Baroda’s apex council said that Hooda has caused “disrepute to the organisation”

Baroda allrounder Deepak Hooda has been suspended for the rest of the ongoing domestic season on grounds of “indiscipline.” The decision was taken on Thursday by the apex council of the Baroda Cricket Association. On the eve of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Hooda had left the Baroda squad after accusing state captain Krunal Pandya of “bullying” and using abusive language. In its initial response, the BCA had reprimanded him, saying Hooda had put “himself above the team.”Related

Hooda accuses Krunal Pandya of 'bullying'
On Thursday, BCA secretary Ajit Lele confirmed Hooda had been suspended for the rest of the season. “The Apex Council decided to suspend him for indiscipline,” Lele said. As part of the review, the BCA had sought clarifications from both Pandya as well as head coach and the team manager. “It was decided by the Apex council that Deepak Hooda has caused disrepute to the organisation and will not be considered to represent Baroda in the current domestic season,” the BCA said in a media release.Irfan Pathan, the former India allrounder and Baroda captain, had said BCA’s first response against Hooda was both “shocking and disheartening”. According to Pathan, with teams operating out of bio-secure bubbles, it was important to pay attention to the “mental health” of players and incidents such as Hooda’s could have “adverse” effect on the player.
Chelsea secured their first win of pre-season in the early hours of this morning, beating Mexican side CF America 3-0 in the USA.
Goals from Christopher Nkunku, Marc Guiu and Noni Madueke settled the game for Enzo Maresca’s side – who won his first game in charge at the third attempt after a draw and a defeat against Wrexham and Celtic, respectively.
The Blues claimed the win without midfielder Conor Gallagher, who appears to be edging ever closer to a move to join Spanish side Atlético Madrid after journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed he had rejected a new deal at Stamford Bridge.
Conor-Gallagher-Chelsea-Carabao-Cup-Final
The potential deal could see the Blues secure a £34m transfer fee for the 24-year-old who came through the academy after joining the club at the age of eight.
However, they already have a ready-made replacement for the English international, after his excellent display for the Blues in the pre-season during the early hours of the morning.
Roméo Lavia’s stats against CF America
After joining Chelsea from Southampton for £58m last summer, midfielder Roméo Lavia endured an awful run of injuries during his debut season in west London, making just one appearance – featuring for a total of 32 minutes.
However, he’s recently been on the comeback trail, working his way towards a first-team return, potentially having the impact of a new signing given his lack of minutes last season.
His display on Thursday morning demonstrated the quality he possesses, potentially having a huge impact at Stamford Bridge during the 2024/25 campaign.
The Belgian featured for 63 minutes during the victory, completing 32 passes at a completion rate of 91% – only losing possession six times during his time on the pitch.

He also made a key contribution in attacking areas, winning a penalty before Frenchman Nkunku stepped up to score his third goal of pre-season for the Blues.
Lavia excelled defensively, winning two tackles and five duels during his hour performance – staking his claim for a regular first-team spot under Maresca this season.
He was subsequently handed a 7.5/10 match rating by journalist Bobby Vincent – with Ben Jacobs stating that the former Southampton looked “sharp” during his first outing during the tour of the US.
His display will have Chelsea fans a reason to be positive, with the youngster finally able to hit the ground running after a torrid time on the sidelines, also allowing them to forget about Gallagher should he move to Spain this summer.
Why Lavia could allow Maresca to forget about Gallagher
After the news of Gallagher’s contract rejection, it’s clear he wants a new start away from his boyhood club, with a move to Atléti expected to be completed in the next few days.
He was a crucial player under former boss Mauricio Pochettino last season, featuring in 37 of the 38 Premier League matches, registering 12 goal contributions in the process.
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
The Englishman would leave a huge hole in the Chelsea midfield, but Lavia’s display against CF America could allow for an easy transition between the two players at the heart of Maresca’s squad.
He’s previously shown his ability to thrive in the Premier League, as demonstrated during his time on the South Coast with Southampton – featuring 29 times in the 2022/23 season, which prompted the Blues’ desire to spend big on the Belgian.
Although it’s only a pre-season clash, he’s shown he has the quality to slot straight into the Chelsea midfield, preventing the club from spending big once more on another talent to bolster the squad.
Lavia has the ability to give Chelsea the advantage in their hunt for a Champions League place – whilst allowing him to develop his game further and prove why the club paid £58m for his services.

