Ngam to make his welcomed return against Australia A

Mfuneko Ngam will make his much awaited return to top class cricket when he turns out for South Africa A against Australia A in a seven match one-day series starting in a day/night match at Potchefstroom on Wednesday 4 September.Ngam who has been plagued by injuries over the past two seasons has been working out in the gymnasium and with Kepler Wessels to get him back to full fitness. Bowling with a lot of pace and variation at the South African training camp earlier this month he showed that he was well on his way to a full recovery. At that stage and according to himself he was close to 98 percent fit and raring to go. All eyes will be on his form and fitness.Neil McKenzie, Gary Kirsten and Steve Elworthy have also been given the chance to prove themselves on home grounds before the series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and ultimately the World Cup gets under way. All three were left out of the national squad for the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.Daryll Cullinan, after his actions and misunderstandings last season, seems to have been left out in the cold and one wonders if his international career has come to an end.Together with the experience, youth has been included in the squad to meet a very powerful Australian outfit. Jacques Rudolph and Martin van Jaarsveld after a successful overseas campaign are joined by Loots Bosman, Robin Peterson, Thami Tsolikilie and Ashwell Prince. The remainder of the team, which can truly be called a South African A team is made up of Andrew Hall, Mornatau Hayward, Justin kemp, Andre Nel, Errol Stewart and David Terbrugge. All these players have the ability to reach their goals of playing in the World Cup. It is now all up to them to impress. The full South African A squad for the first three one-day matches is:Neil McKenzie (capt) Northerns

Ben Smith appointed new Worcestershire captain

Ben Smith, Worcestershire’s 30 year-old right-handed batsman, has been appointed as the county’s captain in succession to Graeme Hick. Hick was relieved of the post after three seasons in charge in somewhat controversial circumstances in that he expressed profound disappointment at the decision.Smith had been vice-captain of Leicestershire in 2001 but left at the end of that season to join Worcestershire. He enjoyed a successful first season with his new county and led the side in the final Norwich Union League match of the season – against Leicestershire – when Hick was absent with a broken thumb.Having been a part of Leicestershire championship-winning teams in 1996 and 1998, he knows what it takes to reach the pinnacle of the county game and wants to emulate those performances now he is in a position to lead Worcestershire. On his appointment he said: "I am thrilled to have been given the honour of leading the county during what promises to be a very exciting period. I have settled into the club extremely well both on and off the pitch and am looking forward to building on the progress we made as a side last season."I know Graeme was disappointed not to continue in the job but I have spoken to him and he has assured me I have his full support and I have no doubt he will continue to be a huge asset to the side as he has been throughout his career with the club."Director of cricket at New Road, Tom Moody, commented on Smith’s appointment by saying, "I am confident Ben will take us to new heights and lead us with great success. The club feels that the time is right to move forward with the captaincy of the team and Ben has all the attributes as a leader to take us to the next level."Smith’s first task will be to lead Worcestershire out of the second division of the championship. It is thought that failure to achieve that last season was influential in the decision to change the captaincy.

The Big Picture

Australia lead the five-match series 2-0 and West Indies’ efforts in both matches have been distinctly underwhelming. In St Vincent they conceded a big total before stumbling so badly early in their chase that for the rest of the innings they were playing catch-up, and not very well. In Grenada they could not capitalise on a strong start from their bowlers, allowing Australia to post a challenging score and then collapsing miserably in the chase. Their tempo was all wrong on a slow pitch that required patience and with the third match to be held at the same venue, West Indies must quickly adapt to the tough conditions if they want to avoid an irreparable 3-0 deficit.

Team news

Not many players were able to hold their head up high after Friday’s drubbing. There is a chance that West Indies will be boosted by the return of Ramnaresh Sarwan, who has been nursing a groin injury, and if he plays it will likely be Kieron Pollard to miss out after an awful shot selection brought his downfall second ball on Friday. Patrick Browne’s inclusion was a failure on both fronts as he laboured over 1 with the bat and struggled behind the stumps, so Denesh Ramdin might take back the gloves. John Dyson hinted Shivnarine Chanderpaul could open though he added the batsman was set about what position he was comfortable playing at.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Xavier Marshall, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Andre Fletcher, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Jerome Taylor, 10 Sulieman Benn, 11 Daren Powell.Unless Andrew Symonds recovers from his back injury there is no real reason for Australia to alter their successful line-up. Ponting said the win in Grenada was even more pleasing than their first-up St Vincent victory and he will presumably be keen to wrap up the series before tinkering too much with the team.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Shaun Marsh, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 James Hopes, 8 Luke Ronchi (wk), 9 Brett Lee, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Nathan Bracken.

