Kohli not taking the Knight Riders lightly

Virat Kohli has urged his team to put aside the injury-enforced departure of AB de Villiers and get their Champions League T20 campaign on track after the opening defeat to Warriors

Siddarth Ravindran in Bangalore28-Sep-2011Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman, has urged his team to put aside the injury-enforced departure of AB de Villiers and get their Champions League T20 campaign on track after the opening defeat to Warriors.”Every game is important when you only have four games,” Kohli said on Wednesday. “Tomorrow’s game (against Kolkata Knight Riders) is important, AB not being in the team is a huge loss. I’ll probably have to take more responsibility now, we should just take it as a challenge.”The Knight Riders are staring elimination after defeats in their first two matches, but Kohli expected a tough match on Thursday. “I was surprised KKR lost two games in a row, they are a full-strength side when all the players are fit and in form,” he said. “They are an explosive side, if you let them go they can hurt you badly. It will be important to put them under pressure from ball one.”The Royal Challengers were in charge of their opening encounter against Warriors before a late surge gave the South African side a last-ball victory. Kohli said the team had learnt from that defeat. “In a T20 game, unless a team needs 15 or 16 runs an over in the end, you haven’t really won the game, and the key is to not get relaxed,” he said. “One or two 15-run overs can turn the game. The Warriors did that against us, we were cruising till 10 overs of the chase, a few good overs here and there cost us the game. They batted really well, Johan Botha came and smashed a few, Ashwell Prince batted well, and in the end Nicky Boje and Wayne Parnell contributed, so you never know who’s going to do what in a T20, so you can never relax.”The senior bowlers Daniel Vettori and Dirk Nannes bowled out early against Warriors, leaving the inexperienced local pair of Abhimanyu Mithun and S Aravind to deal with the pressure of bowling the final two overs. Kohli said the Royal Challengers didn’t have designated death-overs specialists. “Unless you have someone like [Lasith] Malinga in the side you can never rely on anyone bowling the death overs, you can’t pre-plan it,” he said. “So I guess we just go with the situation of the game, I think Aravind bowled a brilliant last over, just one slower ball that fell short, other than that he bowled a brilliant last over.”With a majority of the games in the CLT20 going into the final over, Kohli said the close defeat had some positives as well. “It’s all about learning, all these bowlers if they become experienced in the last overs, and if they come out successful in those, that will really help in high-pressure games going forward.”

Rangers: Gvb handed major selection boost

Rangers have been handed a major boost as an update has emerged on midfielder Joe Aribo…

What’s the latest?

Gers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has revealed that the Nigeria international will be available for selection against Ross County. The former Charlton man has been away with his country at the Africa Cup of Nations and has now returned to Scotland, although he will be absent against Livingston.

He told the Daily Record: “Joe Aribo is travelling back today (Tuesday) and will be back in Glasgow tonight. We will assess him on his return, he will be back for sure come the weekend.”

Buzzing

Rangers fans will surely be left buzzing by this news as Aribo is a crucial player for the club and having him back in the squad will be a major boost for van Bronckhorst heading into the next few matches.

He has proven his quality at Premiership level over the past 18 months and has been in terrific form this season. James Tavernier, Borna Barisic and Alfredo Morelos are the only outfield players who have averaged a higher SofaScore rating than him this term, highlighting his importance to the side as he has been one of the top performers in the squad.

Aribo has averaged a score of 7.20 across 20 matches as he has been able to maintain an excellent run of form. The midfielder has provided six goals and three assists, whilst creating 1.9 chances per game, which shows that he has the end product to match his consistent overall performances and that is why fans will be buzzing to see him back at the club.

Earlier this season, van Bronckhorst lauded the 25-year-old after an impressive showing against Dundee United, saying:

“Joe is an important player who has played here for many years and you could see what he brings to the team.

“He scored a goal but his overall performance, defensively and offensively was very good. He’s a very dynamic player and I’m happy with his performance.”

This shows how highly the Dutchman rates Aribo and why it will be a major boost for him to have the maestro back in the squad for the clash with Ross County.

Hopefully, he has returned from international duty without any knocks and will be able to slot straight back into the team so he can continue to deliver brilliant displays in the Premiership for the Gers.

Rice attracts media praise vs Man United

Reacting to the performance of star midfielder Declan Rice, various figures in the media have been left blown away by West Ham United’s ‘only shining light’ against Manchester United.

