Board finances report major dip in reserves after £100m shortfall in 2020

Ian Watmore, the ECB’s chairman, has announced his ambition to “help the game repair its Covid-inflicted wounds” via a business plan that will reduce the “unsustainable levels of debt” within English cricket. The ECB reported a drop in group reserves to £2.2 million – just over 1% of turnover, compared to a desired 40% – and a pre-tax loss of £16m for the year ending January 31, 2020 on Tuesday, following its annual general meeting.”Covid-19 has weakened the underlying financial health of the whole game – professional cricket in particular – leading to income falls, cash-flow squeezes, deferred investments, downsizing, an escalation in debt, all against an uncertain global and domestic economic backdrop,” Watmore wrote in his blog. “This has led to concerns of survival, stability and sustainability of many entities within the game, and hence the entire ‘eco-system’ of the game as we know it.”In its financial statements for 2020-21, the ECB confirmed that revenue losses amounted to “more than £100m compared to what had been expected to be received” and highlighted the postponement of the Hundred and the staging of biosecure international cricket as key factors. The ECB reported that overall group reserves were down to £2.2m, down from £17.1m last year and £73.1m in 2016. With turnover of £207m – a fall of £21m from the previous year – reserves are £80m below the desired level of 40%.Cost-cutting measures last year included stopping some planned investment, furloughing staff, and pay reductions, as well as reducing head count from 389 to 331 through a redundancy programme.Watmore also revealed his intention to “work with the game to create a business plan for cricket through modelling scenarios for the future” for the years 2022-31, when the next cycle of international cricket concludes.Related

“This exercise will shine a light on where the major issues exist, and at what scale, and the game will consider options and ideas, from the simple to the more radical,” Watmore wrote. “The overall aim is to give the whole game a shared big picture over the long term, and the financial and business plan to help the game repair its Covid-inflicted wounds as it moves to a better, more sustainable future.”Watmore highlighted five areas: growing the grassroots game; ensuring “exciting and accessible cricket” is played in “modern and digitally connected” stadia; creating sustainable business models in the professional game; reducing and/or recapitalising the “unsustainable levels of debt”; and investing in “growth areas like the Hundred, the Blast, streaming and the women’s game”.Watmore’s plan is to model a “baseline” option before a July meeting between the ECB and its stakeholders, with “various ‘what-if’ analysis” due to be completed before an end-of-project assembly in November.”The financial challenges we face are significant, but I believe that by working through this together, we can find the right answers to ensure we have a sustainable business plan for the future and deliver on the ambition of growing the game,” he wrote. The ECB’s board also ratified the appointment of Baroness Valerie Amos as an independent non-executive director, succeeding Delia Bushell.

Rangers change their minds about selling Tavernier after Gers fan backlash

Rangers have now changed their mind on the future of their highest earner once more amid fan backlash, according to a fresh report, underlining the uncertainty surrounding Philippe Clement's squad this season.

Rangers start season slowly

After just four games in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers sit five points behind early pace setters Celtic and Aberdeen. The Glasgow giants drew their opening game in uninspiring fashion, and the points gap to their Old Firm rivals was extended as the gulf in class between the pair was made abundantly clear last weekend.

It summed up a torrid start to the season for Clement's side, who were also knocked out of the Champions League in controversial fashion after Jefte saw a questionable second yellow card against Dynamo Kyiv, who went on to score twice to knock out their Scottish opponents.

The international break has therefore arrived at a perfect time for Rangers, giving them a chance to regroup and seek improvement across the remainder of the campaign to prevent their early season slump turning into a season to forget.

But instead of a united front, the Gers have been back and forth over the future of club captain James Tavernier amid reported interest from Turkey, whose transfer window does not shut until Friday 13th September. Now, it appears that the club have done yet another U-turn on his future.

Is Tavernier staying at Rangers?

Selling the club's captain outside of the transfer window with no way of signing a replacement until January never seemed like a smart move on the surface, yet that is precisely what Rangers were willing to do according to reports just last week, which claimed they had changed their minds from earlier this year.

