Mark Adair stars as Ireland move closer to playoffs

The seamer took 3 for 10 to shoot out Jersey for 105 and hand them their third loss

Mark Adair celebrates an edge to the keeper for another wicket•Peter Della Penna

Mark Adair’s miserly spell embodied a tight all-round bowling effort as Ireland took a step closer to clinching a spot in the playoffs with an eight-wicket win over Jersey.Man-of-the-Match Adair struck with the fourth ball of the game, getting Harrison Carlyon driving to mid-off for a duck. Jersey briefly counterattacked through Nick Greenwood and Ben Stevens, who flicked and drove for a trio of fours off Boyd Rankin in the fourth over. The pair added 36 in quick time as Greenwood concluded the boundary sequence with an edge past Gary Wilson for four before he was bowled by David Delany to end the fifth, beaten for pace driving to make it 36 for 2.Jersey would not score another boundary until the 16th over as Ireland strangled them. Adair produced a wicket maiden in the sixth over, foxing Jonty Jenner with a slower ball to trap him leg before for a second-ball duck. David Delany struck again next over as Wilson kept a slip in for the new batsman Jake Dunford and it resulted in an edge there to Andy Balbirnie for a golden duck. The middle order continued to struggle as Craig Young induced a drive from Stevens to Gareth Delany at cover for 25 to end the 10th over at 49 for 5.Ireland then suffered an injury scare when David Delany limped off midway through his third over in the 13th with a leg problem but Ireland team officials said later they believed it was just cramp. George Dockrell came on to finish the over and struck with the wicket of Ben Ward who skied a drive to long-off. Corey Bisson charged Gareth’s legspin to be stumped, making it 76 for 7 in 15.Adair came back in the 17th to claim his third as Dominic Blampied edged a drive low to Wilson behind the stumps for 20. Charles Perchard drove a sharp return catch back to Boyd Rankin in the 19th before Anthony Hawkins-Kay was run-out off the final ball of the innings, trying to steal a bye, as Jersey were dismissed for 105.Paul Stirling muscled Ireland’s chase with an unbeaten 58 off 37 balls. He added 35 with Kevin O’Brien for the first wicket before O’Brien drove Perchard to Hawkins-Kay at extra-cover. The only other wicket to fall was Balbirnie for 33, skying a drive off Blampied’s legspin for another catch at extra-cover by Hawkins-Kay.Stirling brought up his fifty with a six over long-on to bring Ireland one shot away from victory. He finished it off by slog-sweeping Blampied over square leg for another six.Ireland face winless Nigeria in their final Group B match. A heavy win could boost their net run rate and put them in position to possibly claim first place depending on the tiebreaker as they jostle with Oman and Canada for pole position.

Nottingham Forest struck gold on a star whose value has risen by 326%

Nottingham Forest have certainly splashed the cash since promotion in 2022, with owner Evangelos Marinakis investing over £250m on new talents to ensure survival.

Big-money signings such as Anthony Elanga and Morgan Gibbs-White have both been money well spent despite their large fees, with the club set for a huge profit on the pair.

However, the club have also wasted a lot of money in the market with Emmanuel Dennis the main example – signing for up to £20m from Watford just under two years ago, before re-joining the Hornets on loan in January after an unsuccessful stint in the East Midlands.

Despite being handed a four-point deduction for breaking PSR rules, the club have a squad more than capable of securing survival in the Premier League this season.

Nottingham Forest may have to sell a "sensational" star to ease PSR worries

The club still might be forced to sell another star after Brennan Johnson’s departure.

ByEthan Lamb Mar 20, 2024

One player in particular has impressed in recent weeks, with the youngster finally looking settled at the City Ground after his summer transfer.

Callum Hudson-Odoi's stats at Nottingham Forest

After arriving at the club from Chelsea during the summer of 2023, winger Callum Hudson-Odoi looked as though he would be a shrewd addition to the club given his previous successes in the Premier League.

