Southampton now targeting "great" £40,000-a-week in-demand midfielder

Hoping to add to the Premier League experience that they've already brought to Russell Martin's side this summer, Southampton are now reportedly eyeing a midfielder who's expected to leave his current club.

Southampton transfer news

The Saints have already, of course, added a Premier League veteran in the form of Adam Lallana, who returned to his boyhood club in quite the full circle moment. Since then, Flynn Downes, Ben Brereton Diaz and others have followed through the St Mary's door to hand Martin a major boost ahead of his maiden campaign in England's top flight.

Contact has been been made over a summer switch.

With their opening day clash against Newcastle United just nine days away now, the Saints are seemingly yet to conclude their summer business, having been linked to the likes of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from KAA Gent and Brighton & Hove Albion's Facundo Buonanotte in recent days.

A deal that may be more likely is one for a midfield reinforcement. According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Southampton are eyeing a move to sign Oliver Skipp, who is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The 23-year-old has been the subject of interest from all three newly-promoted clubs, giving those at St Mary's an early chance to get one over on their rivals.

Earning a reported £40,000-a-week, Skipp would instantly become one of the highest-earners at Southampton, below just Joe Aribo, Adam Armstrong, Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens, whilst sitting alongside Carlos Alcaraz. So, it's a deal that the Saints will have to be convinced about making, that's for sure.

Tottenham's Oliver Skipp

Skipp arguably represents the ideal signing, however. He still has plenty of potential to unlock at 23 years old, but already has more than enough Premier League experience to play an important role under Russell Martin.

"Great" Skipp can partner Downes

Hoping to find the formula for Premier League survival, Martin could welcome Skipp to work alongside Downes at the heart of his Southampton side, allowing the latter to pull the strings more going forward. The defensive work of the Spurs midfielder would provide a crucial platform for the likes of Lallana and Armstrong to thrive in the final third.

With just 707 minutes played in the Premier League last season, there's no doubt that Skipp needs a move away from Spurs this summer. He simply cannot afford another campaign watching on from the sidelines.

He will hope that a move away results in the realisation of the potential that Antonio Conte once spotted, telling the Evening Standard during his time in North London: "This player is a very young. He has really a lot of space for improvement. He played with great intensity, great passion, with heart, with soul. I think it was important because, for me, he doesn’t care if he’s only 21-years-old, who deserves to play,”

Stevie Eskinazi defies Gloucestershire's attack in rare bright spot for Middlesex's batting

Batsman 48 not out heading into final day at Cheltenham with visitors three down in fourth innings

Paul Edwards07-Jul-2021

Stephen Eskinazi of Middlesex bats during the County Championship Division Two match against Lancashire at Lord’s•Getty Images

For two days, so we have been told, Cheltenham has dodged the showers. This attributes a degree of agility to the College Ground that even so magical a location might struggle to achieve but it is still a fair reflection of our good luck. While other matches in this round were hosed upon ‘big style’ on Monday and Tuesday Gloucestershire and Middlesex’s cricketers went about their business more or less unimpeded. Such splendid good fortune is no more than Cheltenham and its staff deserve but it came to a wet end this morning when a couple of determined downpours prevented any play before luncheon. The gruffer critics, recalling Middlesex’s disintegration on Tuesday afternoon, observed that a few showers at least offered the prospect of this game lasting into its fourth morning. Sadly there was brutal justice in that view. One of the tougher joys of the county programme is its insistence that a side’s capacity for resistance should be tested over six months and there were suggestions in the visitors’ first innings that one or two batsmen were resigned to a grim fate. Six defeats in eight games do that to cricketers. The job of the coach and captain at such times is to convince their mentally battered players that a seventh defeat is not pre-ordained, even at points in the season when they have mislaid their powers of resistance. Put simply, therefore, when Middlesex began their pursuit of 420 to win this game in the middle of this third afternoon their players had to believe a rot could be stopped.Related