Watch out for …

Jerome Taylor If the Grenada pitch seams like it did on Friday, Taylor could once again be a handful for Australia’s top order. He picked up two early wickets, including Ricky Ponting for the fifth time in his past six international innings, and without Fidel Edwards he is clearly the most dangerous man in West Indies’ attack.Luke Ronchi Handed his one-day international debut on Friday because of Brad Haddin’s broken finger, Ronchi knows he has three more matches to show his talents as Haddin has now flown home to aid his recovery. In Australia’s deep batting line-up, Ronchi will probably come in at No. 8, although he is a highly skilled striker and the owner of the fastest one-day century in Australia’s domestic one-day history. He also struck a 51-ball first-class hundred last season, smiting his second fifty in 11 balls.

Weather

Showers are forecast in the afternoon, which could mean another Duckworth/Lewis result after nine overs were lost on Friday.

Stats and trivia

Should Brett Lee collect at least one victim he will become the fastest man to reach 300 ODI wickets. Lee will be playing his 171st one-day international and the current quickest to the milestone was Waqar Younis, who got there in his 186th game.Australia have had four men score half-centuries in the first two matches of the series; West Indies have had none.

Quotes

“You’ve seen at times through the series the sort of cricket we can play. It’s just a shame that we are not consistently playing that type of cricket.”
“We’re going to have to work our backsides off on Sunday to try and get a similar result [to Friday] but I think if we continue to bowl and field like that we’ll be in great stead for the rest of the series.”
Michael Clarke, Australia’s vice-captain

SPCL 1 – All over bar the shouting for Burridge

It’s all over bar the shouting for Burridge, who are all but mathematically relegated from the ECB Southern Electric Premier League top flight after a seven-wicket defeat by Liphook & Ripsley at Ripsley Park. With Calmore beating Bournemouth, Burridge lie firmly anchored to the Premier Division 1 basement with almost no hope of survival. They relied heavily on Dave Jackson’s gallant 77 after slipping to 40-3.Moeen Cheema (20) and Oxford University bound Ed Brogan (23 not out) tried their best later, but a three-wicket spell by Nick Gay (3-24), aided by two-wicket stints by Alan Crawford and Alistair Gray, left Burridge 177 all out.South African Alistair Gray led Liphook to Premier safety with an undefeated 108.The outcome was a major disappointment for teenager Brogan, who had been celebrating an autumn placement at Oxford after achieving top marks in his A-level examinations at King Edward VI.Calmore Sports assured themselves of retaining Premier 1 status by beating Bournemouth by 21 runs at Loperwood Park.Burridge are almost certain to be relegated after a seven-wicket defeat at Liphook & Ripsley.Although Dan Jackson took 5-52, it was Calmore’s top order that dominated proceedings, with Greg Lewis (93) getting useful back-up from Jez Goode (38) and James Hibberd (35) as the Totton club posted 217-8.Any chance Bournemouth had of winning effectively disappeared when none of the top order made an impact.Half the Bournemouth side was back in the pavilion at 92-5, after which Julian Cassell (40), Andy Bell (46 not out) and Kristian Wilson (28) took the final total to 196-7.Andover, meanwhile, stayed ahead in the 50-over pennant with a 25-run victory over Portsmouth at London Road.Ian Gardner (28), Roger Miller (27) and Ian Langdown (20) eased Andover’s early problems, but a total of 151 was always too many for Portsmouth. The visitors remained a threat through Lee Savident (35) and Michael Barnes (26), but once the pair were parted, Richard Taylor, Matt Hopper and Gareth Tate broke through to leave the visitors 126 all out.