He made an instant impact on his first appearance for the Reds, scoring a goal-of-the-season contender against Vincent Kompany's Burnley side to secure a vital point for his new team.

He suffered a dip in form after his debut, with the 23-year-old not scoring again until the 1-1 draw away at Bournemouth at the start of February – a run of just under six months without a goal.

His strike at the Vitality would be the start of his best run of form in a Reds shirt, with the winger also scoring in his next two outings against Newcastle United and West Ham United, making it three games in a row in which he'd found the net.

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

However, he's controversially been dropped by boss Nuno Espírito Santo in recent weeks, with the former Chelsea man having to sit on the bench with loanee Divock Origi featuring in an unnatural wide role ahead of the 23-year-old.

In the last two matches, Hudson-Odoi has only featured for a combined 33 minutes, with the winger undeserving of the treatment he's receiving given his form just a couple of weeks ago.

Callum Hudson-Odoi's market value in 2024

The "sensational" talent, as described by scout Antonio Mango, joined the Reds for a deal in the region of £3m in the summer, with the move allowing the winger to kickstart his career after a stop-start couple of years.

However, fast-forward just seven months on from his arrival, and the youngster has a market value of £12.8m as per Transfermarkt – an increase of 326% compared to the fee paid for the wideman.

His rise in market value has seen Hudson-Odoi leapfrog many Forest players, with the former Chelsea player now worth more than fellow youngster Andrew Omobamidele and World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel, with the pair valued at £9.4m and £8.5m respectively.

Despite Forest's poor dealings in the market in recent times, Hudson-Odoi's deal is proof that the club can operate to a high quality when not making erratic and unneeded signings.

With the club at risk of a potential further PSR breach next season, Marinakis and Co need to be savvy to stay within the confines, with the club needing to prioritise cheap additions that could make them a profit – therefore making Forest more sustainable in the process.

Sky Sports man impressed by “amazing” off-field deal agreed by Aston Villa

Now a side on course to qualify for the Champions League, to say that Aston Villa have come a long way since Steven Gerrard had them worrying about relegation troubles would be an understatement. And nothing represents their rise more than their business away from the pitch.

Aston Villa seal "amazing" off-field deal

Whilst it's easy to focus on the likes of Moussa Diaby and Leon Bailey arriving in recent years and Unai Emery also arriving in between those two transfers, Villa have also developed as a club off the pitch. Their rise under Emery has been carefully crafted up to the present day when they find themselves inside the Premier League's top four.

Gone are the days when top-flight safety was Villa's greatest concern and safety that didn't always arrive too. Arrived, instead, are arguably the Villans' best days in the Premier League if they manage to make their involvement in the race for the top four less of a unique underdog moment and more of a consistent norm in English football.

17 year-old joins Aston Villa on trial during international break

He’s one for the future.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 22, 2024

To do that, keeping up with the Premier League's big six on a financial basis will be important, which their latest shirt sponsorship highlights they're capable of doing. According to Football Insider, Aston Villa's latest sponsorship agreement with Betano is worth £40m, and Sky Sports' Kieran Maguire has claimed that deal beats Everton's previous record of the biggest deal outside the Premier League's classic top six. Maguire told Football Insider:

Record sponsorship highlights Aston Villa's progress

Smashing Everton's record out of the park, Villa and NSWE are now doing their best to keep up with the Premier League's top six both on and off the pitch. The financial boost of such a sponsorship could only help Emery's side on the pitch too, with the backing for summer arrivals now arguably more in place than ever.

Add the potential attraction of Champions League football and Villa could be in for an exciting summer. Already, they've been linked with the likes of Nico Williams and Paulo Dybala in what may prove to be two major coups.

Roma's Paulo Dybala

Signing Dybala could be particularly impressive. The AS Roma star is an experienced attacking midfielder these days, who can also play as a forward. If Villa managed to land the Argentine international, then he would form an unstoppable partnership with Ollie Watkins.