The defender, who is into the final two years of his £30,000 a week deal at Ibrox, has been the subject of interest from Turkish sides throughout the summer, but Rangers had previously rejected any offers

Just days after deciding to part ways with the Englishman though, it appears that the club have done yet another u-turn. That comes as Football Insider claim the Scots "will block an exit" this week, because "they have no opportunity to replace him". They add that Rangers have "responded to fan backlash" and have now insisted he is not for sale.

That is set to be a different story in January, however, with the report adding that "a sale could be reconsidered in January if the right offer arrives".

The 32-year-old has played every minute of the season so far, grabbing two assists in four appearances, though he has been criticised for his defensive work despite his attacking returns.

New-ball yorker, swinging in – how Wahab Riaz trapped Babar Azam for first-ball duck

Wahab Riaz trapped Babar Azam lbw for a first-ball duck•Pakistan Super League

Peshawar Zalmi’s two new boys Hazratullah Zazai and Abrar Ahmed may have caught the eye in a statement-making thumping of champions Karachi Kings but the win was set up by a rare bout of new-ball swing. And pace. The example was set by captain Wahab Riaz with a searing first-over dismissal of Babar Azam before Sameen Gul picked up two in two in the third over – all three deliveries hooping big. Azam’s failure was a rare one for the Pakistan captain this season but so too was the method of Riaz’s success: a new-ball yorker, swinging in.”In Abu Dhabi, the ball swings a lot under lights and it’s not just for me but everyone who is bowling with pace,” Riaz told ESPNcricinfo. “The first three to four overs are crucial and that is where everyone is trying to extract maximum advantage given the dew later on. Mostly, teams have been struggling against the new ball and losing a bulk of wickets early.”With a new hard ball and pace, you will get everything if you bowl in right area. I had worked out a plan and wanted to attack Babar from the very first ball, bringing the ball in to him using the blind spot [the left-arm over angle creates]. But once the game goes on, after five overs or so, the swing is reduced and batsmen control back.”The good work of Riaz and Gul was built upon by Ahmed, playing for Zalmi for the first time this season and in only his fourth T20 game since his debut in the PSL four seasons ago. Ahmed is a rare breed for Pakistan: a finger-spinner who can bowl the carrom ball; his 3 for 14 were the first wickets he’s taken at this level. He had caused a flutter of excitement when he emerged in the 2016-17 season for the Karachi Kings – then coach Mickey Arthur saw him potentially as an answer to Pakistan’s middle-overs bowling – but back injuries have kept him out of the game until last year. The other new arrival, Zazai, then tore into the total, a remarkable 26-ball 63 on his PSL debut taking Zalmi to 99 in the ninth over, when he was dismissed. His fifty, off 17 balls, was the joint-fastest in the PSL. He took 21 off a Mohammad Amir over, and then 20 by himself off Aamer Yamin. The first six off the latter went outside the ground.”When my shots started coming off early on, I thought I need to cash in as it’s my day today,” Zazai said after the game. “I liked all the sixes I hit today but the first one off Aamer Yamin was probably my favourite.”The win took Zalmi to joint-second with the Lahore Qalandars, with some fresh impetus with Ahmed and Zazai in the squad now.

Arsenal and Arteta could now start "unique" 17-year-old against Tottenham

There are now whispers that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could actually start a highly-rated 17-year-old starlet in the North London Derby this weekend.

Team news ahead of Tottenham vs Arsenal on Sunday

Their first game back from the international break could hardly be a tougher test, with a trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium awaiting an Arsenal side who are pretty short of numbers right now.

Arteta will be without star player Declan Rice through suspension after the England international picked up two yellow cards in their last Premier League game against Brighton, and he won't be their only midfield absentee either.

Summer signing Mikel Merino has been sidelined by a shoulder injury, and may not feature for Arsenal until after the October international break. The Spaniard fractured his deltoid after a collision with Gabriel Magalhaes in training at London Colney, with Merino now forced to wait for his full Gunners debut after joining from Real Sociedad.