Nisar heroics dash ADBP's hopes

A splendid all-round performance by Pakistan Customs’ Nisar Abbas thwarted ADBP’s aspirations of reaching the semifinals of the one-day cricket championship at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad Saturday.Nisar scored 86 off 101 balls as Customs ran up an impressive total of 294 for seven in 50 overs. Then with his slow left-armers, Nisar captured six for 42 in nine overs to restrict ADBP to 245 all out.ADBP ended with four points as did Wapda and Customs but finished third in the final round standings of Group-II on net run-rate.Customs captain Aamir Bashir hammered 102 off 110 deliveries after losing the toss. His knock was laced with six fours and one. The fourth-wicket partnership between Aamir and Nisar, who hit eight fours and one six, produced 111 runs. Asim Kamal remained on 44 not out off as many balls with three hits to the fence.Openers Inam-ul-Haq (80 off 99 balls, six fours) and Imran Abbas (52 off 60 balls, seven fours) gave ADBP a perfect start by putting on 108 in 20 overs. But the remaining batsmen found the runs hard to come by, especially against Nisar, who was the obvious choice as the Man-of-the-Match.

Pakistan name team for Australia

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Thursday announced a predictable 14-member squad for the Super Challenge series in Australia next month. With Abdul Razzaq and Saqlain Mushtaq unavailable because of county commitments with Middlesex and Surrey respectively in England, the selectors wisely decided to stick with an experienced team for the three One-day Internationals against world champions Australia. The squad is: Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar, Imran Nazir, Shahid Afridi, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Rashid Latif, Azhar Mahmood, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Sami and Misbah-ul-Haq.Azhar Mahmood was recalled to replace fellow all-rounder Razzaq after a short but successful stint with Surrey.Saeed Anwar retains his place in the squad. He was slated to play against New Zealand in the second Test here earlier this month but the suicide bomb blast vanquished his comeback prospects. The 33-year-old former skipper was sidelined by a stress fracture in his wrist after his last international appearance during the Sharjah Cup in November. He missed the subsequent series against Bangladesh, West Indies and New Zealand as well as last month’s Sharjah Cup.The Pakistan squad will undergo a short training camp at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore from Wednesday before the team leaves for Australia on June 5.Australia have already named a 13-man squad led by Ricky Ponting. The first two matches will be played indoors at Colonial Stadium in Melbourne on June 12 and 15 respectively. The final game is scheduled for June 19 at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Australia 'A' completely overshadow South Africa 'A'

Australia `A’ completely overshadowed South African `A’ at Centurion today, winning by the biggest margin so far in the series, seven wickets, and ten overs to spare.Winning the toss and batting in what appeared to be a perfect morning to bowl on, the South Africans were once again let down by a top order that has just not switched on this series. Some lusty blows at the end of the innings restored some face but the locals still got bowled out inside the 50 overs for 193 with Ashwell Prince scoring 44 and Andrew Hall getting 38. Steve Elworthy waded in with a 27 and the next highest was extras with 25.The Australians only lost three wickets in their chase with Ryan Campbell once again going cheaply and Simon Katich getting nine. Justin Langer with 61 was the only other Australian to lose his wicket. Greg Blewett, unbeaten on 84, and Michael Clarke, not out 22, seeing the team home with 10.2 overs to spare.Robin Peterson was the choice of the South African bowlers with Elworthy giving ample support. This however is not the department that the South Africans are lacking in. Somewhere the selectors are going to have to come up with a solution to the failing top order.Mfuneko Ngam bowled with some pace and could feel slightly unlucky giving away three fours from inside edges that could just as easily have gone into the stumps. He did however leave the field after taking a bad fall on his knee running a ball down on the boundary. The South African selectors have left Gary Kirsten out of the squad for the next two matchesThe next match is at the Wanderers on Wednesday morning.