Two players’ innings suggested the message had been received. After both openers had been removed inside the first six overs, Stevie Eskinazi and Peter Handscomb, each of them with just one first-class half-century to their credit this season, defied Gloucestershire’s confident attack for 30 overs adding only 48 runs in the process but at least showing the kind of fight their side has frequently lacked this summer. The cricket was absorbing as James Bracey rotated his six-man attack intelligently, never over-bowling Dan Worrall and Matt Taylor, his main threats, but keeping all his bowlers fresh, secure in the knowledge that this game has another day to go.Handscomb, while he is no Hashim Amla, was unconcerned by his failure to score freely and went 45 minutes without adding to his 13 runs. However, having pushed a single to midwicket, he fell leg before to Worrall and it was left to Eskinazi and Daryl Mitchell to resist Gloucestershire’s bowlers for another hour. They did this in relative comfort and that rich period of play also featured the two huge sixes that Mitchell whacked over long-on when he came down the pitch to the off-spinner Ollie Price. All the same this was classic County Championship fare, old-school cricket, if you will. The fact that it took place at Cheltenham made the vintage even richer. And there will be cricket here tomorrow when Eskinazi will resume his innings on 48 not out.The cultured and discriminating defence offered by Middlesex’s middle-order was all the more vital given the early dismissal of their openers. First to go was Josh de Caires, who punched his third and fourth balls through midwicket for pleasant twos but was then dropped by Glenn Phillips at first slip off his sixth ball but caught by the same fielder off his tenth when attempting a drive. Given that de Caires nearly ran himself out at the non-striker’s end in the over between his first escape and final snaring, it would be fair to describe his second innings in big school as nervy yet even this was understandable given that he was facing Worrall, whose sponsorship by a firm of funeral directors is very fitting. But it was Matt Taylor, a slightly more civilised fellow and consequently receiving financial support from auctioneers, who took the next wicket when he brought one back in to have Sam Robson leg before for nought. There was the slightest suspicion the ball pitched outside leg but this did not really justify Robson leaning on his bat and delaying his departure with the air of a man visited by undeserved malignity. That, though, is what happens when the bottom has dropped out of your grocery bag too many times in one summer. We then settled into a wonderful few hours during which no home supporters barracked the batsmen and few spectators left the College Ground. All the same, the dot-stuffed tension of Middlesex’s innings had been preceded by a far more carefree 85 minutes’ cricket in which Gloucestershire lost their last four wickets in scoring a further 84 runs. The highlight of this session of play was a fine seventh-wicket partnership of 65 in 17 overs between Ollie and Tom Price, a stand in which both brothers played a series of attractive strokes. Ollie was eventually caught behind off Tim Murtagh for 33 but Tom ended the innings unbeaten on 35 and the pair’s value to Gloucestershire is plainly enhanced by their useful bowling. There was no value in the Prices simply occupying the crease – the lead was already 345 when their partnership began – but their self-possession was impressive and somehow emblematic of a county that is enjoying a prolonged and deserved revival in their fortunes. One does not need to hail from Prestbury or Painswick to be pleased by that.

Mohammad Rizwan isn't done yet, and South Africa still can't stay away from his hitting zone

Heinrich Klaasen’s side did enough to be proud of themselves, and had a big positive in the form of Aiden Markram

At a time when the vast majority of people have not seen others regularly, one person has overstayed his welcome over the last three months from the South African point of view. With two hundreds, two fifties, and two forties in nine innings, and a T20I average of 135.50 in 2021, Mohammad Rizwan has been ever-present, and shows no signs of having had his fill.It was Rizwan, who scored 115* to set South Africa a target of 370 in the Rawalpindi Test, which Pakistan won by 95 runs. It was Rizwan, who blitzed his way to a first T20I hundred to set up a three-run win in the first match in Lahore. And though South Africa kept him quiet in the ODIs, today, it was Rizwan’s 74* off 50 balls that helped Pakistan to their highest successful T20I run chase. This time, he got a little lucky upfront. He was dropped in the second over when he hadn’t yet scored, when George Linde put down a difficult return catch.Related

