Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has reportedly told the club's President of Football Operations, Monchi, to work his magic and get a deal done for a "dazzling" attacking player this summer.

The Villans have a huge few weeks ahead of them in the Premier League, with themselves and Tottenham battling it out for the fourth remaining Champions League spot. Qualifying for Europe's biggest club competition would be a massive achievement by Emery and his players, and immediately improve their chances of signing top-quality players in the summer transfer window.

According to a recent update, Villa are a "serious threat" in the battle to sign Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee at the end of the season, battling with the likes of AC Milan and Inter Milan for his signature. The Dutchman is enjoying a good season, bagging 11 goals and four assists in Serie A.

The Midlands side have also been linked with a summer move for Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville, who has arguably been one of the most influential players in his side's Championship promotion push in 2023/24, registering 28 goal contributions (19 goals and nine assists) in the league. Should the Whites fail to earn promotion, he is expected to leave the club.

Since signing a new deal as Villa manager, Emery has reportedly asked the club to sign Villarreal midfiedler Alex Baena, and it seems that isn't his only request.

Emery looks to Monchi to strike deal

According to a new report from Estadio Deportivo [via Sport Witness], Emery also wants Monchi to get a deal for Nico Williams over the line.

In the report, is claimed that the manager "has twice tried to convince the player and has been rejected on both occasions", and the Villa boss has now "entrusted Monchi with a mission" to snap him up before the beginning of next season.

At this point, it would be a disappointment not to see Williams in a Villa shirt next season, considering what a big target he appears to be for Emery. There is an understandable reason for him wanting to snap up the 21-year-old, considering he has already become such an important player for Bilbao, chipping in with eight assists in 24 La Liga starts this season and being lauded as "dazzling" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Williams is also now a 13-cap and two-goal Spain international, showing that he is a growing force at international level, and given the fact that he is still only 21, there should be so much more brilliance to come in the approaching years.

Monchi has gained a reputation for his "genius" in the transfer market throughout his career, including at Sevilla and Villa, and if he secures the signing of Williams he will be worth his weight in gold once again.

وتعرض برشلونة للهزيمة بهدفين مقابل هدف في منافسات بطولة الدوري الإسباني، وسجل رافينها هدفًا.

وقال رافينها في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “ماركا” الإسبانية: “لقد كنا سيئين في المباراة، علينا أن نراجع ما نفعله من أخطاء لكي نحاول التحسن والفوز بالمباريات”.

Com um primeiro tempo bastante honesto, em que conseguiu segurar o Atlético-MG e neutralizar as suas forças, além de marcar um gol em contra-ataque, o Timão parecia caminhar para uma vitória importante e que daria moral para jogadores e comissão técnica, mas a volta para o segundo tempo foi muito abaixo do esperado e o Galo passou pro cima dos corintianos.

É muito evidente que os valores individuais do time mineiro são superiores aos do Corinthians, mas ficou bastante claro que o elenco e o time também o são. Mesmo poupando jogadores e em meio a uma disputa contra o Boca Juniors pela Libertadores, o Atlético-MG dominou completamente o adversário na etapa final e acabou virando o jogo com um extra classe como é Hulk.

Engana-se, porém, quem pensa que Giuliano pode fazer como Hulk e ser a diferença corintiana daqui para frente. Posso ser desmentido pelos fatos vindouros, mas o atleticano só consegue ter esse poder de decisão porque o restante do time lhe dá suporte e é muito bem treinado por Cuca. Hoje, nem o elenco do Timão, nem o seu treinador têm condições de fazer algo do tipo.

Há problemas na criatividade que Giuliano pode resolver. Há problemas em dividir com Gustavo Mosquito a dependência ofensiva, que o novo reforço também pode solucionar, mas ainda temos outros importantes fatores e setores que precisam ser corrigidos e que o meia não vai poder contribuir, como a dificuldade de manter resultados e a pegada em dois tempos.

Além disso, é bastante notório que alguns jogadores importantes não estão em suas melhores fases, seja na defesa, no meio ou no ataque. As opções no banco de reservas são limitadas no sentido de mudar algo em uma partida, o nível não se mantém e na maioria das vezes cai. Somente Giuliano não vai conseguir solucionar essas questões pelo fato de ser um atleta acima da média.