Alleyne defies pain to play captain's innings

Skipper Mark Alleyne was Gloucestershire’s wounded hero as they maintained a100 per cent Benson & Hedges Cup group record with a five-wicket win overGlamorgan at Bristol.Alleyne hit a match-winning 79 not out, despite a painful hand injurysustained while fielding, to guide his side past the visitors’ total of236-6 with nine balls to spare. He had earlier taken 2-36 from ten overs after winning the toss and theall-round contribution was enough to pip the unlucky Jimmy Maher to the GoldAward.Glamorgan’s new Australian opener hit a magnificent 142 not out to set thehome side a challenging target. There were 12 sumptuous foursand a straight six off Mike Cawdron in his highest ever limited overs score, made off 151 balls. The outcome might have been different had Steve James not been forced toretire hurt on 30 after edging a ball from Jon Lewis into his left knee.Glamorgan were 85-1 in the 20th over and going well. They soon plunged to 127-5 before Robert Croft and Darren Thomas providedsome belated support to Maher.Gloucestershire looked in trouble at 66-4 in reply, despite a dashing 24 off16 balls from new father Ian Harvey, celebrating the birth of daughterCharlotte the previous afternoon. But Matt Windows (40) helped Alleyne add 77 for the fifth wicket beforeJeremy Snape became an even more effective partner.Alleyne and Snape cleverly found gaps in the field and compiled theirunbroken stand of 97 with few risks, although Alleyne was crucially droppedon 28 by substitute fielder Dean Cosker at cover off Adam Davies.Snape’s unbeaten 46 came off just 44 balls, with six fours, while Alleyne’sinnings occupied 89 deliveries and featured eight boundaries.

Smith and Bollinger help NSW win season opener

ScorecardSteven Smith was left unbeaten on 99•Getty Images

Steven Smith and Doug Bollinger helped New South Wales claim the first victory of the Australian domestic season, a 27-run win over Western Australia at the WACA. Smith made an unbeaten 99 to set up a strong total of 5 for 281 before Bollinger collected 4 for 67 from 13 overs to ensure the Warriors did not chase down the target, despite the best efforts of Mitchell Marsh with 78.In what was the earliest start to an Australian domestic season, the Warriors won the toss and sent the Blues in, and the debutant opener Scott Henry provided a steady hand with 66 from 105 balls. Mitchell Johnson, playing his first domestic one-day game for Western Australia, claimed two wickets, including that of the national captain Michael Clarke caught at slip for 1, but Smith and Moises Henriques proved the keys.Smith must have been close to being part of Australia’s squad in Sri Lanka for the World Twenty20, but instead found himself in Perth trying to prove his value to the national selectors once again. He blasted 11 fours and one six in his innings and was left one short of his maiden one-day century, while Henriques was even brisker in his scoring. He made 78 from 45 balls including five sixes, and the Blues took 50 runs off Johnson’s final four overs. Nathan Coulter-Nile also struggled to contain Henriques and Smith in the dying stages, conceding three sixes in his final over to finish with 2 for 69 from 12 overs. In reply, Western Australia needed a strong start but lost Liam Davis and Adam Voges to Bollinger in the early stages.Shaun Marsh (37) and the debutant Sam Whiteman (31) provided something for the Warriors to build on but too much was left for the end, and despite Mitchell Marsh’s 78 from 65 deliveries, the target was too tall for the Warriors. Bollinger collected another two wickets later in the innings and Western Australia were dismissed for 254 in the 50th over.

Ishant, Mishra help North to huge first-innings lead

ScorecardIshant Sharma destroyed West Zone’s top order•K Sivaraman

North Zone strengthened their grip on the Duleep Trophy quarter-final in Chennai with a combined bowling performance that bowled West Zone out for 164 and secured a 320-run lead. Ishant Sharma destroyed the top order and legspinner Amit Mishra ran through the tail, taking seven wickets between them. The North Zone openers batted for 14 overs to add 30 runs before stumps, with a day remaining.Six for 1 overnight, West Zone’s slump began in the second over of the day, when opener Kaustubh Pawar fell without a run being scored. The new batsmen tried to build partnerships but were slow. When in-form Cheteshwar Pujara got out to Ishant in the 22nd over, West Zone were struggling at 40 for 4. Bhushan Chauhan and wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel batted together for 24.2 overs, scoring 72 runs – the highest stand of the innings. Chauhan was dismissed by Ishant, who had accounted for four top-order wickets. Patel reached a fifty but departed soon after, and West Zone were 128 for 6. The last four wickets added only 36 more.Besides Sharma and Mishra, seamer Rishi Dhawan also helped North Zone with important wickets of No. 3 batsman Murtuja Vahora and Patel. To force a result on the last day, North Zone will want to declare early and bowl West Zone out quickly again.