As things stand, the only way seems up for Villa, who are better placed than ever to establish themselves not only in the Premier League's top six but also on a European level. Led by Emery, those in the Midlands are only in for more days to remember at this rate.

Tive ótimas comissões que participei e fico feliz com todo conteúdo que tenho, sou inquieto, me atrapalha pessoalmente, socialmente, porque gasto muita energia, as vezes me cobro em uma mesa falar menos e deixar outra pessoa falar, fico me policiando, minha mulher me ajuda a me policiar. Profissional é desafiador. Nós, treinadores, temos que trabalhar muito. Continuar correndo atrás do resultado, trabalho, performance.

India's fast bowlers make world cricket exciting – Phil Simmons

The West Indies coach also echoed Virat Kohli’s views on the need to promote Test cricket aggressively

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of how India’s pacers dominated their home season in resounding wins over South Africa and Bangladesh was that it was done without Jasprit Bumrah, India’s highest ranked Test bowler and arguably most potent weapon. The trio of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav have already stacked up never-before-seen numbers, and the addition of Bumrah makes for a pace quartet that could potentially be an all-conditions force for the next few years.Without comparing the four Indian pacers to past West Indies pace quartets – it’s far too early for that anyway – Phil Simmons said watching good fast bowling was exciting, no matter which team the bowlers belonged to.”I can’t say how long ago, but when I first came here, you would have Madan Lal opening the bowling,” Simmons said at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday. “Now you have guys bowling at 90 miles per hour opening and your premier fast bowler (Bumrah) was injured for this Test, so you still have him to come back. It’s exciting for world cricket. Teams know now that you have to play properly on both sides – you have to have proper fast bowlers and proper spinners to beat India. Fast bowling from anybody is exciting, so it’s great to see that happen. Hopefully we can get back our battery of young fast bowlers to the level where we’re competing and giving people trouble.”Simmons is back as the West Indies coach for a second spell, and the team will take on Afghanistan in a one-off Test starting Wednesday. While this will be a regularly scheduled Test match, Simmons was left impressed with what he had watched of India’s inaugural day-night, pink-ball Test at the Eden Gardens. He also endorsed India captain Virat Kohli’s views on how Test matches should be marketed.”I did watch the first day. It was exciting to see Eden Gardens full. It’s an awesome sight,” Simmons said. “I think Virat hit the nail on the head when he said we have to promote Test cricket as hard as we promote T20. Even though T20 has more money involved, we have to promote it the same way. I think if that’s done, we can see a resurgence of big crowds in Test cricket anywhere you go in the world.”The Eden Gardens Test finished on the third day, but drew big crowds on all three days. Questions remain about the visibility of the pink ball under lights, but having never been part of a day-night Test yet, Simmons said he could only offer his opinion on how well it could be sighted once he had first-hand experience. However, he was convinced this was the way forward for cricket. “Especially day-night Test cricket, I think that is the future,” he said.

Arsenal can forget Toney by signing "game changer" who’d supercharge Saka

After several years in the footballing wilderness, Arsenal are firmly back among the big boys, and as things stand, look ready to overtake them.

Mikel Arteta has crafted a supremely talented squad at the Emirates through intelligent signings and facilitating brilliant youth players like Bukayo Saka.

However, with Gabriel Jesus increasingly injury-prone and Eddie Nketiah – who hasn't scored a Premier League goal since October – not at the level, the club needs to add a star number nine to the mix in the summer, and based on recent reports, they might do just that…

The latest on Arsenal's striker search

Over the last 18 months or so, the Gunners have been linked with a number of talented nines, from Napoli's Victor Osimhen to RB Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško, but perhaps none have been more heavily touted for a move to N5 than Brentford's Ivan Toney.

However, in recent weeks, it would appear that the north Londoners have moved on from the Englishman and have now turned their attention to Viktor Gyökeres, a player who was tearing it up in the Championship last season and has been even more clinical in Portugal this year.