Fellow new recruit Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt for Arsenal's next game too, after the Italy international sustained a calf injury on international duty against France. The biggest worry of all, though, revolves around club captain Martin Odegaard.

Odegaard looks certain to miss the Tottenham game after he twisted his ankle in Norway's 2-1 win over Austria on Monday, with supporters now waiting for official confirmation on the severity of his injury.

This series of hammer blows means Arteta is planning to drop Kai Havertz back into midfield, despite the German shining in a makeshift centre-forward role. It is believed Raheem Sterling could make his Arsenal debut this weekend in a false-nine role, but the good news for Arteta is that Gabriel Jesus could be available to play against Tottenham following his comeback from fitness issues.

Arteta could start Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri against Tottenham

As Arteta ponders how best to set up his team in one of their biggest games of the season, BBC journalist Mark Chapman has now shared rumours he's heard that Arsenal could start teenage talent Ethan Nwaneri against Tottenham on Sunday, which would come as a bold move.

“They have some issues in midfield Arsenal, Declan Rice is suspended, Martin Odegaard picked up an injury during the week, their signing in the summer, Merino is already injured. So there are these rumours that they may start a 17-year-old, Ethan Nwaneri," said Chapman on the BBC Planet Premier League Podcast, relayed by Caught Offside.

The 17-year-old has played in two Premier League games, first making his debut with a one-minute cameo against Brentford two years ago. Since then, Arteta has handed him the nod on just one other occasion – with the attacker playing 13 minutes during Arsenal's thumping 6-0 win at West Ham last campaign.

Following Emile Smith Rowe's £35 million move to Fulham in the summer, journalist Charles Watts has tipped Arsenal to play Nwaneri far more often.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri

“Ethan Nwaneri is someone Arsenal fans will have been aware of for some time now and he really caught the eye for England Under-17s at this summer’s European Championships,” Watts said to CaughtOffside.

“So what next for the latest homegrown wonderkid to come out of Hale End? I think we’ll see Nwaneri stay at Arsenal next season and become more of a fixture in the first-team. I can’t see him being a regular, but I think we’ll see Mikel Arteta start to give him some minutes to ensure he continues to develop at the rate that Arsenal want him to.

“There are certain players that you look at and think that they can skip going out on loan and move straight into the first-team picture. Bukayo Saka was one and I think Nwaneri is another.

“If Smith Rowe goes, it could be the perfect chance to promote Nwaneri. He’s such a talent and it’s really important that Arsenal leave him a pathway to continue to develop."

The Hundred is set to lose more big-name players as the competition battles to compete with international schedules and bubble fatigue. Days after it emerged that David Warner, Marcus Stoinis and Sophie Devine had pulled out, ESPNcricinfo understands that Kagiso Rabada is also withdrawing.Rabada, the South Africa fast bowler who had signed for Manchester Originals, is currently involved in a Test series in the Caribbean. The team is then scheduled to play six limited-overs matches (three T20Is and three ODIs) in Ireland in a tour that finishes on July 25, the same day as Manchester Originals’ first home fixture.Related

While he would then potentially have a few weeks before his next assignment, it is understood Rabada is opting for a break instead of appearing in the Hundred, for which he had been drafted in the £100,000 (US$140,000) bracket.Lockie Ferguson, the New Zealand fast bowler, is to join Manchester Originals as Rabada’s replacement. An ECB spokesperson said: “We are thrilled to welcome a player of the quality of Lockie Ferguson to The Hundred. It’s sad news that Kagiso will not take part this year but the schedule and challenges around international travel due to Covid remain an issue for some overseas players.”The tournament has had some encouraging news, though. While the new government timetable for the lifting of Covid-related restrictions is a blow to the county game – it means that the T20 Blast programme will not offer its usual financial windfall – it might work to the advantage of the Hundred. The tournament starts on July 21, just two days after the anticipated release of restrictions on July 19.
