds dispatch chase in 12.2 overs

ECB Reporters' Network30-Aug-2021

Veteran seamer Jenny Gunn claimed 4 for 15•Getty Images

A stunning bowling performance from the evergreen Jenny Gunn saw Northern Diamonds ease their way to victory over rivals Thunder and secure qualification for Finals Day in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.Gunn, 35, rolled back the years in taking 4 for 15 for Diamonds as the hosts were restricted to 90 for 9 from their 20 overs, with the modest target never looking enough to prevent a win for the visitors.Thunder had got off to a decent start with an opening partnership of 20 between Georgie Boyce and Daisy Mullan hinting at better things to come before Rachel Slater struck with the wickets of Boyce and Threlkeld. Laura Marshall helped progress the score to 47 until she was bowled by Linsey Smith for 14 with Mullan falling to Katie Levick for the same score in the same way soon afterwards. From then on it was all about Gunn as the former England seamer decimated the Thunder middle order, with the dangerous Kate Cross proving the vital wicket after she had scored successive boundaries off Alex MacDonald.Laura Jackson fell to a sharp caught-and-bowled chance for Gunn for 8 with Alice Dyson finding skipper Hollie Armitage at long-on off the very next ball. Gunn’s next delivery was hit for four by Danielle Collins but the veteran bowler made it three wickets in four balls when Collins was caught by Slater off her second delivery faced.Thunder’s fight was done and they quickly subsided, with Smith claiming her second wicket when Alex Hartley was stumped without scoring. The home side’s fortunes failed to improve with the ball as Diamonds as openers Leah Dobson and Bess Heath set about the Thunder attack in powerful fashion. The pair had eased their way to 46 off 39 balls when Dobson offered an easy chance to Laura Jackson off Dyson and departed for 20 which brought the ominous figure of Lauren Winfield-Hill to the crease. With the hosts looking increasingly ragged in the field the victory never looked in doubt and despite Hannah Jones bowling Winfield-Hill for just 5, Heath was able to reach her half-century before the eight-wicket win was secured in the 13th over.

Sold for £18m: Spurs struck gold selling Poch signing who’s now worth £500k

In recent months, Tottenham Hotspur’s activity in the transfer market has handed boss Ange Postecoglou the best possible chance of cementing the club’s place as a top-four Premier League side this season.

Since his appointment last summer, numerous key first-team members have been added, helping Spurs in their battle to secure consistent Champions League football in North London.

James Maddison joined the side in a £40m deal from Leicester City after their relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 season – with the midfielder enjoying a successful first 12 months under Postecoglou.

The Englishman has registered a total of 18 combined goals and assists since his big-money transfer, providing a huge attacking threat from a deeper position on the field.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has also impressed after arriving last summer, nailing down the number one spot, making 49 appearances and keeping 11 clean sheets in the process.

However, despite the recent impressive signings from the club’s recruitment team, they have also enjoyed success in the transfer market during previous years, signing players who managed to have a huge impact on the first team.

Tottenham’s summer transfer window in 2015

After finishing fifth in the 2014/15 season, Spurs had the task of recruiting well during the off-season to push and secure a Champions League spot in the following season.

Owner Daniel Levy spent big that summer, forking out £22m for the signature of winger Heung-min Son from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen – a bargain given his impact in North London since his transfer.

The South Korean star has since registered 164 goals in his 415 appearances for the Lilywhites, often being the player to create carnage in the final third after Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich last summer.

Toby Alderweireld also arrived during the same transfer window, joining for only £11.5m from Atlético Madrid – in a move to help bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s backline.

The deal was undoubtedly a successful one, with the Belgian forming an excellent partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen and making 236 appearances during his six years in the capital.

However, another defensive reinforcement was added in the form of Austrian Kevin Wimmer, joining for just £4m from German side FC Koln on a five-year contract.

Undoubtedly, he was seen as one for the future but was unable to dislodge any of the aforementioned duo – restricting him to just 31 appearances at White Hart Lane.

He only lasted two years at the club, before he was sold to fellow Premier League side Stoke City in the summer of 2017 – a deal that proved to be an excellent one from a Spurs viewpoint.

Kevin Wimmer’s market value in 2024

His move to join the Potters saw Spurs bank £18m, subsequently making a £14m profit despite his lack of appearances – with his form at Stoke failing to demonstrate such a high transfer figure.

Kevin Wimmer

The now 31-year-old only managed 19 appearances under boss Mark Hughes, before three separate loan spells away from the Bet365 Stadium before eventually leaving the club in 2021 with the Potters now a Championship outfit.

Seven years on from his transfer away from North London, his market value has continued to plummet, with the Austrian now plying his trade for Slovak Bratislava in Slovakia.

He featured against Manchester City in the Champions League this season, but it hasn’t stopped his decline in value, with Wimmer now only valued at £500k as per Transfermarkt.

It’s positive to see a former player finally looking settled after a torrid few years after a failed transfer, but from a financial perspective, the hierarchy certainly made the right call in selling the defender.

His lack of impact at Spurs made it a no-brainer to cash in on the Austrian defender, making a hefty profit on a fringe player – allowing for further investment in key first-team players down the line.