The Lowdown: Rice continues to shine…

The England international, following on from his performances for the Hammers last campaign and at the Euros, has been a revelation yet again so far this campaign under manager David Moyes.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to WhoScored, the 23-year-old tops West Ham’s charts in terms of tackles and interceptions averaged per 90 – highlighting his real defensive prowess in midfield over 2021/2022.

It’s little wonder many big clubs, including today’s opponents Man United, are apparently interested as figures in the media shower praise on his performance today.

The Latest: Media rave…

Taking to Twitter, Media members were left astonished by Rice’s performance – with journalist Tyrone Marshall of The Manchester Evening News calling him ‘excellent’.

Meanwhile, MUTV and BBC analyst Statman Dave pointed out the player’s impressive first half numbers and lauded West Ham’s ‘main main’ of the afternoon.

Last but not least, YouTube celebrity and United supporter Ryan Haber, who has over 254,000 subscribers on the platform, was in particular awe – branding Rice ‘absolutely fantastic’ and ‘West Ham’s only shining light’.

The Verdict: Keep him at all costs…

Amassing the highest match rating of any West Ham man according to SofaScore, this display is yet more evidence that the Irons and GSB should not sell at any cost as he recorded a frankly ridiculous 97% pass accuracy.

The club are allegedly attempting to tie him down with fresh terms to secure his future, but this outing at Old Trafford will only attract more attention from suitors.

Based off this praise and performances this campaign, West Ham may face a battle to keep him in future seasons. but they simply must if Moyes is to maintain his side’s stay at the highest level.

Sunderland fans slam Gooch vs Accrington

Many Sunderland fans were critical of the performance of Lynden Gooch in their 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley in League One on Saturday afternoon.

It was a frustrating game for the Wearsiders, who had to settle for a point in the end despite taking the lead through Aiden O’Brien and the hosts having Ross Sykes sent off for a second yellow card.

Gooch would not have been too pleased with his own individual performance, as he lost out on three of his four duels while also failing to record a single successful dribble, along with giving the ball away 19 times (SofaScore).

He was also the only Black Cats player to have played the full 90 minutes and record fewer touches than goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, highlighting his lack of impact on the match.

These Sunderland supporters slammed the American’s display on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that he is a ‘liability’:

Leeds: Adam Forshaw out for the season with knee injury

Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw will miss Monday’s meeting with Crystal Palace and the five games that will follow due to a fresh knee problem.

The Lowdown: Forshaw’s season

Forshaw, who missed a whopping 71 games with a hip problem, made a long-awaited return to action last August against Crewe Alexandra.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Englishman has gone on to make 26 appearances in all competitions, 22 of which have come in the Premier League.

He missed his first game under new manager Jesse Marsch against Watford earlier this month, and he won’t be featuring again as the Whites look to avoid relegation.

The Latest: Six-week absence

Football Insider were the first to break the news regarding Forshaw after being informed by a source on Friday morning.

They described it as a ‘devastating blow’, with the 30-year-old in a leg brace after suffering a knock in training.

Jesse Marsch confirmed the injury at his pre-match press conference, revealing the midfielder has a fractured knee cap and will be sidelined for six weeks.

The Verdict: Never ending…

Marsch has already suffered three big injury blows since taking over from Marcelo Bielsa in Tyler Roberts, Junior Firpo and Patrick Bamford, so this update on Forshaw is another problem he’ll have to deal with.

The good news is that Kalvin Phillips will make his first start since December, while Mateusz Klich and Robin Koch look set to battle it out for a place next to the England international at Selhurst Park.

Another midfield setback would leave Marsch extremely short of options, but fingers crossed that won’t happen with the battle to avoid the drop getting tense.

Ponting hails Johnson's 'all-time great' spell

Mitchell Johnson has spied the doubts in the eyes of the England batsmen after regaining his powers as one of the game’s most potent fast bowlers