Por fim, o sucesso também depende do trabalho da comissão técnica e de como ela vai utilizar o novo reforço. Se depender do crivo da torcida neste momento, as críticas serão grande e isso é um fator a ser levado em consideração nessa análise. A confiança da diretoria no treinador precisa estar em dia, com respaldo necessário e noção de que Giuliano não é o salvador.

Glasgow Rangers’ Premiership title hopes are all but over after yet another Old Firm defeat this afternoon.

In a game that they needed to win to stand any chance of winning a first league title in three years, the Light Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead.

Conceding two goals during the first half was always going to present an uphill task and things didn’t get much better when John Lundstram was sent off.

The Englishman may have arguably played his final Old Firm clash as his stupidity suggests Philippe Clement would be wise to leave him out of the Scottish Cup final in two weeks.

The midfielder has entered into the final few weeks of his current contract and following this abject display, it could be curtains for him at Ibrox.

During his brief time on the field, Lundstram only won three of his ten contested duels, succeeded with just one of his three dribble attempts, lost possession seven times and even scored an own goal in what was a display well below par.

Borna Barisic’s statistics vs Celtic

The Croatian was chosen ahead of Ridvan Yilmaz on the left side of defence, yet it was clearly a poor call by the manager, despite the Turk just returning from injury last week.

Barisic failed to offer anything meaningful going forward, delivering just one accurate cross, making one key pass and creating zero big chances, warranting his 5/10 match rating from Glasgow World.

Defensively, he was even worse. The 31-year-old not only lost possession nine times during his hour-long stint on the pitch, but he also won just one duel, committed a foul and failed to make either a single tackle or interception.

So often a key member of the starting XI, the previous few months have seen the defender endure a dismal end to his spell in Glasgow, and the Old Firm display this afternoon certainly looks like the final nail in the coffin – with just a matter of weeks left on his existing deal.

Time and time again, Barisic and Lundstram have let the club down when it matters most. With a win required at Parkhead in order to turn the tide of this title race, the duo were anonymous.

Clement will hopefully be glad to see the back of them when the summer transfer window rolls around, especially as he can free up some of the wage bill by releasing them when their contracts expire.

It will mark the end of an era, yet the truth is, the pair, alongside a few others this season, haven’t been good enough.