Nesta sexta-feira, 2.139 torcedores estiveram presentes no Estádio Nilton Santos.
Jimmy Adams said that fitness requirements had to be strict as four players missed out on the squad

Sunil Narine is still getting his game to a level where he would feel comfortable playing for West Indies•BCCI
Sunil Narine’s absence from West Indies’ T20I squad to play Sri Lanka next month came after he told the selectors that he was “not ready” to return to international cricket.Narine played four games for Trinidad and Tobago in the Super50 Cup – though missed Saturday’s final through injury – but has not played for West Indies in any format since August 2019. He was placed on a ‘warning list’ amid suspicions of an illegal bowling action during last year’s IPL, but has since been cleared to bowl.”Sunil Narine had indicated earlier that he is not ready to return to international cricket,” Roger Harper, Cricket West Indies’ lead selector, said. “He’s still fine-tuning his game and getting himself ready. From that perspective, he wasn’t considered for this series.”In Narine’s absence, Akeal Hosein, Kevin Sinclair and Fabian Allen will be West Indies’ main spin options in the T20I series against Sri Lanka, which starts on Wednesday, March 3. Harper confirmed that Gudakesh Motie, the left-arm spinner who was the Super50’s leading wicket-taker going into Saturday’s final, had been considered for selection but said that the selection panel wanted to give Hosein another opportunity after his impressive performances in Bangladesh.Related

“He [Motie] certainly had an outstanding season and drew a lot of attention to himself,” Harper said. “But we must recall that we had just selected Akeal Hosein for the tour of Bangladesh. He acquitted himself very well and he’s a left-arm spinner, so naturally we continued with him in this series.”You may have also noticed that we included young Kevin Sinclair who is another spinner, but he’s an offspinner. What he offers is, if needed, some variety and a different option. That was the reason that Motie was not selected and we chose Sinclair, [but] certainly Motie is at the forefront of our thoughts.”West Indies will be without four players – Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell, Shimron Hetmyer and Oshane Thomas – during the white-ball fixtures against Sri Lanka, all of whom failed to reach the minimum fitness standards agreed with CWI. Hetmyer’s absence was a particular surprise after he hit 113 off 80 balls in the Super50 semi-final against the Windward Islands, but Jimmy Adams, CWI’s director of cricket, said there was no room for discretion.”The policy asks for a minimum standard in certain aspects of fitness testing,” Adams said. “It’s pretty simple, and it’s something all the players are aware of: failure to get to [the minimum standard] makes them unavailable for selection.Shimron Hetmyer was one of the players not to meet fitness requirements•BCCI
“As is best practice around the world, there are going to be times when players for different reasons might be unable or incapable of achieving minimum standards across either the whole battery of tests or certain aspects of it, and there are exemptions that are given to these players.”The four main areas that are considered would be age, individual physiological limitations, their injury history and their training history. This is standard across many high-performance environments and we’re no different. There are quite a few players at the moment who have been exempted under one of these four headings. It’s not a secret. It’s been communicated to players.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
“This is not a conversation that we like having with players. For me, the minimum standard isn’t something that should apply to an international player. But we draw the line there before there are other considerations outside of just a person’s ability to bat, bowl or field. If you start talking about making it provisional on whether someone has made a score or taken wickets, it doesn’t take us as a team in the direction that we want to go.”Harper also said that Thomas’ absence had been a key factor in Fidel Edwards’ recall to international duty, more than eight years since his latest appearance for West Indies.”As we build towards the defence of our T20 [World Cup], we’re looking to put together the sort of squad and team with the sort of players that will best serve us in that defence. What a player like Oshane Thomas offered us is the sort of firepower that can take wickets early and at the end, and really unsettle batsmen.”With him not being available and not performing at the sort of level we expected of him, we looked for the type of bowler that can offer us that. When we looked around the only bowler we thought offered us that sort of pace and firepower and penetration at this time was Fidel Edwards.”You’d recall our performance in some of the T20 games in New Zealand and where we were deficient. I would hope that the message that is sent [by Edwards’ selection] is the standard they need to attain, and that guys will work harder at developing their skills to reach that level.”
Australian captain Finch has already confirmed Philippe will make his T20I debut against New Zealand

Josh Philippe goes over the off side•BCCI
The rise and rise of Josh Philippe is set to continue as he prepares to make his T20I debut for Australia against New Zealand in Christchurch. The Sydney Sixers star is hoping to take the invaluable lessons he learned playing alongside AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL into the international arena.Australia captain Aaron Finch confirmed on Monday that Philippe would make his international debut in game one on February 22 barring any unforeseen injury. Finch also confirmed Philippe would bat somewhere in the top three, along with Finch and Matthew Wade, after a brief conversation with him on the plane.Related