Then, he got luckier and was gifted deliveries in his scoring zone. Sisanda Magala, on debut, began by angling the ball down the leg side, where, later, South Africa captain Heinrich Klaasen noted Rizwan likes getting the ball. “He hits in a different angle to a normal power-hitter, so, for us, it’s to stay out of his hitting zone, which is quite a lot on the leg side,” Klaasen said.Rizwan scored 58 of his 74 runs on the leg side, including both his sixes and seven of his nine fours. He took advantage of any delivery that was angled in from off stump and he did not seem to be rushed in his approach at any stage. To start with, though, Rizwan had decided he could give himself a sighter, something he picked up after watching Fakhar Zaman score 193 in the second ODI at this ground. “It was a bit of a tricky track in the second innings. Fakhar’s ODI innings was on my mind today, on how to play on this surface by taking some time early on,” he said. His first eight balls brought just four runs before he cleared the front leg to hit another newcomer, Lizaad Williams, over long-on for four. It was another five balls before he found the rope again and continued to pace his innings to meet the situation. Rizwan stayed calm even when Babar Azam was dismissed in the powerplay, and when the required run-rate climbed to over ten an over. He left Zaman to take on Linde, before doing so himself after the halfway mark. Even when Mohammad Hafeez was stumped off Tabraiz Shamsi, and Pakistan needed 79 runs off 41 balls, Rizwan believed they were still in it. “International cricket is always about pressure,” he said. “The message was coming from the dugout to keep going and I knew that we have power-hitters in the middle order for the last overs.”While South Africa scored just 37 runs off the last five overs. Pakistan needed 57 runs in the same period. Beuran Hendricks started that quarter of the innings with two wickets in two balls. But then, he lost his lengths completely and bowled four full-tosses in a row at the start of the 18th over for Rizwan to crack the chase. From off stump, he drove Hendricks over mid-off, midwicket and behind square to score 14 runs off the first three balls and leave the rest of the death bowlers with too much to do.While there are gaps between the talk and the walk, South Africa need not be too hard on themselves•AFP/Getty Images

In the end, South Africa might ask themselves if Hendricks was the right choice to use so close to the end of the innings, especially as Klaasen acknowledged there were probably other candidates: “Magala and Lizaad are two probably our two best yorker bowlers.”Magala bowled the penultimate over and Williams the final one, but Magala had an over in hand and Andile Phehlukwayo, who has been used at the death in ODIs, had two. The problem for Klaasen was not the personnel or the plans. “We just need to execute,” he said. While there are gaps between the talk and the walk, South Africa need not be too hard on themselves. They are playing with second – and in some cases, third – choice players thanks to the IPL and injuries, and they still managed to be competitive. There are selection questions – such as why Kyle Verreynne didn’t play in this game – but there are also experiments which are slowly starting to work. Like Aiden Markram. This is only the fourth time in his last 11 international innings that Markram has gone past 39 and he played with a freedom that has been lacking previously, particularly in the one-day series. There, Markram looked like a million dollars but found ways of getting out just as he got in. Here, he got in and made it count. He pierced the off side in front of and behind square with drives off the front and back foot, and would be disappointed that he didn’t bat through the second half of the innings. But he has made a statement about his attempt to belong. “He has been fighting hard to get back into this white-ball side,” Klaasen said. “In the one-day series, he needed a few runs just to kick on and not get out after good starts. Today, he got that.”Similarly, this was Klaasen’s first international score of over 17 this summer, and first since his difficult journey through Covid-19. Klaasen has been burdened with captaining the depleted T20I side in two series and so perhaps it should not be surprising that he hasn’t been able to build on his Player-of-the-Series performances against Australia last year. In this match, Klaasen showed some authority, with 50 off 24 balls, with four sixes, three of them off short balls that he sent over the leg side. Interesting angles, maybe.

Lucas Moura de volta ao São Paulo em 2022? Empresário do atleta dá detalhes sobre possível retorno

Bad news for Soucek: West Ham holding talks to sign "complete" midfielder

It's early days yet, but West Ham United are showing signs of promise under the leadership of new head coach Julen Lopetegui, who defeated Crystal Palace in his second Premier League match in charge.

West Ham fizzled out under David Moyes last season and have backed the freshly-arrived Spaniard to the hilt, spending over £120m on first-team signings.

There may yet be room for one or two more, however, and with James Ward-Prowse reportedly on Nottingham Forest's shortlist as the window enters its final week, an exciting midfielder edges closer to east London.

West Ham transfer news

According to Sky Sports' Dharmeth Sheth, West Ham are locked in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain for versatile midfielder Carlos Soler, with "talks ongoing over the fee and structure".

