Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a much-needed injury boost regarding a player who has been called a "man mountain", following an update from reliable journalist Alex Miller.

The Owls are right in the thick of a Championship relegation battle, with last Friday's 2-0 win at home to Birmingham City a massive result in their quest to avoid the drop.

While results and performances have too often been lacking this season – things have improved a lot since Danny Rohl replaced Xiscvo Munoz, in fairness – injuries have also held Wednesday back, having to make do without key man in various positions.

Dominic Iorfa has been a loss at the back, the likes of Barry Bannan and Will Vaulks have been unavailable in the middle of the park – George Byers has moved on, too – and there have also been fitness issues for Josh Windass in attack.

Wednesday are now heading into the business end of the season, knowing that further improvements are needed to avoid relegation back to League One, and they have been handed a big boost.

Dominic Iorfa return update

Taking to X, Miller claimed that Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa is back in training and should return to play a key role in the Owls' relegation battle at some point soon.

"Good news from the Middlewood Road treatment room, where one of the Owls' longer-term absentees is back in training ahead of schedule and could deliver a boost heading into the business end of the season."

Miller goes into a little more detail in his report for The Sheffield Star, saying that a March return date still looks possible for the centre-back: "Initial indications were that Iorfa would only be able to return to training in March and while that may still be the case when it comes to match action should Wednesday choose to take a very slow-and-steady approach, there are high hopes he'll be ready to play a part in the final weeks end of the season after he was included in their EFL registration list last week."

This is brilliant news for Wednesday, considering what a stalwart Iorfa has been for an extended period of time, arguably proving to be one of their standout defenders over the last four or five years. The 28-year-old has now made 152 appearances for the club, and played a big role in his side earning promotion last term, starting 30 matches in League One.

He has been described as "man mountain" by Bannan, highlighting how much he is valued by his teammates, and his return could be key to his team remaining in the Championship.

Admittedly, Iorfa will likely take time to find his best form initially, so Rohl may have to be careful easing him back in, but his experience could really come to the fore when Wednesday need him the most.

An FA Cup classic awaits Manchester United in the quarterfinals, with Liverpool next to travel to Old Trafford in just over two weeks time.

Last night, Erik ten Hag's side picked up an important 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in a tie that saw plenty of attacking action as well as poor finishing.

Despite dominating the ball in the first half, the Red Devils were extremely vulnerable in transition, with the hosts able to register 12 attempts compared to United's nine.

However, after the break, the visitors looked like the only team that would go on to win the tie, limiting Forest to four shots, and they eventually got their goal with minutes to go via a Bruno Fernandes free kick, which was nodded home by Casemiro.

After being replaced at the weekend due to a head injury, Casemiro returned to the starting XI alongside Scott McTominay in midfield, his seventh consecutive start in 2024.

Out of all the attacking quality up front, it was the Brazilian defensive midfielder who handed Ten Hag the victory, saving United from playing extra time, which would have been the aim given the Manchester Derby is looming.

Throughout the tie, the 32-year-old was relatively composed on the ball, having a pass accuracy of 87% while only losing possession seven times. Casemiro combined well with Antony and Fernandes, in particular, in spells, with quick passages of play allowing him to have three strikes at goal.

However, there were still signs that suggest his athleticism, physicality, and ability to cover ground are all declining, with the midfielder losing 50% of his 12 duels and being dribbled past four times. That said, there was one player on the field whose performance may have gone slightly under the radar.

Andre Onana's performance against Forest

Andre Onana has received plenty of criticism this season – notably being targeted for the way he "makes the defence nervous", as per club legend Paul Scholes – but he is finally showing the Premier League why Ten Hag was so keen to sign him in the summer.

In truth, the Cameroon goalkeeper has almost been set up to fail, with the Red Devils conceding another 16 shots yesterday, their 116th across the last six games. Nevertheless, United still somehow walked away with a clean sheet last night, which was all down to the number 24.

The 27-year-old made pivotal saves in both halves, and the table below shows his key statistics from the tie, which prove United wouldn't have beat Forest without him in between the sticks.

As can be seen in the table above, Onana made five saves in the tie, with 80% of them being from shots inside the box, which highlights how many opportunities the Tricky Trees were able to have in dangerous zones. His performance had similarities to the one during United's 2-1 win over Aston Villa recently, where the former Inter star prevented 1.56 goals, and without his saving ability, United could have conceded at least a couple of goals.

The experienced shot-stopper was also proactive, making one clearance and one punch while also having a pass accuracy of 82%, which allowed Ten Hag's side to remain in control, and that was particularly evident in the second half.

Overall, it was another impressive showing by Onana, who was handed an 8/10 match rating by the Manchester Evening News, and he should be thanked for his role in yesterday's victory. His confidence is increasing with each game, but he is set for a much busier time on Sunday at the Etihad.

Manchester United’s 2023/24 campaign can only be described as underwhelming, with the FA Cup being the only title left to be won.

There are plenty of reasons for the lack of progression this season, but fingers are beginning to be pointed towards Erik ten Hag for his approach and style of play.

In truth, injuries have had a huge role to play in preventing the boss from fielding his best starting lineup, but those who have been given a chance, bar a handful, have failed to perform.

With that in mind, there’s one individual who has struggled to get going this season above all, with his statistics and output speaking for themselves.

What Man United actually paid for Antony

Last summer, Antony followed in the footsteps of Ten Hag by joining Man United from Ajax, but it hasn’t exactly been an easy 18 months in England for the Brazilian.

Arriving with an enormous £82m price tag on his head, the task at hand was as simple as it gets: perform extremely well or receive an endless amount of criticism.

The winger's start to life at Old Trafford couldn’t have gone any better, scoring on his debut against Arsenal and netting in his first three Premier League starts.

However, just a few weeks later, Antony received plenty of backlash for his trademark spin in the Europa League, with pundit Robbie Savage calling the 24-year-old “embarrassing.”

As the campaign progressed, Antony’s performances became more inconsistent, to the point where his value has significantly dropped in just over a year. That's not ideal for a man on wages as high as £200k-per-year and over £10m annually.

After a tough first campaign, Antony was supposed to truly make the right-wing position in United’s team his own this season, especially after starring in the 3-1 pre-season win against RC Lens with a goal and an assist.

However, that certainly hasn’t been the case, with the number 21 struggling to have any real impact in attack whatsoever, failing to register a goal contribution in 21 Premier League appearances.

In fact, his only two of the campaign both came against League Two opponent Newport County in the FA Cup, and this has led to him losing his place in the side to Alejandro Garnacho.

Antony’s lack of quality and the fact he’s lost his place in the team has caused his estimated worth to plummet by £52m as per Transfermarkt, and the table below shows his value ranks compared to other first-choice right-wingers in England. it's certainly alarming viewing.

Even though he is far less valuable, plenty of the United faithful are calling for Antony to be moved on in the summer, but Ten Hag has still stuck by the attacker, saying:

“He has a big potential. He hasn’t shown it lately, but I know what his talent is. It is about proving his talent. It is about him.”