Peter English at the WACA19-Dec-2010Mitchell Johnson has spied the doubts in the eyes of the England batsmen after regaining his powers as one of the game’s most potent fast bowlers. Johnson responded from his dropping in Adelaide with nine wickets in the third Test, including a game-turning effort on the second day which Ricky Ponting called “one of the all-time great Ashes spells”.His inswingers to the right-handers at 140kph make him a brutal weapon and he was a constant threat to England’s batsmen during the 267-run victory. “I saw a bit of doubt in their minds throughout the second innings and when that ball is swinging around it puts a lot of doubt in people’s minds,” Johnson said. “But there are still two Tests to go and I’ve got to take it one at a time, keep trying to improve as a cricketer.”Johnson spent two weeks rebuilding his action in the nets with Troy Cooley, the bowling coach, before the contest and Ponting was hugely satisfied with the results. England were 0 for 78 in the first innings before crashing to 187 after Johnson’s stunning burst of 4 for 7 in the opening session of the second day.”The ball was swinging and Mitch’s spell was probably one of the all-time great Ashes spells,” Ponting said. “Him coming into the game under a bit of pressure as well, it was an amazing achievement and set up this victory and the series for us.”The spell has transformed him and transformed how they think about him in the English dressing room. Some of the deliveries he bowled will have them seriously thinking about how they play him. I heard rumours coming into the game that they had Mitch’s type of bowling worked out – I am not sure they think that now. You don’t end up with the record he has by fluke, you have to have a lot of skill and commitment.”After taking 6 for 38 in the first innings, Johnson backed up with 3 for 44 in the second as he and Ryan Harris knocked England over for 123. Harris matched his team-mate’s haul of nine wickets, finishing with a career-best 6 for 47.Harris’ collection included four of the five victims on the final morning, with the crucial breakthroughs being the lbw of Ian Bell and the edge of Matt Prior. He has played only four Tests but already has 20 wickets and has quickly become a key member of the developing attack.”He’s not put a foot wrong and is at home in the international game,” Ponting said. “It was great to see him get that reward. He has toiled away all week and to see him contribute the way he has is great for him and the team.”Harris’ only worry is the state of his right knee, which was operated on a couple of times during the off-season. The pain will stay with him for the rest of his career, but it is not going to stop him from taking part in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.”He’s just taken six-for in a Test match so he’s fine,” Ponting said. “He’s got a couple of extra days off now so that will help.”

Everton must appoint Nuno to replace Rafa

Everton have officially sacked Rafa Benitez, becoming the fifth manager to be shown the door since Farhad Moshiri became the majority shareholder at the club in 2016, and there are already a number of managers being named as potential suitors for the position.

Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Roberto Martinez have all been identified as rumoured targets as Benitez’s successor at the club, after Sky Sports journalist, Ben Ransom, named the trio live at Finch Farm on Sunday afternoon.

However, there is a manager that was closely linked with the Everton job before they appointed the Spaniard in the summer.

Nuno Espirito Santo is currently out of work, after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur following a poor start to the season, and was replaced with Italian manager, Antonio Conte, but could become the perfect appointment for Everton in their current situation where they find themselves 16th in the Premier League this season.

The Portuguese coach earned his credibility and respect in the top-flight during his tenure at Wolverhampton Wanderers taking them from midtable in the Championship to a Europa League quarter-final and an FA Cup semi-final, establishing themselves as a Premier League club finishing as high as seventh in two consecutive seasons in the league under his guidance.

His 47.7% win ratio at Molineux surpasses the 47.1% Wolves completed as they won three league titles in the 1950s under Stanley Cullis, earning him high praise from respected figures in English football, with Gary Lineker hailing the manager “fabulous” upon his mutual departure from the Midlands club.

Lineker told viewers of Match of the Day after Wolves were defeated in Nuno’s last game in charge:

“Ultimately, a disappointing farewell for Nuno but he’s done a fabulous job there over the years and turned them into a real, proper Premier League club.”

Moshiri could hire Nuno and utilise his proven experience in building a club up from mediocrity to challenging in Europe and domestic competitions, finally giving Everton fans something to smile about after a nightmare season so far, with an ongoing lack of success, going further back then Moshiri’s Everton journey, which has seen the club without a trophy for almost 27 years.

Everton have confirmed in a statement that they will announce the new manager at Goodison Park in due course, with currently no word of any official approach being made for any prospective appointment so far.

That said, we think it should be the former Wolves and Tottenham boss who is handed the keys to Goodison Park.