“It was nice to hear him say those words,” Philippe said. “He sort of mentioned it on the plane but then to say it to the media obviously is pretty special as well so I’ve just got to train well and try not to get injured.”Philippe is in the form of his life having just been named player of the tournament in the recent BBL season where his Sixers claimed a second consecutive title. But it is the lessons he learned in the IPL from de Villiers and Kohli that he will hope to use in his first foray into international cricket.”I think it was just being in the same dressing room as some absolute superstars like that was really special,” Philippe said. “I sort of leant on AB a lot. He gave me some great advice along the way. It was just really cool to see how they go about their business out in the middle. There was some really challenging situations out there and they keep it so simple. Every time I asked a question or asked what they were thinking it just went back down to stand still, watch the ball, some really simple clear messages. It was pretty cool to know that the best in the business just keep in simple.”While Philippe is inked in to bat in the top three at the start of the five-match series there is a chance he may be utilised in the middle order. Stand-in coach Andrew McDonald revealed that Australia is hoping to use these matches a chance to find some of the missing middle-order pieces for Australia’s T20 World Cup tilt when David Warner and Steve Smith are likely to return to the top four.Philippe has made his name as an opener in the BBL but he began his career batting at No.6 for the Sixers. He had some success averaging 27.40 at an exceptional strike-rate of 152.22 in 10 career innings at that position. If Australia do experiment with Philippe in the middle order he will again use de Villiers as the blueprint for how to play that role.”It certainly takes a little bit of a different skill set,” Philippe said. “Having the opportunity to open gives you the freedom obviously to bat the full 20 overs. When you go through little periods of a few dot balls or not quite scoring rapidly you can always catch up. One thing I noticed, especially with someone like AB is just his ability to get off strike early. He never blew the game away too early. He was always sort of 10 off 8 or 12 off 10 and he’d set a platform from there and really target the back end. I think for me if that’s where my opportunity is I just need to be really busy at the crease. Whoever is at the other end, just sort of pass the strike off to them and really set up to target the last few overs.”The Australian squad exited the strict isolation portion of their 14-day quarantine on Thursday and were able to have a full nets session on Friday but they will train while remaining in quarantine the next week. Philippe plans to use the time to prepare for New Zealand’s bowlers who he has never faced before.”I haven’t seen any of the (Super Smash),” Philippe said. “I’ve seen most of those guys play on TV for New Zealand before. It’s super exciting to be in the mix to play against an international line up.”I’m going to have to start doing my research soon on their bowlers and their variations and work out from there my plan of attack against them.”
Manchester United kick off their season on Saturday afternoon with a repeat of the FA Cup final from last campaign. They face Manchester City in the Community Shield, hoping to recreate the impressive 2-1 win at Wembley just a few months ago, which came thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Their Premier League campaign gets underway the following Friday, as the Red Devils host Fulham at Old Trafford. It is the English top flight’s season opener and will be the campaign where United hope to reclaim their place in the top four, after missing out last season.
Following the Fulham game, Erik ten Hag’s side have their first trip on the road, as they travel to the AMEX stadium to face Brighton and Hove Albion. This will be the new Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler’s first home game in charge of his new club.
To end their first block of fixtures before the September international break, United face big rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. This is not a fixture Ten Hag has lost, with two wins and a draw to his name so far on home soil.
Amad Diallo scores for Manchester United
The Red Devils will certainly need to add further depth to their squad to help get off to the perfect start and have recently been linked with one man who can add depth to midfield.
Man Utd target Brazilian midfielder
The player in question here is Fluminense and Brazil international midfielder Andre. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder has excelled in recent seasons at Tricolor Flu Fluzao, and could now depart the club he has spent his whole career for a chance to shine in Europe.
According to a report from journalist Ben Jacobs, the Red Devils ‘still appreciate’ Andre, having previously shown interest in signing the midfielder. They have turned their focus his way as an alternative to Manuel Ugarte, for whom United do not want to pay the £51.6m PSG want for the midfielder.
morten-frendrup-andre-liverpool-opinion
Instead, United could pay a fee of around £30m to recruit Andre this summer. He already came close to a move to the Premier League, with Fulham previously showing an interest, but that deal has reportedly collapsed, as per one report, leaving the door open for United to swoop in.
Why Andre would be a good signing
So far during the Brazilian season, Andre has featured nine times for Fluminense, with a knee injury sadly keeping him out for a large portion of time. He also did not feature for Brazil at the Copa America recently, due to the same injury issue.
Fluminense midfielder Andre.
However, his quality is undeniable, and he could be a superb alternative option to Ugarte, now United have decided to end their interest in the Uruguay international. The 23-year-old midfielder was described as a "master of the dark arts" by football analyst Ben Mattinson, confirming he is a player who "loves to do battle".
Indeed, this is perhaps exactly what United are looking for at the base of their midfield, a tough-tackling ball-winner. In this sense, he could be a good Ugarte alternative, although might struggle in a single pivot, and the former Sporting midfielder does rank higher than him in some metrics.
As per FBref, Ugarte averages 6.32 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, compared to just 3.82 for Andre, a significant difference. However, they are closer in ball recovery stats, with Ugarte averaging 8.42 per game and Andre slightly less at 7.3.
The gulf between the pair off the ball is noticeable but not drastic, and if he was played in a double pivot with someone like Mainoo or Mason Mount, who also excels out of possession, some of his deficiencies could be hidden.

However, the Brazilian is also superb on the ball, particularly when carrying forward. He excels in receiving the ball of the defensive line and progressing play through carrying. The Fluminense midfielder averages 0.34 progressive carries and completes 0.45 into the final third each game, showing his willingness to get forward.
Fluminense midfielder Andre.
Not only that, Andre is also a good progressive passer from deeper areas, and this is also reflected in his stats compared to Ugarte. He averages 5.17 progressive passes per 90 minutes, compared to the Uruguayan’s 4.05, a clear difference which could help United on the ball far more.
For a fee of around £30m, this is perhaps a deal that United should not miss out on. They do not really have a profile like Andre, and whilst he does have struggles out of possession, he is wonderful on the ball and would add lots of technical quality to United’s midfield.