According to a recent report from talkSPORT, the Gunners have placed the Swedish marksman firmly at the top of their summer wishlist and, therefore, ahead of the Brentford ace.

That said, while Arsenal appear to have made their choice between the two goalscorers, have they made the right one?

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-aston-villa-cameron-archer

How Gyökeres compares to Toney

So, with the league leaders looking for a striker to finish the plentiful chances created by their fluid frontline, the most important thing to compare between the pair would be their recent goal records. However, with the former Newcastle United ace missing the majority of this season due to his eight-month betting-related ban, it would make sense to look at their record from the last two seasons to work out their average return.

Since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, Sporting CP's "game changer," as content creator Statman Dave described him, has scored 58 goals and provided 26 assists in 89 games, whereas the Bees' number nine has scored 25 goals and provided five assists in 45 games.

So, when looking at just goals, the Swedish phenom comes out on top with a more impressive 0.65 per game compared to the Englishman's average of 0.55, and it gets even more one-sided when looking at goal involvements as a whole, with the former Coventry City ace averaging 0.94 to just 0.66 from his potential competition.

Unfortunately for the former Peterborough ace, the comparisons become yet more one-sided when taking their underlying numbers into account. According to FBref, he produces a significantly lower non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, is less clinical in front of goal, contributes less to build-up, has a far inferior pass completion, and is generally less dangerous on the ball.

Overall, there isn't a meaningful attacking metric in which he comes out on top. He would, therefore, be a weaker option to spearhead the Gunners' attack and likely a far more frustrating teammate for the likes of Saka, who could thrive alongside Gyökeres – the Englishman having already racked up 29 goals and assists this season in all competitions.

The Swede's clinical finishing would see the Hale End gem's assist numbers explode, and his brilliant dribbling ability would open up more space for the young Englishman to exploit and potentially see his goalscoring figures similarly supercharged.

Jeetan Patel has stepped down as Warwickshire’s captain ahead of his planned retirement at the end of next season, with allrounder Will Rhodes replacing him in the role.Patel, who has captained the club for the last two summers, will retire from all forms of cricket after the 2020 season, and looks set for a career as a coach, having worked as a spin-bowling consultant for England during their T20I series in New Zealand last month.ALSO READ: Patel to work with England during T20I seriesRhodes, 24, joined Warwickshire from Yorkshire ahead of the 2018 season, and has become a fixture at the top of the order in the County Championship, opening the batting alongside Dom Sibley.Paul Farbrace, the club’s sport director said: “Despite being only 24, Will has quickly become recognised as a senior member of the dressing room and he has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities that have impressed the cricket management team.”He can benefit from the wealth of experience that Jeetan offers as a former captain and player who, alongside Ian Bell and Tim Ambrose, knows what it takes to win trophies over a sustained period of time with Warwickshire.”Jeetan is an outstanding cricketer and we’re very grateful for the job that he has done as captain over the last two years. Rhodes described his appointment as “a real honour” and credited Patel with aiding his development at Edgbaston. “Jeets has been my first captain here at Warwickshire,” he said. “He’s played a huge role in helping me settle at the club so quickly and in establishing myself here across all formats.”Following in the footsteps of a true Warwickshire legend is a very exciting prospect and he will be a great support for me as captain.”Patel said the decision to step back from the captaincy had been a joint decision. “It is no secret that the club is held close to my heart, and renouncing the captain’s role, as much as I’ve enjoyed the challenge of being at the helm over such a challenging period, is a result that both management and myself have come to with the club’s future in mind.”With my official retirement from playing all forms of cricket at the conclusion of the 2020 season, Will gives the club the opportunity to continue to transition smoothly into a young, hardworking and successful team with growth at the forefront of the Bears journey.”I am wholly committed in my duty to support Will and the team wherever possible throughout my last playing season.”Rhodes will captain both the County Championship and 50-over teams, with Sibley continuing as vice-captain, while the club said that an announcement regarding their T20 captain would be made “in due course”.