Wins for USA and Cayman Islands

USA and Cayman Islands notched up victories on the opening day of the ICC World Cricket League Americas Division One Twenty20

Cricinfo staff05-Jun-2010USA prevailed over Argentina in a close encounter at the Sea Breeze Oval in Hamilton, winning by two wickets in a big chase. Struggling at 105 for 7, USA were boosted by a 67-run eighth-wicket stand between Timroy Allen (32) and Orlando Baker (28*). The pair gave their team a realistic chance of winning after a bulk of the line-up had faltered in its chase of 184. Allen struck two sixes in his 21-ball knock while Baker stayed through to the end to seal victory with 11 balls to spare. Argentina didn’t help their cause by conceding 25 extras, 17 in wides. The star for Argentina with the bat was Grant Dugmore who smashed 68 in 35 balls, including six fours and five sixes. He was supported by Tomas Francis (35) and Donald Forrester (32) as Argentina finished with a challenging score. But USA’s lower order stepped up to overhaul it.Cayman Islands eased to an eight-wicket win over Bahamas at the National Stadium in Hamilton. Ryan Bovell struck an unbeaten 50 to chase down a paltry target of 102 and was supported by opener Ramon Sealy in that effort. Only three Bahamas batsmen reached double-figures with each failing to push on. Ryan Tappin made a slow 23 while Marc Taylor chipped in with 20. Bowlers Marlon Bryan and Alessandro Morris bagged two wickets each to restrict the opposition to a woefully inadequate total.

Mangalore crush Brigadiers by 54 runs

Round-up of the tenth day’s action in the Karnataka Premier League

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Sep-2010A brilliant bowling performance helped Mangalore United to crush Bangalore Brigadiers (Urban) by 54 runs, as Brigadiers were dismissed for 81 while chasing the target of 136 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Mangalore bowlers were all over Brigadiers, reducing them to 33 for 6 after ten overs. Wicketkeeper Sadiq Kirmani – whose father and former India keeper Syed Kirmani was the match referee – resisted briefly, but was last man out as Brigadiers were bowled out in the 15th over. Offspinner Udit Patel took 4 for 31.Opener Bharat Chipli’s 57 off 51 deliveries had earlier given his side a strong platform for a big total. But offspinner M Vinod picked up three wickets, including that of Chipli, to restrict Mangalore to 135 for 6.Mysore Maharaajas beat Belagavi Panthers by six wickets, chasing down the target of 123 with an over to spare in Bangalore.Three Mysore bowlers picked up two wickets each to restrict Belagavi to 122 for 9. This was after the openers had given Belagavi a solid start, adding 40 in five overs. Mysore replied with a patient opening partnership of 51 between KB Pawan and Sudhir Rao, and despite the fall of wickets later in the innings, it was enough to set up a comfortable victory.

Wolves had a mare over Guimaraes transfer

As per Tim Spiers’ latest report for The Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers had an opportunity to move for former Lyon and now Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

24-year-old Guimaraes had attracted the attention of Europe’s finest outfits after another impressive campaign with Lyon in Ligue 1.

The notable sides who were interested in signing the Lyon star were Arsenal and Newcastle, with the latter signing him for £33.3m plus £6.5m in add-ons.

Spiers states in his report that Wolves “courted” the Brazilian star, before he completed his move to St James’ Park.

“The Best”

Newcastle United’s signing of the 24-year-old has turned out to be nothing short of astute, nor mesmeric.

Despite arriving as one of the most prominent central defensive midfielders around, Howe has been blown away by his technical ability and wants the Brazilian on the ball as much as possible.

As such, he has primarily functioned as a central midfielder for Newcastle United this season – a position that Wolves desperately need with the reported potential outgoings of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker.

Bruno Lage will surely regret not moving for the No.39 wearing midfielder after he watched him run the show when the two sides met in Wolves’ 1-0 defeat to Howe’s side in early April, completing 86% of his passes, 100% of his dribbles and winning a whopping 12 duels.

Guimaraes, who has been described as “the best” by journalist Charlie Bennett and as “out of this world” by Tom Barclay, has discovered his goalscoring touch in England, having scored three times in his last four Premier League games for the Magpies.

Almost all of Guimaraes’ metrics are in and around the 90th percentile on FBref, with his match average of 6.26 progressive passes, and 3.23 shot-creating actions per 90 a stand out compared to the likes of Dendoncker who registers an average of 1.99 progressive passes per 90, with a match average of 1.50 shot-creating actions.

Howe is right in letting him flourish as a central midfielder, as his attributes are so outstanding that it would be a waste to restrict him to defensive duties. On the other hand, Lage and Wolves were wrong in not actioning this deal if, as reported, they had the option to sign him.

The latest report from Spiers will come as a dagger in the hearts of a passionate fanbase who would have adored the Brazilian sensation.

Wolves have had a nightmare with this deal.