PSG midfielder Carlos Soler

Last week, Fabrizio Romano claimed that the Hammers are "leading the race", but that other clubs are also keen. PSG want a sum in the ballpark of £20m to let the 27-year-old go but are willing to discuss a loan package.

Where Carlos Soler would fit into West Ham's team

A key point: Lopetegui's tactical set-up is flexible and would benefit from another midfielder who operates across a range of areas. Soler, indeed, has actually been hailed as the "complete midfielder" by former Valencia star Curro Torres.

The Spaniard is one of the most fluid midfielders around, and he could benefit from jumping across the Channel and plying his trade somewhere anew, having only started 26 Ligue 1 fixtures since signing for PSG from Spanish side Valencia for €20m (about £17m) in 2022.

Still, he's potent and would offer an extra goalscoring dimension to ensure that Lopetegui's Irons stray away from becoming one-dimensional, predictable.

PSG player Carlos Soler

Indeed, as per FBref, Soler ranks among the top 11% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 19% for assists, the top 18% for passes attempted and the top 10% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

A ball-playing specialist with one eye for goal and the other for an assist, Soler would be a credit to his new-look West Ham team, perhaps even proving to displace in-form Tomas Soucek in the starting line-up, on the whole.

Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen celebrate for West Ham

That might be an unpopular take: Soucek is one of those clutch players that always seems to find circles of space in the right moments, an innate predatory instinct if you will.

The Czech Republic international, 29, netted ten times over all competitions last year and has been praised in the past as "one of those players who turns up in big moments" by pundit Joe Cole.

However, the towering 6 foot 3 titan has also lost 60% of his ground duels this season and could find that his role is performed to a better standard through Soler, even if he has started the new term in goalscoring touch.

Soler is silky and inventive, and while he has an eye for goal, he can also influence play from deep and dictate passing passages. Should West Ham go ahead with the move, it might prove to be bad news for Soucek, who would find himself playing more of a bit-part role.

Though, really, would that be the worst thing in the world? Lopetegui would gain a dynamic new option to better implement his tactical style, while Soucek would still earn opportunities off the bench to inflict damage on United's opposition.

Man City eye huge double move for £16m-a-year star and "sensational" winger

Manchester City are said to be interested in signing two players from the same club next year, according to a new report.

The Blues have just come out of what was a quiet summer transfer window for them, as they added just two players to their already very talented squad. The lack of activity hasn’t stopped them from making another strong start to the season, as they have won three out of three so far.

Manchester City are leading the race to sign a player Pep Guardiola loves.

ByBrett Worthington Sep 5, 2024 Man City keen on Ousmane Diomande

It was clear that City and Pep Guardiola weren’t going to do transfer business for the sake of it. They were only going to bring players into the squad that they needed and felt would improve their team.

So, while the transfer window has just shut, it looks as though the Premier League side already have their eyes on what business they may do in 2025. It was reported on Wednesday that Man City have an interest in signing Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP. The report states that Guardiola is a huge admirer of the defender, and they could look to beat the strong competition for his signature by making a move for him next year.

Diomande, who has been with Sporting since January 2023, has so far played 60 times for the club, as his career has progressed significantly in the last 18 months. The Portuguese side would obviously like to keep hold of the centre-back for a little longer, but they will also understand the market, and it is said that they would be looking for €40 million, which is roughly £34 million. As well as eyeing a deal for Diomande in 2025, Man City also have their eye on two other players.

The report states that the Premier League side plans to strengthen in midfield next year, and they have identified the duo as two players who can do that.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

Musiala is considered one of the brightest prospects in world football, and his ability to score goals and create chances has put him on the radar of not only City but also Liverpool and Barcelona. The Germany international has been described as “sensational” by football writer Raphael Honigstein.

Meanwhile, Kimmich, who is said to earn €19.5 million a year, (about £16 million), is seen as the ideal replacement for Rodri, who could be a target for Real Madrid next summer, although City are also keen on tying the Spaniard down to a new contract.

Guardiola has worked with Kimmich before during their time at Bayern Munich, and therefore, his adaptation to the City team could be quick and effective. The report goes on to add that Man City’s financial power could be decisive in closing both transfers and ensuring they continue to compete at the highest level.