Jason Holder has admitted that it was “tough” for him to “transition” back to being a player in the ODI side after Cricket West Indies replaced him with Kieron Pollard as the white-ball captain last September. Although Holder remains the Test captain, his performances in ODI cricket post the 2019 World Cup have weakened, which he said also had to do with him batting lower down the order where he didn’t have enough time to settle before making an impact.”To be quite honest, it has been tough transitioning back just as a player,” Holder told the Cricket Collective podcast on TalkSPORT last week. “In hindsight, it has been tough trying to understand how to get back in as just a player.”CWI had stated that one of the reasons behind Pollard’s appointment as the white-ball captain was to improve West Indies’ performances in limited-overs cricket, especially in ODIs where West Indies had finished ninth in the ten-team World Cup last year. But Holder was caught unawares by the timing of CWI’s decision.Holder was just getting ready to lead the Barbados Tridents in the 2019 CPL when he was told of the news. “Yeah, it was an interesting time for me. I had found out earlier in the tournament that we have moved as one-day international captain. For me, it was just trying to win it [the CPL].”Holder succeded, as the Tridents won the CPL with the captain finishing as the joint-third highest wicket-taker in the tournament.However, Holder was failing to create a similar impact with the ball for West Indies. Since the World Cup, Holder has picked up just seven wickets in ten innings at an average of 69.85 and a strike rate of 75.4. Since Pollard became the captain, Holder has picked up six wickets in eight ODIs at 66.16 with a strike rate of 75. These numbers pale in comparison to his career stats: overall, he has 136 wickets from 111 innings at an average of 36.38 and a strike rate of 39.3.”Performances obviously haven’t been there as I would’ve probably liked, but I’m not too disheartened,” Holder said. “I don’t beat myself up. I don’t get too worried because I know my ability. I know what I can produce. Holder pointed out that the responsibility of leading West Indies in both Tests and ODIs, playing constant cricket across the three formats and also playing his maiden county season, for Northants, had taken a toll both physically and mentally. Holder had played 62 matches in 2019, the second-most by a West Indies player across all formats including first-class cricket, List-A and T20s.”I felt I needed the break after the India series [in December] particularly, just to refresh,” Holder said. “I had played every single series in the entire year, I played county cricket as well, and my batteries needed a little bit of a recharge. Obviously, I needed some time to go and think about how I wanted to go forward as a player and try to work out again how just to be a player as opposed to being the captain.”A cause for concern for Pollard and West Indies coach Phil Simmons was Holder’s lean form with the bat: he has scored just of 50 runs from six ODI innings after being dropped as captain. Holder has come in at No. 7 in five of those innings in contrast to his last 15 knocks as captain, when he had batted at No. 6 or higher 13 times.Holder admitted he was still adapting to batting in the lower order, which was proving to be a challenge. “Certain situations haven’t really gone my way in terms of having an extended time to bat in one-day cricket, which I feel personally has contributed to me not having that [big] score. I’m a batsman who needs a little bit of a time to get in and then flourish. And I haven’t had many opportunities to get a solid knock. There hasn’t been much Test cricket going on as well too, which helps me a lot in terms of spending time at the crease.”Holder said that he was helping Pollard wherever he could because “for me, the winner has to be the West Indies cricket regardless of who is captaining or who the administrators are.”Holder said he was in “good spirits” and things would once again “fall back” in their place for him soon. “But, again, I’m not too disheartened. I’ve done a lot of thinking, I’ve done a few technical sessions trying to work through a few things that I wanted to correct. I’m in really good spirits. I know the performances will come and I’m just being as patient as I possibly can before that happens.”I don’t think it’s long before you see me getting back to my normal self. I’m very, very confident. I don’t think it’s a question of my ability. I know my ability. It’s just performing and producing. As I said the structure and dynamics have changed and based on how things have gone, it is little to no time going in to bat. So I just have got to find ways to cope and produce in the short stints of batting at the international stage. I will work it out. I am confident it will all fall back into place.”

Scotland are willing to host their scheduled games against New Zealand and Australia behind closed doors if necessary, but will wait on guidance from those boards and government advice before making any decisions.While the fixtures are yet to be officially postponed, it looks highly unlikely that they will take place as planned, with New Zealand due to play a T20I on June 10 and an ODI on June 12, before Australia’s solitary T20I on June 29.The first leg of New Zealand’s European tour – an ODI series in the Netherlands – was postponed last week following advice from the Dutch government, while Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom told ESPNcricinfo last week that the series looked “fairly doubtful”. Australia’s T20I in Scotland was due to be played immediately before their six-match limited-overs series in England, which looks likely to be pushed towards September.”We’re planning our way through and waiting to see what happens with advice,” Gus Mackay, Cricket Scotland’s CEO, told ESPNcricinfo. “That’s all we can do at this stage. New Zealand aren’t going to Holland, and we’re just waiting to be guided by what their board says before we make any final decision.”The whole Future Tours Programme is going to be disrupted, so we don’t know what that looks like. There’s been talk in the press of Australia coming over this way in September time, and New Zealand are supposed to go to Ireland as well. The board’s cash reserves stood at £319,272 according to its latest annual report, and a statement said that “those reserves would be very rapidly exhausted unless action is taken now”.The board has furloughed the majority of its staff, including players, through the UK government’s job retention scheme, but salaries will be topped up to 100 percent.Mackay also suggested that the ICC will do “everything in their power” to ensure that the T20 World Cup will be able to take place as planned in Australia in October and November.”It’s important from an ICC point of view that they deliver their events schedule to broadcasters and sponsors,” he said. “They’ll be doing everything in their power to make sure that it can take place.”We’ve got to be realistic as to how things pan out. We’re in constant dialogue with the ICC and we’re waiting to see what happens – they provide a lot of finance into the business, not just for us but across the sport.”The domestic cricket season in Scotland remains indefinitely suspended. A further decision will be taken only after the UK government issues further advice on a possible exit strategy from its lockdown on May 7. A meeting on the status of the Euro T20 Slam is also scheduled for that day. The tournament’s inaugural season is due to happen this summer following last year’s postponement, but its status is in doubt due to the pandemic.
